A fight over $5 between Bronx school children escalated to the point where the police were called and a seven-year-old boy was arrested, handcuffed, and kept in custody for 10 hours, according to the child's family, who is threatening to sue the city for $250 million. When Wilson Reyes' mother Frances Mendez arrived at the 44th Precinct, she was shocked to see her son handcuffed to the wall. Mendez said, "My son was crying, ‘Mommy, it wasn’t me! Mommy, it wasn’t me!’ I never imagined the cops could do that to a child. We’re traumatized... Imagine how I felt seeing my son in handcuffs! It was horrible. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing."

According to the Post reporters who spoke to Mendez and took a photograph of her with the boy, the whole mess started when there was a fight over another child's $5....

The NYPD has a history of handcuffing unassuming criminal types—like the 7-year-old special ed student, the 12-year-old who doodled on her desk, and the 15-year-old who used her student Metrocard.

While I'm certainly pleased to hear that New York City has become so crime-free that the police have time and attention to devote to childish squabbled, I really think this is excessive.

As if cuffing the kid wasn't enough, here's the defense offered by the police spokesperson, Kim Royster:

The attorney is fabricating the amount of time the child was in custody." She insists Wilson was only held for four hours and 40 minutes.?!?!?!?

She won’t get $250 million, but the city will settle with her.

Maybe she’ll be able to get her son out of the deplorable public school system.

Oh, that makes it better. /sarc

I generally have great respect for law enforcement, but EVERY police officer and civilian employee at the precint who was aware of his detention should be fired. They should also lose their gun rights as they are all, clearly, dangerously insane.

Handcuffing a 7 year old child for any period of time is unecessary, 4 1/2 hours is absurd and would be comical if it were not so cruel.

And all this over $5, that the boy apparently didn’t even steal?

The police are just doing their job creating the mentally disturbed mass shooters of the future.

“Hands in the air citizen, I’m helping you!”

But the badguy is getting away!

“Well have to ask you about that and how you helped him escape us!”

I’m the one who called you morons! Instead of yelling at me and cuffing me, how about chasing him?!

“But then you’d get away!”

Should be relieved the police didn’t charge this 5 yo for pointing his finger at the police, and then have the additional weapons charge, no license to carry, etc.

My teacher used to make everyone in the class close their eyes and put their face down on their desk. Then she would tell the class it was ok if you knew who did (blank) and to slip one hand up and then put it back down and everything would be fine. I never saw anyone lift a finger. I peeked.

I’m not making excuses for the cops but why couldn’t the school handle this? Further more what are the cops going to do with kids this young anyway? They can’t be charged in this incident. This is a matter for the school and the parents to settle. The problem is that school personnel are scared of to deal with the public so they immediately call the cops.

Its stories like these that define the urban metro areas of the USA versus us provincial rubes out here in flyover country.

Big city liberals warn these things happen in places like where I live, yet they don’t. It happens where they live, over and over again. Yet, their unfounded stereotype lives on.

When you see liberals even making excuses for it, as seen on Gothamist, it becomes clear they’re willing inmates in their own prison who’ve become so institutionalized they spook one another with ghost stories about the outside world to discourage escape.
