California's Hispanic Population Projected To Outnumber White In 2014 By Alex Dobuzinskis
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California's Hispanic population will equal that of whites this year before becoming the state's largest demographic group in 2014 for the first time since statehood in 1850, a government report showed on Thursday.
That change in the most populous U.S. state will make it the third where whites do not comprise a plurality of the population, after New Mexico and Hawaii.
The shift is occurring alongside nationwide growth in the Hispanic population, which grew to 16.7 percent of the total in 2011 from 12.5 percent in 2000, according to U.S. Census figures.
It also comes amid a national debate on immigration that Democratic President Barack Obama waded into this week when he outlined his goals for immigration reform in a speech in Las Vegas.
Obama called on Congress to give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, among other measures, a day after a bipartisan group of U.S. senators unveiled outlines of an immigration reform proposal they will try to pass this year.
The newly released report from the California Department of Finance, which regularly crunches demographic figures, says that whites comprised 40 percent of the state's population in 2010, with Hispanics at 38 percent.
California has 38 million residents in total.
The latest projections indicate the Hispanic population "will be even with the number of non-Hispanic whites by mid-2013," the Department of Finance said in a statement.
"Early in 2014, the Hispanic population will become the plurality in California for the first time since California became a state," the statement said.

By 2020, Hispanics will make up 40.8 percent of the California population and whites will comprise.....

I have a cousin who with her husband sold their business and moved out of CA a few years ago after the kids graduated from college., they saw the hand writing on the wall.
Most Mexicans are mestizos; i.e., of mixed white and Indian ancestry.

Dude where do you live? The majority of Hispanics in California are anything but White Caucasians! When was the last time you filled out any government form? White Caucasians are any and all races from Europe. There are more and more Hispanics that like to call themselves Caucasian to avoid the stigma but Mexicans are not Caucasian. I think you are confused with over used Hispanic and Latino tags. I think perhaps a Spaniard could claim to be Caucasian, but that is not how our government overlords see it.
Finally, when things go South, whitey can’t be blamed. Hispanics will be responsible for the economy and society they create with their votes.
I noticed a lot of money is heading out, too. That is not a good sign.
Actually, most Mexicans are Mestizo, which is mix of European and Indian ancestry. I don’t consider Indians to be what you’d call white. Have you ever seen a real life Mexican?
So nice of Reuters to lead with a falsehood. By 1850, Anglos wildly exceeded Hispanics in number. There may have been only 2,000 Mexican citizens in the whole State. Most of them considered themselves Spanish wanting nothing to do with a Mexican government that had appointed 19 governors in 27 years.
True today, but when California became a State, most of the Mexicans were of European origin.

I think you WERE right some years back... but today many people associate ‘hispanic’ with a person or group who illegally broke into our country. I don’t think any ethnic group would be welcome if their primary association was they scammed their way in... it’s sad for the people who were here legally - and welcomed.

And I didn’t say a thing about “white caucasions”, but then again if Mexicans stayed out of the fields, they would be not as dark as they are. I’ve got two daughters. Both have the same full-blooded Mohawk great grandmother. My 34 year old is light-skinned like me and her Scottish
ancestors. My 28 year old has darker skin and is mistaken for an Indian all the time, and if she lays in the sun for a day she looks like just another Mohawk from up-state NY.
By the way both my daughters are caucasions.

I think everyone is misreading what I wrote: I said Hispanic...not Mexican.
Of course most Mexicans are Mestizo.
However, go to South America and a majority of Hispanics are nominally white.
