MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's parliament backed a draft law on Friday banning "homosexual propaganda", in what critics see as an attempt to shore up support for President Vladimir Putin in the country's largely conservative society.

Only one deputy in the State Duma lower house voted against the bill, but passions spilled over outside the chamber, where 20 people were detained after scuffles between Russian Orthodox Christians and gay activists who staged a "kiss-in" protest.

"We live in Russia, not Sodom and Gomorrah," United Russia deputy Dmitry Sablin said before the 388-1 vote in the 450-seat chamber. "Russia is a thousands-years-old country founded on its own traditional values - the protection of which is dearer to me than even oil and gas."

Good for Putin and conservative Russians. Not taking any crap off the sodomites. Wouldn't it be great if the same thing happened here. There might be some hope for us afterall. Can you imagine Boehner saying "we live in the United States, not Sodom and Gomorrah"!

Russians always were an intelligent people. They will not bow to pressure from deviants who seek to return to the primitive ways of homosexualism.

Good gosh. Who would have ever guessed I’d end up being more like Russians than Americans in my later life?!

We won the cold war, but they will win the culture war. I think I’ll order a set of language-learning tapes in Russian, just to be safe.

I’ve developed a serious dislike for about 52% of Americans, including most of Hollywood, and all of the media. I’m not joking when I say I’d seriously consider researching life in Russia.

I would love to have his excellency call out Putin on this, in person. After Vlady knocked him on his ass, discussion would be over. Of course, Vlady would have to go for shots after that one just in case.

Whoever thought I would agree with the Ruskies before my own country on any issue much less this one.

You might find more economic freedom in some place like Colombia.

What a shame when former Communist Russia has more moral authority than is found in this country.

I know, I hear they have essentially free markets there now, too.

Good on them.

I bet they don’t call pederasts using a synonym for the word “cheerful”.

Russia sure seems to comprehend the intrinsic dangers of allowing the culture to rot to hell. Never would have predicted this, but it looks more and more like Russia will manage to survive, while America continues its rapid downward spiral towards degeneracy and destruction.

From what little I know, crime is a big issue in both places. It just seems they dislike Americans a little more in Columbia.

Forget Russia, go to Poland! They have the same views and they’re a very out of the way country. I think they’re just about the most down to earth people on this planet. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to move to Poland.

Apparently the Russians are bright enough to see America as an example of what NOT to do.

The Poles have been friends to America before America’s cultural collapse. That’s a big plus. And their president was a big detractor of Algore. I remember him asking to debate his Goreness. Another huge plus. Weather no unlike where I am... I wonder what the cost of living is like? Hmmmmm...
