The run on guns and ammunition
KHOU 11 News ^ | January 29, 2013 | Jeremy Desel

Posted on 01/30/2013 5:46:49 AM PST by thackney

... "This is usually full of .22 up here. .45 and .40...

"We used to sell 30,000 rounds a month of ammo and we’ve done that in a week, and sometimes even a day in ammo," James said.

What little they do have is generally high end and there is a limit on all purchases: a three-box max or 150 rounds at a time. That’s for all types and all sizes.

It’s not just one store.

Ron Casady has been shopping for weeks.

"I noticed online and everything is out of stock. Click add to cart. Sorry we are out of stock." Casady said.

When it comes to ammunition, there is pressure on everybody from the manufacturers to the distributors to those that resell that ammunition and it is not getting better anytime soon.

Several manufacturers have back orders of 14 months, some as long as two years.

James said, "Most of the manufacturers I have talked to have gone to round-the-clock production."

It is not just gun stores and recreational shooters scrambling, area police departments are starting to feel the impact.

Several departments KHOU 11 News talked to are putting limits on ammo that can be used for training on non-duty weapons.

So far, there are no outright shortages in our area, but plenty of departments are worried about their orders for next year, both in the ability to get the ammunition and what it will likely cost.

It takes plenty of ammo to train police officers.

One law enforcement rifle instructor said it takes between 800 and 1200 rounds to get certified on a police rifle, and that's for one officer on one gun.

It’s the political climate most believe is fueling the run on guns and ammo, and it seems that is not calming either.

Yes several to be exact.

Some are revolving bullet extractors.

Some are bolt action bullet extractors.

Some are semi auto bullet extractors.

Each has the ability to remove the bullet and deliver it to the person requesting the bullet and it destroys the powder and primer at the same time, thus rendering the individual ammo round useless until the time it is made ready to deliver another bullet to the person requesting it.

” “If” this gun control stuff fades again without changes people will remember and buy and stock up on ammo.”

Obama has made it fashionable to own a gun. The ladies can even color coordinate them with their outfits, which is a huge difference from 10 years ago.

If they do, it’s probably because they lost a HUGE portion of their customer base when they caved to the ‘assault weapon’ banshees. They’ll never get another dime from me.

Just checked “bulkammo” - they have ammo available.
No .22 LR though.

They are out of the brass at the Pro Bass by us also. No .22 mag ammo whatsoever. Finally snatched up 2 boxes at the third gun shop we went to.

If the time ever comes when they start trying to round up an confiscate guns and ammo they will be rounding up the people too.

When the left tells you they will exterminate 25 million people that can’t be reeducated, you better believe them.

By golly, they do!

Have you ever ordered from them? Are they dependable?

From what I’ve heard from different sources, many of the big chain ammo carriers, Wal-Mart, Academy Sports, Gander Mtn., etc. are not placing any new orders for ammo (some or all calibers, I don’t know) until all this talk of new regulations shakes out. They will continue to ship and sell the current stock in their warehouses, but for now they are not replenishing the stock in their distribution warehouses. Once it’s gone it’s gone until they start reordering again (IF they start reordering again). Sounds to me like Obama’s thug regime may be putting the squeeze on these ammo sellers behind the curtain.

Couple this from what I heard recently second hand from another that was talking to a friend that works in an ammo factory, that friend said their warehouses were full and nothing was being shipped out because no orders were being received from the big buyers mentioned above.

I’ll be the first to say, this could all be false (and I hope it is), or it could all be ominously true, time will soon tell.

If other FReepers know people that work in ammo factories, it would be very helpful if they could get some confirmation on this.

I wonder how much, if any, of the ammo shortage is due to the 1.4 billion round purchase by Homeland Security.

Went to a big gun show two weeks ago.
There are usually 2 or 3 bulk ammo sellers there but this time there wasn’t even one.

Ammo was in short supply - just a box or two here and there and prices were outrageous.

I went to the same show 4 years ago when Obama first got elected and created the first big scare.
There was a big rush to buy guns and ammo back then too but ammo was still available and people were buying in bulk.
Today the big stocks of bulk ammo are depleted.
Ammo sellers were saying they might get some new stock in sometime in the summer.

From my understanding, once you’re “verified” (age, payment, etc) and in their system, they ship “scary fast”, like, arrival in 2 days or less.

I have ordered from them, and Jack Spirko at the Survival Podcast has them as a verified sponsor.

(If you join up at the TSP, you can get a code for a free ammo can with your order.)

I’m feeling pretty smart lately, stocked up on all my centerfire stuff last year before the election. She Who Must Be Obeyed was giving me the pouty/frowny look every time I hit BulkAmmo but I look like a genius now.

I’m down to my last 300 .22LR and starting to feel a little nervous. Never seen it like this before, if you want CB caps or rat shot you can get it, but not the regular stuff.

you will find a good portion of this ammo on a table at the next gun show in your town marked up 4X it's original price. they camp at he stores buying it before the stock clerks can even put it on the shelves... now you have the worst gougers of all marking up stuff like .223 to over 1 dollar/round. i hope they choke to death on it... it's forcing 10x as many guys to reload and now you can't even get supplies again.

I can't wait until this commie is out of office so this BS will stop

BulkAmmo.com has been very reliable and speedy for me. About the only place I use any more. Occasionally Brownells but I’m waiting for some 12 ga. from them at the moment and they won’t even speculate on delivery dates.

I don't believe that for the last two at all. People line up before the stores open in our area and buy out the stock quickly as fast as they keep bringing it in. If they had stock in the warehouse, it would already be sold.

Even pure shooting stores like Carter Country have limited some ammo to one box per customer to try and serve as many customers as they can. It sucks to buy a new gun and not be able to buy ammo for it.

Couple this from what I heard recently second hand from another that was talking to a friend that works in an ammo factory, that friend said their warehouses were full and nothing was being shipped out because no orders were being received from the big buyers mentioned above.

Sorry, I call BS. There are multiple reports of manufactures going 24/7 trying to meet demand.

I doubt that.

If the bigger buyers quit ordering, that would just cut competition for the smaller suppliers and they would have plenty in stock, which appears not to actually be the case.

It has been less expensive to purchase new 40 cal, for example, ammo until recently. Even when using one’s own brass the lead, primers and powder cost per round was slightly more for reloads. Of course we saved our brass and made wise purchases of components well before this frenzy. Which is far worse than when the ZerObama was first elected. I pity those who didn’t heed the warnings from both the shooting community and the left’s telegraphing of their plans for us. But I think the message should be loud and clear for the tyrants that the 2nd Amendment was designed specifically to protect us from the likes of Schumers, Obamas and Feinsteins and their Marxist ideologues. Make every practice shot count and the real need will come natural.

Obama has made it fashionable to own a gun.

Not only has he fouled up the price and availability of guns and ammo, now he's going to cause a run on skeet ranges.
