As a 14 year-old, and a freshly-minted Eagle Scout, I had a terrible crush on my 11 year-old cousin Mary, and she on me. Although not a first cousin, Mary was close enough to the family that she spent a week or two down the New Jersey shore with us that summer in our ramshackle one-bedroom bungalow. My parents got the bedroom, and the dozen or so visitors and kids slept together in the all-purpose general room.
So intense was my desire just to reach out and touch her that it kept me awake at night. That is the way 14 year-old boys are. As it happens, a variety of restraints, some internal, many external, kept me from doing so, but I can still remember the frustrated passion of it all. I suspect that 14 year-old boys who are attracted to other boys feel that passion just as intensely. If the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America has its way, though, these boys will be able to indulge their passions in ways I could not even have dreamed of. They will get to shower with their 11 year-old crushes, skinny-dip with them, maybe even share a two-man pup tent. Even though I was more self-disciplined at 14 than most, these are temptations I could never have resisted.
Those parents who would willingly expose their 11 year-old sons to these scenarios are flirting with criminality. The fact is that 18 year-old boys have little more control over their passions than 14 year-olds. And as Jerry Sandusky proved, if proof be needed, some 50 year-old men can be just as reckless. No, not all homosexuals are pedophiles, it is just that a newly reconstituted BSA will attract those who are.

I am not homophobic but I would no more allow a son of mine to be a scout in the organization if it allowed homosexual members or scout masters than I would allow a daughter to be a member of the Boy Scouts.
There is too great a threat there. It’s just common sense to avoid this sort of temptation.
I was a Boy Scout when I was 14. If there was a Scout Master who was a little light in the loafers. I would have left the Troop. We has some teachers that were. But you had to go to school. You didn’t have to be a Boy Scout and neither do gay guys.
Do the Girl Scouts allow young heterosexual male scout leaders take the girls on outings alone?
Same difference with gay boy scout leaders with a bunch of young boys.
Back in the 90’s my church had these choir boys from out of town come sing at our church and then they stayed at the houses of church members.
This eskimo teen boy that spent the night at our house snuck into my younger brother’s room late that night to grope him in his sleep.
Much to his chagrin, I still give my brother a hard time about the incident.
Back in the 70’s our troop master’s nickname was “Homo Bill” we didn’t know if he really was gay, but we kept an eye on him just in case.
RE: Homo Bill
HOMO means MAN in Latin.
That could also mean, “Bill the Man” :)
The problem of openly gay scouts is one thing, but I presume there are gay boys in scout troops, because there are gay people everywhere, and even if they are only 1% of the population, you’d expect 1 out of 100 boys would be gay.
I think the straight boys know this, and the bigger problem would be that if you were gay and let it be known, your life in scouts wouldn’t be a pleasant one. Nobody would want to tent with you, or shower with you (any more than a 14-year-old girl scout would want to tent or shower with a boy, and for the same reasons, so it isn’t “bigotry”).
The problem with allowing openly gay boys to be in scouts is that, if that was the official position, you’d then have to enforce code of conduct to prevent the other boys from acting in a normal, prudent fashion, so that the gay scout felt accepted.
Having said that, I am sure there are gay scouts, and they behave appropriately, and their friends know, and so they are accepted, and it doesn’t cause problems. Exceptions maybe, but I think the current policy, which is really more of a “don’t ask, don’t tell, and don’t make a deal” seems to work fine.
I am more concerned with adult leaders who are gay. Not parents who help out, but the actual leadership. On the other hand, I would also object to female scout masters, and yet I understand we have those already.
It’s harder to argue once you allow a female scout master, that you are rejecting gay scout masters because of the sexual attraction issue.
For me, especially an attractive woman as scoutmaster would distract the boys from learning how to be boys. It’s bad enough that most of the public school teachers are female, and society is driving fathers out of the home. It’s hard for boys to have time with good male role models for good male bonding.
The gay scoutmaster would simply make that much more difficult. Also, I think it is easy to defend a policy not allowing gay leaders, since the scouts are for the boys, not the adult leaders.
Do they have lesbian scout leaders?
Back when I was a boy scout our troop leader was a fellow scout’s mom. All I can say about “desires” is that I was really interested in his sister. While the sister was not a member of the troop she did come to the meetings and take part in some of the activities.
Perhaps you were lucky. Mine was a Drill Sgt from WW1. All we did was march around a gym as he yelled at us.
The “Queering” of America is in progress...
The attack on morality... the assault on honesty..
I wouldn’t either, and I don’t give a rat’s ass whether anyone thinks me “homophobic” or not.
It is easier to say than to do. None the less, to pass this test, the BSA must resist whatever is put against them, no matter the financial costs or negative public relations campaigns or legal action, they must not cave in.
To those in the BSA leadership, the oaths you take are supposed to mean something to you and you were given leadership at this time and place for a reason.
Yes indeed, this is a test for one and all. Look it up.
And while thinking it through, keep in mind the damage this issue issue and the few known catholic priests have done to others and to the catholic church's reputation.
That wasn’t my argument. However, given the number of female teachers caught having sex with teenaged boys, I think the era where women are considered pristine is long gone.
There is a specific argument about sexual attraction that is weakened when you allow females to be in leadership roles that have direct contact with the boys.
Weakened does not mean dismissed.
I think women in contact-leadership roles in boy scouts is a mistake. You might as well have women in big brothers.
Thanks for the correction.
They eventually become basketball, volleyball and softball coaches.
No, in Latin it means "man" or human. As in homo sapiens or "Ecce homo," 'behold the man' as Pilate said of Jesus.
"homo" in Greek means "same."
"hetero" in Greek means "different."
Those Greeks were good at this.
I agree with this 100%...They are trying to make it seem as if it is an acceptible lifestyle...put them all on an island and let them reproduce..
