Possible Compromise On Immigration Reform Takes Shape By Dana Bash and Tom Cohen, CNN January 28, 2013
Washington (CNN) -- Millions of undocumented immigrants would get immediate but provisional status to live and work in America under a compromise plan proposed Monday by a bipartisan group of eight senators.
While temporarily removing legal uncertainty for the nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants, the senators' outline also called for strengthening border controls, improved monitoring of visitors and cracking down on hiring undocumented workers.
Only after those steps occurred could the undocumented immigrants already in the country begin the process of getting permanent residence -- green cards -- as a step toward citizenship, the senators told a news conference.
"They would no longer be deported, provided they don't have a criminal record. They would no longer be harassed, they would be allowed to stay here and work," said Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York in describing the immediate impact of the framework if crafted into legislation and enacted.
The outline for a possible immigration bill reflects a new willingness by mainstream Republicans to compromise following their party's defeat in November, when President Barack Obama got strong backing from Latino voters. "Elections, elections," answered Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a veteran of past immigration battles in Congress, when asked to explain the push now for a bill that proved unattainable two years ago.

Call a spade a spade - they are not "undocumented immigrants" they are CRIMINALS. What, are child pornographers just patrons of the arts? Don't be afraid to call them what they are - criminals.
...begin the process of getting permanent residence -- green cards -- as a step toward citizenship...
No, never. Anyone caught here illegally should be shipped back across the border and forfeit any chance of ever becoming a citizen. There needs to be zero incentive for continuing to violate our laws (ie. attracting even more criminals), and a very real incentive for getting the {expletive} out and coming back in legally at some later time.
Since many are in the 47% that will mean filing for back tax credits.
McCain and Rub are the heroes of Democrats and on MSNBC tonight.
(On MSNBC tonight) Voto Latino Pres Maria Teresa Kumar said she is proud of Republicans for making this change in position. Where could this go wrong?
The Title should read “Republicans Prepare Own Funeral”
with the subtitle “Democrats To Become Only Political Party”.
Picture this; A dem prez with huge majorities in both houses, SCOTUS full of minorities and homo’s.
After amnesty and chain migration, this is our future.
Good news? The nation will soon collapse.
I just found out that two of my kids’ friends are in such a case.
Their families came before 2001 and started businesses. They pay taxes, and have kids born here. they’re IN MY DAUGHTERS’ school! Great students!
They did overstay their Visas, granted... but they applied for citizenship, did all the paperwork, and are in limbo as they are used as a political football by both parties.
They had no decent life in their home country, and are very hard working people. It’s just not so simple to ‘send them back.’ They are tax payers, not welfare cheats.
How does giving liberals everything they want = compromise?
If they're undocumented, if they're so hard to locate to deport, how'd they come up with 11 million.
We were talking 10-12 million 20 years ago.
But, as syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer has pointed out, the proposed amnesty would be immediate, whereas the proposed strengthening of our border would be much later; and if the latter were never accomplished adequately (as it probably would not be), there is simply no way that the citizenship that had been bestowed upon millions of illegals might be suddenly rescinded...
Why do I have to obey the law when your friends don’t?
Oh right - cause I’m white....
“that the citizenship that had been bestowed upon millions of illegals might be suddenly rescinded...”
That’s not what this is offering, FWIW. Citizenship would still take the 5 years after the green card, even if this were to pass tomorrow. This isn’t even an offer of a green card - it’s a provisional status. Registration with the government, payment of back taxes and a fine of an unspecified amount. Plus - getting to the back of the line wrt green card applications.
There are enough things wrong with the proposed bill as is. No enforcement mechanism is the biggest.
White? Huh? They’re both ‘whiter’ than you! (what’s race got to do with it?)
The problem is that you can’t fix it by pretending you can turn back the clock. It’s a reality that is too big to attack with deportations.
Barry Hussein promised to fundamentally change our homeland.
Total destruction is indeed change.
Back when Reagan was president, he agreed to an amnesty deal that gave citizenship to 3 million illegals as long as the Democrats agreed that border security would be substantially increased.
Reagan kept his part of the deal. As we have come to expect, the Dems DIDN’T keep theirs.
