Posted on 01/31/2013 7:11:03 AM PST by Tolerance Sucks Rocks
For many Americans, Fox News is their alternative choice for news.
Theyve made it the No. 1 cable news network, largely because they believe its fair and balanced promotional slogan.
Many even believe Fox leans to the right and provides news they cant get anywhere else.
But is Fox really different from the rest of the media? Or has it been successful merely at positioning itself as different?
Would it surprise you to know that individuals at News Corp., the parent company of Fox News, gave nearly six times as much money to Barack Obama than Mitt Romney in the 2011-2012 election cycle?
Would it surprise you to know that individuals at News Corp. gave more to Rep. Howard Berman, D-Calif., than to Mitt Romney?
Would it surprise you to know that individuals at News Corp. gave more to Ben Cardin, Democrat from Maryland, than to Mitt Romney?
Would it surprise you to know that News Corp. gave more than twice as much to Democratic candidates in 2012 than to Republicans?
Would it surprise you that this pattern was about the same in 2010 and 2008?
Would it surprise you to know that News Corp. gave far more money to Democrats running for both the House and Senate in 2012 than to Republicans?
Do the owners and top managers of Fox News and News Corp. not have the right to support any candidates they want to support?
Of course they do.
But the American people have a right to know where the hearts and minds and pocketbooks of their trusted news sources really are especially when it comes to politics.
Fox News has certainly learned there is a vast public audience whose values and worldviews are unserved by the major media. Thats the secret to its success.

Fox News Ratings Hit 12-year Low
Wednesday, January 30, 2013 09:49 PM
By: Matthew Auerbach
Fox News had its worst prime time ratings in January in the coveted 25-54 demographic since August 2001, a 12-year low, and its lowest total day ratings since June 2008, Politico reports.
The year started off badly for Foxs On the Record with Greta Van Susteren in particular, which suffered its worst month ever among the 25-54 demo. January also saw the channels lowest total viewership in the 10 p.m. hour since July 2008.
The numbers werent all bad. Fox still had nine out of the top 10 shows for the month. The only program to crack Fox’ total dominance was MSNBCs The Rachel Maddow Show which came in at the 10th spot.
I gave up on FOX News but I do watch:
Sportsman Channel and NRA Launch Outdoor TV Categorys First-Ever LIVE Daily Talk Show with NRANEWS Cam & Co.
One-hour Weekday Strip Show Offers Intelligent Talk, News, Guests & Information for Nations More than 80 Million Hunting, Shooting and Fishing Enthusiasts. Radio personality Cam Edwards brings authority and appeal to TV
Fox Business News is excellent.
Haven’t watched Faux News in a great many years. I’m tired of BOR and Hannity. I have no appetite for the wiles of northeastern RINOs.
No. It’s just as horrible as all the rest. I refuse to watch “news entertainment” regardless of it’s political philosophy.
I don’t watch it. It’s obsessed with pretty faces and heated exchanges of controversy. Occasionally it puts the fluff aside and covers an item that the other networks will not touch. I don’t need it. I get the latest from FR.
In recent months fox has devoted entirely too much time on trash journalism so I don’t watch much anymore. Tired of hearing about spoiled sports stars like armstrong, tibow and the new guy that had a girl friend that did not exist.. What a load of .....
I dumped TV in 1997. When I’m exposed to Fox news, I see it as a liberal news source with some conservative trappings. When I argue on the internets with liberals and they accuse me of being a FOX drone, I mention the above and it REALLY pi$$es them off.
Those of us that get our news of the web see ALL televised news as liberal, but some lean more to the left than others. Heck, I listen to NPR strictly for laughs. And it is comically far left.
Not much surprises me about Fox News, any more.
They are slowly but surely surrendering their territory they once had staked out, not because of encroachments as the leftist media move their direction, but as they simply abandon their previous positions on the right.
Not to say that Fox News is anything like, but as an analogy, Playboy magazine was once considered the most risque publication out there. But as Hugh Hefner got older, and the power behind the publication shifted, it has become almost mainstream. The same centripedal forces that pulled Playboy back to the “moderate” view, have been operating on Fox News.
Now we have to rely on Glen Beck and Blaze.com.
I think a lot of conservatives that watch fox regularly are realizing that they are liberal. And as the internet meets their news needs more and more, they are leaving fox.
I do watch Fox News. Conservative ideas do get a hearing there and no place else in the news world.
Despite who the employees supported, I do get to hear from conservative leaders. (And too many Rinos, but that’s the price. On other networks I don’t hear from conservative leaders at all.)
Once Fox became the top “news source”, News Corp decided it to make Fox News the top “entertainment source that presents topical information”.
AKA: Fox views itself as “entertainment” and not a news source.
I watch Morning Joe for the exact same reason!
