Phil Mickelson isn’t the only future former Californian
The Daily Caller ^ | January 23, 2013 | Fmr. California State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore

Posted on 01/26/2013 8:36:49 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

California voters approved a $50 billion tax hike in November, bestowing the highest marginal income tax rate in the nation on California taxpayers — 13.3 percent.

Now professional golfer Phil Mickelson is thinking of leaving the state. He’s fortunate. He can practice his chosen profession in any region where snow doesn’t cover the ground for too long, and if he moves to Texas or Florida, his state income tax will drop to zero.

Mickelson won’t be the first pro golfer to leave California. Tiger Woods, who used to live in my old Orange County legislative district, moved to Florida in 1996.

California’s ruling Democrats will, of course, scoff at Mickelson. Vice President Joe Biden might even intimate that Michelson is unpatriotic for not wanting to pay a higher tax rate.

And the members of California’s ruling class will comfort themselves by saying they still have Hollywood and Silicon Valley, and they seem willing to pay the price to live in paradise. (Never mind that Hollywood has sought, and won, tax subsidies in exchange for keeping business in the Golden State.)

But what about the average Californians hit by the recent sales tax, income tax and vehicle tax boosts? How are they faring?

California’s official unemployment rate, 9.8 percent, is the third highest in the nation. In comparison, Texas’ official rate stands at 6.1 percent. For 72 consecutive months, the Lone Star State’s unemployment rate has been below the national average.

California Gov. Jerry Brown gets understandably defensive about California’s jobs picture. In a recent radio interview, Brown sought to downplay Texas’ employment success by claiming that “ten or eleven” percent of all Texas workers earn at or below the minimum wage. This stale meme, first offered by New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, is false...

Well, people vote with their feet, if it’s in their best interests to do so. This sort of thing should not be a surprise.

Many people have put up with high taxes and a high cost of living to be in California, but that clearly is changing.

Unfortunately, those who tend to move out are the most productive members of society.

We fled my home state 7 years ago, and we thought it was bad then.

I grew up there from 1960-74. Wouldn’t move back if they made me king.

Krugman seems to do a lot of that. Fabricating things and lying, I mean.

How many of those moving out have embraced policies which have created the current mess? I don’t relish the thought of those idiots endangering other states.

The taxes are the least of it It's the high cost of real estate, the high cost of living generally and above all, the lack of freedom.

I bailed in late 2011. Note:

--I now own my own home free and clear, purchased with money I was saving for a down payment on a place in the Bay Area.

--I had to move to Arizona to enjoy fishing again. In CA inland waters it's virtually all catch and release and if I'm not going to eat a fish I don't want to bother it. My niece got dinged $2500 for possession of a non-hatchery stealhead - seems the missing fin was some kind of birth defect.

--When I registered my truck I just went to a private MVD agent, paid my fees, got my plate (1), put it on my truck and left. I don't live in Phoenix or Tucson so I don't need a smog check and I didn't see any of the BS people from out of state sometimes face when registering a vehicle in CA.

--I can go to a gun show, buy a rifle or a pistol and take it home - right from the gun show, no 10 day waiting period, no $25 dollar transfer fee, no chicken pucky.

We're just freer here. I'll never move back.

Former Kalifornia Congress critter (and resident), Chuck DeVore, put together a great book The Texas Model: Prosperity in the Lonestar State and Lessons for America that is great read for those in Kalifornia (and other Kalifornia-like states) to learn from.

Good people...welcome to our home!

I truly applaud Michelson for telling the truth.

There is absolutel no reason why anyone should work for 35 cents to him on every dollar earned.

Nevada has no personal or corp income tax, but Phil cannot play golf year around, except possible near Henderson.

Las Vegas is a hell-hole of crime and Mob activity.

Carson City is very nice, but there re definately 4 seasons here.

I look for Phil to move to Texas or to Florida.

We don’t live in the age of Conestoga wagons for transportation. He can move his parents, etc, also and buy them homes with the Calif income taxes he will save.

Tina Turner is becoming an expatriot. She says it’s not because of taxes but I wonder if she doesn’t have to pay taxes in Switzerland AND the US.