We are now back in the same situation except that instead of Dems stabbing ‘Pubbies in the back, it is Juan McVain nd his merry band of RINO banditos. We know what will happen if zero, the left and the RINOS get their way. We wull become the northernmost part of Mexico. People will flood across the border in waves that will make the Mariel boat lift look like a bad day at Disney.
This plan must be stopped dead in its tracks. NO OTHER NATION on this planet rewards invaders and lawbreakers from other countries with citizenship. This is how insane America hs become.
Deja Vu...it’s 1986 all over again.
Didn’t work then, won’t work now.
With 8% official unemployment, which is pry more like 14%, how can our representatives possibly think adding 11,000,000 more people to our country is a helpful step for Americans? Especially when there are 15,000,000 of us struggling to find a job now. When things were going well, the idea may have made more sense, but with a recession, it’s pure suicide for the U.S.!
Enforcement is a fix. Surrender to massive third world population transfers is surrendering our culture, values, way of life.
Not to mention - the certain electoral extinction of conservatism. Here comes deep blue Florida, deep blue Virginia...and swing state Texas.
Not suicide. Murder.
“Illegal aliens” are Citizens of Other Countries.
What is so hard about making them return to their own countries?
Why should Americans have to have their customs changed, their language pushed aside, their money taken to educate and medicate and jail these border trespassers?
When do our politicians get around to representing our interests, instead of the interests of foreign nationals who ignore our laws? When do we count? Never?
If this abomination passes the GOP deserves a lot of the blame. Bush had a Republican House and a Republican Senate. And instead of honoring his oath of office and enforcing our laws, he spent his time trying to reward these foreign citizen lawbreakers with amnesty. And now Obama and the treason wing of the GOP are going to finish Dubya’s travesty.
Sorry, but they have to go home. They are criminals. Nice criminals probably but criminals none the less.
If this passes America is done, let alone the Republican Party.
RINOs have been the bane of the Party: Dole, McCain, Romney. RINOs have aided and abetted the death of the USA
Meanwhile, UpChuck, millions of legal Americans continue to live off of unemployment because your party won't take their foot off the throat of businesses in this country. There is plenty of fodder here for commercials that would bring this nonsense to a halt, but who is going to make them?
Is Marco Rubio trying to out-Crist Charlie Crist on immigration, but didn’t Crist switch parties?
Except that this isn’t citizenship.
Well - since deportations have never been tried, I guess we’ll never know.
While we’re at it: let’s get rid of speed limits, no obeys them anyway. Let’s legalize drugs - people do them anyway. Let’s legalize pedophilia - we’re infringing on the rights of perverts aren’t we?
So because a crook is getting away with it the law no longer means anything?
You have a funny way of looking at things....
And how do you know they’re whiter than me?
Unless they’re crayons I doubt it....
The Republican primary voters, uninformed and fearful, are just as culpable in the pending collapse as their Democrat “gimme” cousins.
Why do I have to comply with Obamacare? It’s a law NO ONE likes.
Actually, Bush pushed the amnesty thing in Spring 2007, after the Dems were back in control of the House and Senate. I guess he saw Dem control of Congress as an opportunity to get amnesty through. I remember what a tough fight that was, and how we only just barely put the kibosh on that one. And how infuriating it was to have a so-called “conservative” president, and a whole bunch of “Republicans,” supporting him on it.
“Its a reality that is too big to attack with deportations.”
No it isn’t. You do it one trespasser at a time, just like with any other law. Eisenhower did it and it worked just fine.
Once you start prosecuting foreign nationals who have been ignoring our laws the rest get the idea and don’t hang around for their turn.
Life’s a bitch when you ignore another country’s laws. Why don’t you try inviting yourself to go live in Mexico without their permission and see if they can figure out what to do with you? And whether they will feel bad about doing it.
And now we have the same fight once again. If Bush had enforced the law, like his oath required him to do, we might have to fight again but it wouldn’t be as big.
Sorry, but the fact that the illegals you know are pleasant people is no reason to support this disastrous amnesty. They made their choices, and they’ve made a lot of money in our country. Their kids born here should have never been granted automatic citizenship. It’s time for them to go home.
