U.S. on alert over Canadians [Islamists] in Algeria

Signs that Canadian citizens were involved in the attack by hostage-taking Islamist militants on a remote gas plant in Algeria are of great concern to American authorities, U.S. intelligence officials said on Thursday.

While Algerian authorities apparently have not yet provided Western governments with cast-iron proof, a senior U.S. intelligence official said: “We’re taking very seriously the reports of the two Canadians’ involvement.”

Confirmation that Canadian citizens were involved in the attack on the In Amenas facility in the Algerian desert would raise concerns about a worrying nexus between North America and North African militants.

At least 38 plant workers, including citizens of Japan, the United States, Britain and France, and nearly 30 militants were killed in the operation to retake control of the facility.

After their security forces stormed the facility, Algerian officials said two Canadians were among the attackers and that one of them co-ordinated the attack.

Some witnesses, whom Western national security sources consider credible, said one of the hostage-takers spoke English with either a North American or British accent.

Canadian? no, you don’t call them Canadian, you call them moslem. That’s insulting to not only Canadians everywhere, but any other nationality as well.

They are about as “Canadian” as Obama is “American”.

“Canadian was recruited to train at al-Qaida camp, say Mauritanian authorities”

APRIL 11, 2013 |AHMED MOHAMED, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SNIPPET: “NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania - A young Canadian who headed to North Africa to study the Qur’an is now serving two years in a Mauritanian prison after authorities say he was recruited to train at an al-Qaida camp in northern Mali, an official said Thursday.

Aaron Yoon, 24, reportedly had travelled to Morocco with two Canadians accused of taking part in the terror attack on a BP-operated natural gas plant in southeastern Algeria earlier this year.

Mauritanian authorities say Yoon had ties to al-Qaida’s affiliate in Africa — al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM.

“This Canadian citizen stated to investigators that he had come from Morocco to study the Qur’an and Islamic law...””

“Muslim student jailed for terrorism returns to Canada”

Published July 26, 2013
AFP

OTTAWA, Province of Ontario (AFP) –

SNIPPET: “Aaron Yoon, who is of Korean descent and converted to Islam from Catholicism, arrived in Toronto, said Canada’s public broadcaster.

He had served nearly two years in Nouakchott after being convicted in July last year when he was 24.

Yoon had been arrested in December 2011 when he tried to visit the camps of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Mali, according to the indictment against him.

He denied any link to terrorism, saying he had come to Mauritania from Morocco to study the Koran and learn Arabic, but Mauritanian authorities maintained he had “strong links with AQIM terrorists and his plan to join the movement is indisputable.””

Korean muslims, now there is a rare breed.

They only got one mosque but they did put it where everyone in the Itawon neighborhood of Seoul can see it.
