Why higher benefits won’t solve child poverty: Addict parents will “waste cash on drink and drugs”

Giving more benefits to poor families will not address child poverty because too many irresponsible parents will spend it on alcohol or drugs, Iain Duncan Smith has warned.

The Work and Pensions Secretary said parental addiction—not family income—had emerged as the main factor in determining a child’s life chances. He insisted that the last government’s strategy of spending more than £170 billion ($269 billion) in additional welfare payments had failed comprehensively. …

Duncan Smith said Labour’s approach was a “vicious trap” and had left a “disturbing number” of people trapped in poverty. “There are around 100,000 people claiming sickness benefits whose illness is primarily down to their drug or alcohol addiction,” he said. “Of these, 23,000 have been claiming incapacity benefits for a decade or more. Instead of propping people up on benefits, we need to tackle the root cause of their hardship—the drug addiction itself.” …

Too bad we forgot the advice of Henry Ford.

“There are two fools in this world. One is the millionaire who thinks that by hoarding money he can somehow accumulate real power, and the other is the penniless reformer who thinks that if only he can take the money from one class and give it to another, all the world’s ills will be cured.”

And if anyone watched, family income has been dropping in America despite poverty, unemployment, and medicare benefits going up, so honestly, we’re witnessing the loss of America’s wealth by literally redistributing money. The man must be spinning in his grave!

“Society has been there and done that, endured the squalor, and now the leftists want to drag us backwards into the cesspool again.”

Years ago I participated in a chamber of commerce fundraising drive for the local headstart school. One day I visited the school and had a long talk with the principal. She told me many of the children of drug addicted mothers literally arrive at school in rags or underwear. Working with Goodwill, the school obtained clothes to outfit the children. The next day the children came back in rags or underwear. Social workers inquiring at the homes learned the mothers sold the good clothes the children were wearing for a fix. As a result the school began putting the children in good clothes when they arrived and redressing them in their rags when they went home in the afternoon.

We are now in the fourth and fifth generation of children growing up in this type of environment despite spending trillions of dollars. How will we ever break this cycle? It is destroying the country by creating millions of uneducated voters dependent on the state and willing to trade their liberty for more handouts.

Before Christmas there was a bike giveaway. They chose 300 children beforehand to receive them. There were at least 100 left. I figured there were that many parents who couldn’t even be bothered to awaken from their drunken stupor to go get a freee bike for their kid.

No, I would never support that. You would be no better than a liberal. They could bring back the work requirement.

If you want more of something you subsidize it. Why are we subsidizing bastardy and illegitimacy?
