MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) — Jimmy Lee Dykes moved to a rural Alabama neighborhood on a rutted red clay road more than a year ago. It didn't take long before he had developed a frightening reputation as a volatile man who threatened his neighbors at gunpoint and was viciously violent to wandering pets. Multiple neighbors said Dykes, a 65-year-old retired truck driver, was the man suspected of boarding a school bus full of children near his home, killing the driver and taking one 5-year-old boy hostage to open a standoff that entered its second full day Thursday. The neighborhood near Midland City, population 2,300, remained under siege after the Tuesday shooting, with the suspect and child holed up in a bunker-type shelter on the man's property that was equipped with electricity, food and TV.

Quick!

Someone should grab a pair of scissors and rush in and rescue the boy.

And no, this is not sarcasm..

I’m only going by what Homeland Security is recommending..

Please send the helicopters, armored personnel carriers, and 90% of on site LEO’s home. The guy is underground. We don’t need 100 on site LEO’s.

The need a couple of on site admins/negotiators, small EMT/fire dept. team and one 5-6 man SWAT team and a couple of guys to keep gawkers and press at bay.

If I was a homeowner in the 1 mile radius that were forced out I would be livid and more than likely in jail for re-entering my home.

If he threatened his neighbors with a gun, why wasn’t he arrested? How is it no one complained about this guy before he murdered someone and kidnapped a child?

"a man who once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, "

Where does one obtain a lead pipe these days?

Probably from an old "Clue" board game...

Agreed, this doesn’t need to be a circus. Any possibility of finding this guy’s ventilation system and pumping in some undetectable gas to put him to sleep for awhile? It would give authorities time to break in and rescue the young boy.

Prayers for this young child and LEO working to resolve this.

From reports on earlier threads, he might be the only law enforcement official within fifty miles that isn’t there. I like how somebody here described it as “LEO skip day”.

Ugh! Fox just interviewed the neighbor (who sounded like a transplant from Cali) who’s dog was beaten by the perp said she called animal control on him and not the cops! I would have pressed charges!

That was my first thought but what could they use that would work on the man without killing the boy first? The child could be overdosed and the man not even asleep yet.

Neighbors did complain. He was arrested. Two months ago for pulling a gun on a neighbor.

His day in court was to have been yesterday. It’s been reported that he said something like “they’re coming to get me”; as he shot the bus driver and took the boy.

You are half right, by my thinking.

That mob of cops is going to cause the bad guy to do something really rash. After all, he is a nut case.

But too many cops nowdays have the military mentality.

What I would do is the same thing a hunter does when he wants to shoot groundhogs or the like.

You become invisible.

I would send everyone home. I would then make a very sad announcement on TV, as I understand he has one, that the guy has in some way escaped. “He is a really smart guy, a survivalist, and he has in some way eluded us.”

I would post a sniper with a heat imagining scope at its maximum range from the entrance, behind the entrance, not in front of it.

Just as you would when shooting groundhogs.

He is so sure he is smarter than the cops that he would go for it and attempt to exit during the wee hours of the night.

It might take a few days, but he would eventually come out.

If I am wrong, so what. Nothing is being accomplished with the present tactics.

I think they could get a US Navy carrier task force up in Lake Seminole. Might have to do some dredging.

Let's see: the sheriff's department, local police, Alabama state police, , the FBI, US Marshals, ATF explosives specialists, SWAT teams, helicopters - all for one old guy in a hole.

They're practicing for the gun confiscation raids - right out in plain sight:

If he threatened his neighbors with a gun, why wasn’t he arrested?

Apparently he was arrested just before Christmas...heard that on a local talk show (Birmingham AL) this morning. The threatening incident happened around 12/11 (I think) and he was arrested sometime between then and Christmas. Not sure why he got out of jail, but depending on the actual charges he was probably released on his own recognizance or posted bail.