Fox News. It’s the New York Post in video form. Right of Center, but dumbed down and Left of most FReepers.
I put it on in the morning for about an hour during breakfast but take it with more than a grain of salt. Then get my news here and an hour or 2 of Limbaugh at noon.
Given that Mitt Romney was, politically, Obama’s clone... why should they have given more to Romney?
“But as Hugh Hefner got older, and the power behind the publication shifted, it has become almost mainstream.”
Center for American Progress Christie Hefner: Climate change a factor in Chicagos murder rate
Have not watched any network news for years.
Drudge, FR, Instapundet, etc. provide me with my news input.
And - they are always faster, more correct, and have more depth than anything on TV.
My reply to anyone who attempts to debate issues and has received their info only from the MSM is to succinctly state that they are essentially uninformed and that they should go back and do their homework before taking the test.
It wasn’t the technology.
It was the vapidity of those on the screen.
So folks at FOXNEWS are particular about which liberal they support ...
I can't take Hannity in any form.
O'Reilly seems to be admire Obama from what I read.
Greta was a big lib back in her OJ trial days, what made her seem conservative?
Which one of the two, King Obama or Romney, would have done less damage to America? Fox had more loud mouth hard left talking points than the host gave the conservative voice. I have been lucky to get at least 15 or less minutes of view time and the rest is muted.
FNC stands out only in the sense that it is not so completely in the tank as all the others.
Fox News jumped the shark very badly since 2008.
WND/Farah is being very deceptive here...as usual.
NewsCorp is a massive entity, much bigger than just Fox News. NewsCorp is also newspapers around the world, a major Hollywood studio, an entertainment network, sports programming, etc.
In order to make a valid comparison, we’d need to have statistics of Fox News employee’s (not NewsCorp) contributions versus those of ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN/etc.
It started out differently, but Ailes has been liberalizing FNC to garner greater numbers of liberal viewers, so it is becoming more of the same old MSM. If I wanted to watch the likes of Whoraldo, Beckel, Kirsten Powers, Colmes, etal, all I would have to do is select MSNBC or any of the conventional network TV media. FNC is beginning to be a clone, I don’t watch it anymore. Limbaugh has it correct about the MSM, so correct it’s beyond denial.
I stopped watching Fox. They aren’t conservative enough for me. I make no apologies for my conservative/libertarian beliefs and I don’t want my news channel doing it either. All the rest of the news channels are unashamedly liberal even if they won’t admit it. Besides, who needs TV news? I’d much rather read Breitbart, Free Republic, and other information websites.
I dropped FoxNews from my life on November 7th. I am finding “The Blaze TV” to be much more enjoyable.
I used to have FoxNews on all the time, back to its very beginning. It was pretty much the default position for my tv-set. But it really changed around the time Karl Rove joined, and especially after the 2010 mid-terms. Previously it at least offered a mild, generic conservative voice, and was apt to cover grassroots-oriented concerns and issues. But post-Rove, the network has become nothing more than a beltway-centric cheerleader for the GOP-E, and as such, continues its liberal lurch.
I find it almost entirely unpalatable now. Hardly watch more than a half-hour per month, if that. Usually only stop at the channel if I happen to catch someone like Malkin or West or the now-departed Palin. It just amazes me how much I’ve dropped the darned channel, but I can’t stand the direction its taken.
Fox News has started spouting the party line a little too often for my comfort. Now they have hired Dennis Kuccinich. WTF??
We get all our news on the internet.
Yes, I have found over the last couple of years, that I have been watching Fox Business channel more than Fox News channel. I love the Varney & Co. show they have on early in the morning.
Well compared to CNN and MSNBC, Fox News would be viewed as “conservative”. But, and here is the “but”, it has changed, sadly. I watch mostly now at best Greta. Not as much as I used to.
About 6 years and as many trillion dollars late....
The ardent Hussein Heads never watch Faux News, yet can’t stop stupidly repeating to conservatives, “Stop watching Fox News!”
FU Hussein Heads, and the god you worship, too!
Fox news is ran by owners who realize that the conservative news market is under-served and the owners are there to make a buck. When Fox news promotes the GOP-e, then liberals win elections and poorly-informed conservatives feel like they’ve been “serviced”.
For example: Fox news was an early promoter of Mitt Romney this past election; most Freepers recognized early on the Mitt Romney could not beat Obama. Yet, after Romney won the GOP primary, some conservatives believed that Fox news was on their side because Fox news continued to promote Mitt Romney.
It was a gimmick to retain conservative viewers, without a risk of losing the election.
The only show on Fox that is truly conservative, with no liberal counterpoint, is on at 3 in the morning. What does that tell you?
If you are using TV news as your primary source of information, then you are either sorely uninformed or purposely misinformed.
