PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 29, 2013

The Time to Forge a Just Immigration Consensus is Now

Mat Staver, Chairman of Liberty Counsel Action, responds to the bipartisan immigration reform proposal.

Washington, DC – “It is time to forge a just immigration policy that acknowledges that we are both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. Our current immigration system is broken and it needs to be fixed. We need to secure our borders. This is a matter of national security. We need to enforce our laws. We are a nation that believes in the rule of law. We need to provide opportunities for undocumented immigrants among us, who wish to pursue an earned pathway to some form of legal status, to come out of the shadows. Such a pathway would be subject to appropriate penalties, waiting periods, background checks, evidence of moral character, and a commitment to full participation in American society through an understanding of the English language.

“An earned pathway to legal status is not amnesty. I oppose amnesty. And I ask those who label an earned pathway to legal status as amnesty to stop politicizing this debate needlessly and to acknowledge the difference.

“The time to forge a rational consensus is now. America is a country of immigrants, a melting pot of individuals from various ethnicities and cultures. This country was established based on our rich heritage of immigration, and, in accordance with a just immigration policy, this country will continue to thrive. America deserves a just immigration policy that secures, not closes, our borders; enforces the laws; provides a temporary guest-worker program; and one that otherwise offers a pathway for earned legal status.

“We are compelled by our common faith and heritage to acknowledge that the history of immigration is filled with stories of triumph and tragedy. While Latinos are often the subject of today’s immigration debate, nearly every American today can trace their ancestry to one or many foreign lands. America’s astounding success can be largely attributed to the fact that we are a nation of immigrants, and we have proven to the world that people from diverse backgrounds can come to America, live in peace with their neighbors, pursue their dreams, and succeed. The overwhelming attraction of America is her freedom. As the world’s standard-bearer for freedom, America’s light shines as hope for the world. We must never quench the torch of liberty. We must always stand for the freedom that makes our shores the object of desire for people without hope. America must always stand for liberty. It is the privilege of a freedom-loving people,” Mat Staver concluded.

Liberty Counsel is the national sponsor of the Life Directive for the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC), which is comprised of 40,118 evangelical Hispanic churches. Liberty Counsel and Liberty Counsel Action are the legislative and policy arms of the NHCLC. Mat Staver serves as Chairman of Liberty Counsel Action, serves on the board of the NHCLC, and is the NHCLC's Chief Legal Counsel.

No matter what they say, "an earned pathway to legal status" IS amnesty.

We oppose any policy that rewards those who have invaded our country.

From our Platform:

"We completely oppose any action that surrenders the moral, political or economic sovereignty of the United States and its people, and demand the immediate restoration of that sovereignty wherever it has been eroded.

We demand the immediate securing and continuous vigilant maintenance of our sovereign territory and borders. We oppose any private or governmental action that rewards illegal entry into the United States in any way, and demand speedy and full enforcement of our laws concerning all such activities."

Sad...and I really respected this organization

However, you cannot really be Christian when you value the rights of criminals over the rights of honest Christian folks.

I can no longer support Liberty Counsel if they support Illegal Aliens over American citizens and legal immigrants. It is not a Christian thing to do

I agree.

Actually though, I had their number quite awhile ago, so this is not much of a surprise to me. They’re compromised.

Staver is a fool, or naive or worse a person who cares diddly about the exceptional government given by our Founders. The only thing broken about our immigration program/policy is that for too many years and by to many feely-goody situational wars and consequences the immigration controls for maintaining a viable society have been scuttled/distorted. Not all immigrants that are in the USA today, legally and illegally, have come to help build an exceptional Nation. To the contrary many have come by any and all means to to take or milk the wealth of the people who are working for the good future of the USA. It is only in the last several decades that the ‘torch of liberty’ was so broadly extended to cover all the immigration that has been foisted on persons who were willing to sweat and die to make and keep the USA exceptional. To my memory, especially since the 1960s, many of the churches in the USA have sold out their foundations to get power and influence. This has happened because like so many modern leaders of all facets of our society it has become more fashionable if not self serving to be a more important player in the National and even international feely-goody experience. Staver does not share my views and I resent his efforts to to take one penny of my well being for his feelings of charity. I stand proudly as a WWII vet who lost an only sibling brother in that war and as first generation children of immigrants.

I agree with your entire post. And I think you have one of the absolute best screen names I’ve every seen on FR.

Dear Mr. Staver:

I went to your website, Liberty Counsel certainly seems to be a very praiseworthy organization during important work. That makes your statement on immigration so shocking, as it is full of platitudes. Your statement has shown that you simply has not thought through your position.

I'll focus on just one statement: "Our current immigration system is broken and it needs to be fixed."

Please detail exactly how our immigration system is broken. What is broken?

I'd say the number one thing broken is that our political class has refused to secure the borders for over 30 years, despite promises over these decades to secure the border. They have refused to do so, despite the passage of laws requiring border security. And securing the border, which every country on the planet does, except ours, is strictly speaking not a part of the immigration issue. It's national security.

And the 11 million or is it 12 million or it was 20 million illegal invaders in our country. That's the result not of a broken immigration system, since they are not "immigrants", who have decided to become Americans. So all this talk of a "pathway to citizenship" is STUPID. Where's the evidence these illegals want to become Americans and assimilate to American values? There's no evidence.

So your acceptance of the effort "to fix our broken immigration system" turns out to be a plan to apparently force people to accept American citizenship, who don't want it. So, then we'll have 11 or 20 or 40 million (once the chain migration kicks in) unassimilated "citizens", who don't accept our values.

See what I mean? You haven't thought it through. You're blinded by your interest in the Hispanic evangelicals.
