Report: Explosion destroys much of underground installation in Iran
Examiner ^ | January 26, 2013 | Christopher Collins

An explosion deep within Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility has destroyed much of the installation, trapped about 240 personnel deep underground, according to a former intelligence officer of the Islamic regime, and reported by Reza Kahlili on Thursday.

The previously secret nuclear site has become a center for Iran’s nuclear activity because of the 2,700 centrifuges enriching uranium to the 20-percent level. A further enrichment to weapons grade would take only weeks, experts say.

“The level of enrichment has been a major concern to Israeli officials, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeatedly has warned about the 20-percent enriched stockpile. The explosion occurred Monday, the day before Israeli elections weakened Netanyahu’s political control,” said Kahlili.

“Iran, to avoid alarm, had converted part of the stockpile to fuel plates for use in the Tehran Research Reactor. However, days after the recent failed talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Iranian officials announced the enrichment process will not stop even “for a moment.”

"The regime’s uranium enrichment process takes place at two known sites: the Natanz facility with more than 10,000 centrifuges and Fordow with more than 2,700. The regime currently has enough low-grade (3.5 percent) uranium stockpiled for six nuclear bombs if further enriched."

“However, more time is needed for conversion of the low-grade uranium than what would be needed for a stockpile at 20 percent. It takes 225 kilograms of enriched uranium at the 20-percent level to further enrich to the 90-percent level for one nuclear bomb. However, according to a source in the security forces protecting Fordow, an explosion on Monday at 11:30 a.m. Tehran time rocked the site, which is buried deep under a mountain and immune not only to airstrikes but to most bunker-buster bombs.

I hope He’ll decide to protect the USA soon.

But then again, we may not be worth protecting in His opinion when we are trying, ever which way, to offend Him.

I read somewhere that an actual bomb requires enrichment quite a bit higher than 90% ...

Nope. You can use lower enrichment with no problem, as long as you use the right component design (gun-type or implosion) and mass of enriched uranium.

The Hiroshima "gun-type" bomb used 64 kg of uranium. 50 kg were enriched to 88%, and 14 kg were enriched to 50%. The average enrichment was just under 80%.

The critical mass for 85% enriched uranium is approximately 50 kilograms / 110 lbs. This is a sphere about 6-3/4" in diameter.

The Hiroshima bomb, as a gun-design, was not even tested prior to dropping. The design concept was deemed so reliable it was considered guaranteed to work.

Approximately 21 to 30 ounces (est.) of the core mass actually converted into energy in the explosion. The explosive force was equivalent to 32,000,000 lbs of TNT - (16 kt = 32 million pounds).

He mentioned that Stuxnet was involved.

I believe any party involved already KNOWS how this happened and the speculation on a right wing forum would have the impact of a spitball on the frontal armor of an Abrams tank. I don’t ascribe even that impact to any post I make here.

hmmmmm....let me guess:

1. The Ox cart delivering the falafels had a little extra sauce in it. Iranian syrup has a certain “kick” to it.

2. Al-Qaeda suicide bombers got their addresses mixed up.

3. Yoko Ono blames it on fracking.

4. Iron Man and Thor were in the neighborhood...what the heck, test out the new weapon systems....Thor has a wicked backhand.

5. Achmed the dead terrorist cut the wrong wire....again!!! Dang it!!! Silence....I KILL YOU!!!!

6. Reports of a middle aged man stroking a white cat have not been confirmed.

“Do the Israelis know because the explosion is the work of Mossad?”

“If that is what you think, maybe you shouldn’t broadcast it.”

“In related news, Luxembourg, the Principality of Monaco, Barbados and the Republic of Kiribati have all been ruled out as suspects.”

The "site" may be "immune" to airstrikes and bunker-busters, but the entrances and ventilation systems sure aren't.