Amen, well-said. Keep saying it.
No need for citizenship, they get all the benefits without the responsibility, better deal in their minds, I suspect.
“Their kids born here should have never been granted automatic citizenship.”
So citizenship should be awarded to those the state approves and toes the party line?
Parent are responsible for their actions. The children are not - if they’ve been born here, they are just as much Americans as anyone else.
Oh good, unemployment must be fixed and all Americans are back to work, right? Otherwise, why on earth would they be encouraging workers from another country.
And you can't change the fact that you, and people like you, are the reason those good people are illegal. If it wasn't for apologists like you, they would have been citizens years ago, instead, good people are thrown to the side in order to let in the other 9 out of 10 who are drug dealers, child molesters, cheats, idcntity thieves and moochers. YOU are the reason good people can't become citizens.
I agree, look at your reply:
“Their kids born here should have never been granted automatic citizenship.”
There have been many mistakes made. Unprotected borders, no policy to find and deport visitors as SOON as they overstay their visas... ANARCHY.... Children born of illegals automatically granted American citizenship! (By the way, I have triple nationality, and DO know how it’s done in other countries. People are immediately found and deported. There is no ambivalence like here.... laws on the books without any serious policy to enforce.... and no, one doesn’t become an immediate citizen by the fluke of coming into the world while in the US from an overstayed visa!
But now we are here. The people I know own a house, pay property taxes and income taxes. They employ over ten workers and have children who, (according to the law, btw) can petition for their own parents to become American once they are around 24.
They can’t leave the country, can’t vote, can’t get any government assistance.... (rightly so.)
My point is that it has become impossible to deal with in a realistic manner because both parties act as if the other is a characterization of a position:
Democrats want to legalize marginal illiterates to soak up funds from our already over-burdened social service budget!
Republicans want to wrench children from the arms of their parents, confiscate legally purchased homes, and toss responsible parents over the border with no compensation!
It is an unfair, irresponsible situation, brought on by the mess that call themselves our governing class. A serious, responsible solution has to be found.
(1) to determine the scope and dimension of Voto Latino using pressure tactics on Congress (a violation of US law).
(2) Voto Latino's exchanging votes for amnesty (a violation of US law).
(3) Voto Latino's sources of funding---whether tax dollars are illegally funding legislative initiatives, and, whether foreign countries are funding their activities.
(4) whether Voto Latino is using hate-mongering against amnesty opponents to force a vote.

About your friends:
There’s a saying, “Hard cases make bad law.”
Without some assessment of how many are like your hardworking illegal friends who are trying to become citizens, versus how many are freeloading invaders, it is very difficult to make a sane policy which is in the USA’s interest.
In my opinion, the default should be towards much tighter borders, combined with a better-run legal immigration and naturalization effort. Under such a policy, there would necessarily be many deportations, as well as a shift from family/chain immigration to merit based criteria (”Ask what you can do for your country”).
Since the primary motivation of many of our legislators appears to be securing the most votes for their party, I have little hope that this new initiative will fix anything.
Yes, it is. The plan leads to amnesty and provides a path to citizenship. That's rewarding invaders and lawbreakers with citizenship instead of jail.
Exactly - that’s what you should be hammering away at - that it provides a path to citizenship.
I also don’t think it’s tenable to provide any sort of temporary legal status in America without such a path. It will eventually become one even if the path is initially blocked.
The solution is simply not to provide any status at all, unless they leave the country.
Thats not what this is offering, FWIW. Citizenship would still take the 5 years after the green card, even if this were to pass tomorrow. This isnt even an offer of a green card - its a provisional status. Registration with the government, payment of back taxes and a fine of an unspecified amount. Plus - getting to the back of the line wrt green card applications.
There are enough things wrong with the proposed bill as is. No enforcement mechanism is the biggest.
Actually, you are correct.
I should rephrase.
Krauthammer noted--correctly, I believe--that the amnesty that is being offered would not likely be rescinded.
Nor would citizenship be, if acquired later...
The problem is - it’s all tied to vague, unspecified promises of enforcement. There’s nothing there. It’s instant amnesty, for everyone who’s in America at present.