Yes Fox news is fair and balanced as opposed to the other networks. Just look at how it drives the left out of their minds. The fact that some Freepers think it’s too lefty is no surprise. Many here want to live in an echo chamber.
I said “almost mainstream”.
Christie Hefner has wandered off into the fever swamps, but only a part of her philosophy has actually gotten on the pages of the publication.
Unfortunately, it is in vogue today to blame almost everything on an unproven concept, global warming (or climate change, the newest permutation of this travesty of reason), which is only marginally different for blaming everything on George W. Bush. And uncritical minds tend to accept that which is most frequently repeated in their presence.
Christie Hefner does not have a highly developed sense of critical thinking. Perfect member of Center for American Progress.
It is all about ratings. Nothing more. Fox shows just enough “conservative” views to draw in liberals viewers that want to get angry. Occasionally there is a glimmer of conservatism or at least common sense but in those cases I find it is more to get a viewer reaction or get them a by line on another network.
Case, the interview with Howard Wasdin was short and sweet. I bet it made heads explode in libville.
Or conversely, you could compare NewsCorp to Time/Warner or Turner Enterprises, but I suspect that comparison would be apples to apples, as far as political leanings go.
Plus if they were too conservative they would not be allowed anywhere near the president or any of his ilk. They want to be invited to the parties too.
Newscorp is a huge, monstrous corporation, that doesn’t really give two craps about the American left/right political struggle, and which might not even remember that they own FNC. The Murdoch family is not conservative at all, and I have no idea what kind of people their upper level executives are. The one thing I do know is that Roger Ailes is in control at FNC, there’s no question at all of his political leanings and if I have to pick between the news sites, I’ll pick the one he’s running. I don’t need a network to cheer lead for my side, I just need one that gives us a chance to be heard, and there isn’t really another option on cable. People expecting or wanting FNC to be solidly on our team are deluding themselves, I’m just thankful that I can watch a news channel without wanting to put a boot through my flat screen 2-3 times an hour.
They are an alternative to Obama channel MSNBC but I notice FNC is more entertainment compared to MSNBC which is more progressive activism.
Notice FNC commercials are mostly targeted to seniors ~ over 60, MSNBC to young minorities
FNC certainly is not Democrat. I call it the Republican channel.
Besides, I dont blindly trust any source of info.
Rush is more often wrong than not.
You may have a point there. Sometimes I see something on FOX and realize I saw it on the internet a couple days prior.
I am really getting tired of FNC. Have not watched much of it since last November. Bill O’Reilly is Ted Baxter on steriods. Shep Smith belongs on MSNBS. Juan Williams, and Bob Beckel are insufferable. Geraldo is too touchy feely and emotional. The Fox business line up is much better with Lou Dobbs and Cavuto and the other anchors.
As for me.....would rather watch Andrew Zimmern eating bugs, Anthony Bourdain dispatching a pig, or Bobo squatchin than the clowns on FNC these days. And btw——The Military Channel is the BEST these days....far better than the so called History Channel IMHO.
Irrelevant; both are socialists and socialism is the poison killing America -- both prescribe lethal doses.
I voted 3rd party because I did not want to facilitate the poisoning.
FoxNews, the Missing White Chick Channel. They did nothing but cover one missing white girl after another.
Fox does present news not found on other channels, however, they think putting on liberals to lie to us is “balanced”. I don’t call being lied to “balanced”.
I catch Stewart Varney, Neil Cavuto, and an sometimes a clip on the Fox Business channel, but I never turn to FoxNews as it is nothing but a liberal entertainment channel.
It’s a business. Period. Sales are down because their customers became less interested in their product.
As for me, when Obama won again, I checked out from being a news junkie. I get most of the news I need right here as a lurker.
In the past month I have heard BOR once again say he was for
He believes in abortion if the “mother’s health is endangered”.
He believes in homosexual marriages, saying “what difference would it make, it’s not going to affect me one way or the other”.
He was all for women in combat, saying if they can do the job more power to them.
He saw nothing wrong with sodomites invading the US military.
And there are still people that listen to this liberal blowhard and actually think he’s a conservative. Unbelievable.
the only person ever on Fox News that deserved any degree of trust was Judge Andrew Napolitano. when the judge started ending his news segments of how out of sink DC is with our Constitution and how the obozo is using his position in the WH to commit illegal activities (crimes), Fox got rid of him. To me, that said it all, I haven’t watched Fox News since.
until about 6 months ago, those of us who follow your example, using the web for news, have been a day ahead of Rush, Hannity etc. etc. Finally Rush started to mention Powerline, Briebart and others, then the others show joing in “a little.” but true libertarian and conservative ideas have not yet made the leap to politicians in office over 4 years, and certainly not to Fox News during the day.
Fox actually offers an occasional glimpse of reality - not available on most other channels.
(view it and weep.)
