A Chicago-area high school has an unconventional safety drill slated for today: During its "code red drill," Cary-Grove High School is going so far as to have someone in the hallway shoot blanks from a starter pistol. The point? "To provide our teachers and students some familiarity with the sound of gunfire," said the principal in a letter. Teachers will keep students inside, with doors locked and curtains drawn, as police sweep the school. Students are aware of the drill, and there will be a PA announcement beforehand, the Northwest Herald reports.
"The purpose is to take the Code Red drill one step further," explains the police chief, adding that "many" students have "never heard a gunshot before." Needless to say, parents don't think it's a great idea, CBS Chicago reports. Some point out that not all guns sound alike; one calls it "sick." Others are in favor: "Nowadays it’s better to be safe than sorry," says one; a school spokesperson claims they've heard from as many supportive parents as dissenting ones, and adds, "Any step we can take to give them an advantage in a crisis situation is a step we should be taking."
Keep in mind Cary-Grove is some 40 miles away from Chicago. Whole different scene there.
I think the nation's murder capital has that down pat.
How long will it take for the first dozen 911 calls to come from the school as a result of this drill? On a related note, how may armed robberies, shootings, murders, etc will take place while the police are distracted by this?
The right to bear scissors shall not be infringed.
I don’t really believe a starters pistol equates to “gunfire”. I do believe they would all know gunfire when and if they hear it.
the kids in chicago probaby can ID gunfire before they start school.l
Back in my jr. high days, during a fire drill I impulsively pulled one of the fire alarms on my way out the door (stupid - I know). Everyone gathered in their prearranged areas and waited for the alarm to stop sounding - only it didn’t stop.
After a few minutes the alarm was joined by the sound of sirens and soon the school was overrun with fire trucks. Then they were joined by cop cars. In short order it was like a scene from a disaster flick.
We were kept waiting on the street for close to an hour (can you imagine trying to keep order on 500+ kids for that long?!) and finally they silenced the alarm and shuttled us back in.
They conducted two assemblies where the lectured, scolded, and pleaded for someone to rat out the perpetrator. I don’t know if anyone saw, but no one told.
We didn’t have another fire drill that entire year.
Trying To Disarm Americans
I think you should turn yourself in. :)
Useless drill. When these kids go home, they hear gunshots every hour in Chicago.
I really doubt that the kids are transported 40 miles each way everyday.
Maybe they should do a few flash-bangs and frags too for realism. /sarc
On the other hand, now that Illinois is allowing concealed carry, they should just arm the teachers.
Concealed carry is still not allowed in Illinois. The 7th Circuit gave Springield 180 days to make a plan.
HAHAHA, they better be careful as the kids will fire back with real bullets!
I am the principal of a private school and our local law enforcement has offered to come to any school in our city and do a mock Active Shooter drill. They even offered to fire .223 AR and pistol blanks in the building for the drill. However, this would be done when students are not present—the purpose is to train staff.
