Former First Dog Barney Bush — a black Scottish terrier known for chasing golf balls and taking America on video tours of the White House — has passed away after a battle with lymphoma. He was 12.

Former President George W. Bush announced on Friday the passing of the “little fellow,” saying in a news release that “after twelve and a half years of life, his body could not fight off the illness.”

“Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House,” said Bush, who also released Friday an oil painting he did of Barney. “He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal.”

He showed the press what he thought of them.

Showed them what we all think of them.

You have a Plott Hound!?!

Is FRee Republic some kind of branch of the AKC? All these unusual breeds that never show up in real life represented here! I’m impressed.

That is one of the saddest stories I have heard in a long time.

We had a basset whose older companion was put to sleep. He started wailing when his buddy was euthanized even though he was in another room. It was absolutely heartbreaking.

These wonderful creatures are of more worth than most people I know.

That just breaks my heart. I had read that if you show the dead dog to his companion and let them sniff, then they know that they are gone. We did that with our first pair. Maybe if kept him from waiting for her to walk in the door. Can’t stand it that your dog actually cried for him and never picked up that toy again. That is just heart wrenching.

Whatever you do, don’t ever get a Lakeland Terrier. Have had two of them. Craziest dogs in the world. Can’t even blame it on overbreeding, since they are strictly regulated. They just have something wrong with them in the head.

Well, my grandmother on my father’s side was a Plott
from North Carolina and I always wanted one so when
one came up I grabbed him.
A beautiful brindle colored hound, he rode everywhere
with me.

I went to the Coon Dog cemetary over by Tuscumbia Miss.
once, way off the beaten track but well worth it.
Lots of Coon Champions buried there and other hounds too.
At the entrance is a statue of a coon up a tree with a
baying hound at the base. Most of the tombstones have
the dogs collars tied to them, a very quiet and peaceful
place. Wish I could have taken trooper there but we
buried him next to several other dogs so he wasn’t alone.

My brother has a Scotty-their second one. Full of personality. He’s always telling me the hilarious things the dog does.

That’s not a bad oil painting President Bush did of Barney.

One of the finest creatures to ever live in the WH.

I’ve no doubt the Bush Family loved him dearly and mourn him like family

I would love to go to that coon cemetery. I love hounds. As much as I love the Dandies, I think I will rescue a dog next time and have a Dandie.

Here is the url
http://www.coondogcemetery.com/

If you get a chance to read “Where the Red Fern Grows.”
It’s about aboy and his coon dogs.
I read it in the fall on the deer stand and when it
gets to the very sad end, my tears fall on the
dry leaves like rain.

My father was a country boy and had dogs like that
so it really means a lot to me.

Barney and Miss Beasley planned a big Holiday Extravaganza at the White House! Video here. Features the late, great Tony Snow.

The pictures are as if they were taken of “Baxter” my first scottie who died of a lymphoma at 8. I now have a wheaton scottie, “Duffee”, who is 10 and has recently gone deaf, but doesn’t appear to be botherd by his deafness and is very healthy otherwise. Last year I inheritated my Mother’s 10 year old blue healer “Daux” who is blind, he compleatly lost his sight about 18 months ago but copes very well and he also does not seem to be bothered by his loss of sight. Unlike Duffee, Daux is very intelligent and a problem solver.

I didn’t mean to make you sad. The Golden puppy had a happy life. She was depressed for a day, or so, and then she became just a happy puppy. But, she wouldn’t play with the rubber toy. What’s more, she seemed to sense that he wasn’t coming back when my husband and Wolfie left for the vet. She chased them to the door and watched out the window as they left and kicked up a fuss — unusual.

What was so strange is tht she was used to Wolfie going places without her because he would go to the groomer and the vet all the time, and she would stay home. But she knew something was up the morning he went to the vet the last time. Probably because I was crying. But also because he was suffering from seizures and was on anti-seizure meds.

Unfortunately, he got worse after every seizure (despite all of our efforts to keep his system in balance) until he just wasn’t right any more. I have no doubt that the Golden could smell the imbalance in his system. At the end he tried to bite us and would stand right in front of you in the house and pee on your shoe.
