Washington (CNN) -- The Pentagon has begun laying off 46,000 contract and temporary civilian employees in an effort to cut back on military spending, the No. 2 Pentagon official said on Friday. Full time civilian employees, which number in the hundreds of thousands, also will be furloughed for one day a week for 22 weeks, Deputy Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in an interview with wire service reporters. His comments were confirmed by a Pentagon spokesman.

Why do I imagine that these are the only layoffs that really make leftist happy?

The US Ambassador was just murdered by al Qaeda on 9/11. What a coincidence. NOT.

November 6, 2012, Richmond Times Dispatch:

"With a few precincts still outstanding, Obama led the 2012 count in Fairfax by about 85,250 votes, in Prince William by about 17,400 votes and in Loudoun by 7,100 votes."

These people who are being laid off are getting exactly what they (and their neighbors) voted for. Twice. I am not a leftist, and I am not happy, but I do enjoy the rich irony inherent in this announcement. I hope someone takes out a newspaper ad and points this out to them.

I see your point. Hopefully, most of these 46,000 were Obama voters.

Ok, the Pentagon has now suffered. Why can’t the freeloader butter-segment suffer any?

Why can’t cut welfare back 10% NOT A MENTION of EVER making these folks suffer one iota.

Why do I feel that THIS will be the only cut we ever see? And they will continue to target it.

Everything else stays, including our overpaid congressionals ...

I would love to hear that the entire EPA was laid off.

I am in favor of dropping the EBT cards and just sending survival food to homes that need it. If someone has a food allergy (the only argument against this plan that I have heard), then let them check a box that they have a food allergy and they will get a substitute.

Yeah, I am a hard arse, but this plan is better than our government collapsing and these moochers not getting anything.

They had to hold off until “O” was re-elected.....it’s gonna blow a hole in the Unemployment numbers.

Notice no government Employees.....were laid off. That’s the BIG problem in DC, too many self serving Public servants on the payroll shuffling paper.

Department of Education....close that affirmative action hiring haven and save on 5,000 salaries. Close EPA and that saves 14,000 bloated salaries

Prior to food stamps people reported to welfare offices and picked up commodity packages of flour, sugar, cheese, beans, rice peanut butter etc. We should return to that. If you are too stupid to cook beans and rice then you starve.

I saw those bulk commodities when I was young but already they were being phased out for food stamps. EBT cards are even more abused

Probably not ~ Department of Defense employees and contractors are located all over the country ~ Congress makes sure of that. All they have in the DC area are parts of the intelligence apparatus and the main headquarters operation (called the Pentagon).

Your friends and neighbors are taking the layoffs ~

having the gub'mnt make up the survival paks will cost many times more than just using the ordinary services of the grocery stores. They are much cheaper than gub'mnt!

Then, think of the UPS parcel costs ~ WOW!

I think the current system that has the welfare folks go to the store to pick up their own stuff is probably as cheap as it can get.

If they need food they should have to go to a central place to pick up “survival food”as you called it. REAL FOOD not prepared. If they complain that they don’t know what to do or how to prepare it tell them there’s a cookbook included for them. I HATE standing behind them in the grocery store seeing what they buy.
