JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi defied the union during the Civil War and civil rights era, and at least two lawmakers think it is time to do so again.
Republican state Reps. Gary Chism and Jeff Smith, both of Columbus, filed a bill this month to form the Joint Legislative Committee on the Neutralization of Federal Laws.
Chism said Thursday that the tea party-backed measure is a response to President Barack Obama's federal health care overhaul and proposals to curb gun violence.
"Certainly, the Obamacare started this," Chism told The Associated Press, referring to the health care plan, "but then gun show loopholes that the president wanted after Newtown really put an exclamation on that -- that we need to do something to stand up for the Tenth Amendment."

This is the way to go......States should only send money to Washington for Defense and a few other things.....People of the state are required to send there U.S. taxes to the State...the State sends a percent to the Feds....and keeps the rest....

Some "Constitutional" law professor - he obviously doesn't understand the real meaning behind the Supremacy Claus. Federal law trumps State law when State law is in violation of the Constitution, not the other way around.
Few people understand this since they have been so dumbed down...on our history of our former republic...
The battle to rein in the federal behemoth will be won by states legislators finally using the 10 th amendment to tell DC you have gone too far...take your mandates and shove them...
The clowns in DC seen to have forgetton we are a country of 50 sovereign states...

What would really unnerve the feds at this point is if the individual states start making nullification compacts among themselves.
What this would mean is that, if one state had neutralized the federal agents attempting to enforce an unconstitutional law or regulation, and federal agents from the state with reciprocity tried to intervene or provide support to reinforce the neutralized agents, they would be in “equal violation” because of the agreement. Which could make them subject to arrest as well, though they had not broken the law in their home state.

The universities in Mississippi are oases of idiocy and stupidity in an otherwise sensible state.
Proffesor Steffey may well be one of those who teach that the Constitution is a “living document” that can mean what those in power want it to mean. He may be one who teaches we are a democracy and not a republic. He may be obama’s equal as a constitutional scholar.
What REALLY needs to happen is for the states to tell Washington that ANY law that has exemptions for Congress will be deemed unconstitutional and will not be enforced. PERIOD!
Not sure if the "Professor" isn't a carpet bagger teaching in Mississippi.

Well, I don’t like it, but undoubtedly some of the morons must be home-grown. How many had a hand in doing away with Colonel Reb, “Dixie”, the flag at football games, etc? They couldn’t all have been carpetbaggers. The self-appointed “elite” native Mississippians will break their own legs to prove to their Yankee cohorts that they’re not like the rest of us rednecks who voted to keep our flag. Filthy cowardly suck-ups.
Oh, and just judging from that guy’s picture and knowing nothing else, he sure sets off my gaydar.

Our universities are full of carpet baggers.
