Martin Luther King Jr. High School coach shoots attackers

Police sources tell 7 Action News that a women's basketball coach from Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School shot two men who attacked him as he was walking two basketball players to their cars in the school parking lot. Police sources say the coach was walking the two girls to their cars when two men allegedly approached and one pulled out a gun and grabbed him by his chain necklace. The coach then pulled out his gun and shot both of them, according to sources. The man who shot the attackers was 70 years old, according to police. One of the attackers was found dead in the median on Lafayette Boulevard, and the other was taken to a local hospital, according to police sources. We've learned that both of the men had attended the high school, and one had been recently expelled. Police sources say the coach has a Concealed Pistol License and is reportedly a reserve police officer. They say he is fully cooperating with authorities. Crime scene tape could be seen on Lafayette Boulevard and also around the back parking lot of the school near the gym. Students could be seen being walked to their cars late Friday night.

1. Sounds like a ‘good shoot’
2. easy to infer he was carrying on “government property”
3. sure hope his reserve officer status enabled #2.

Has she been arrested yet? She must have violated the schools/gun regulation thus she should be arrested. Bad guys (did they live?) will probably sue for them (her and school district) no longer being able to pursue their chosen careers. Thanks for protecting yourself and the students.

Sounds like the coach was carrying on school property despite the law.

Good thing too.

I guess the saying is correct, don’t pick a fight with an old geezer because he can’t fight he’ll just have to shot ya.

The best way to stop a bad man with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

But the media said the NRA was crazy to think that a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun. What else will the get wrong?

I hope it isn’t a problem that he was carrying on school property. If he was a police officer, then he was OK, according to the CCW law, right?

Good. All humans have the right and the obligation to repulse anyone who attacks to kill or injure. Deadly force may be used if necessary. This right does not come from government, and so government can not take away the right.

Probably so on the carry issue. Detroit police requires its officers to be armed at all times.

"Has she been arrested yet? She must have violated the schools/gun regulation thus she should be arrested."

"Reserve deputy". I believe that police and other officers are "exempt" from the "no-defense school zones" laws.

And indeed, that is the answer for those who don't want to allow teachers and school staff to CCW.....train'em and deputize'em.

Coach was illegally carrying a firearm in a gun free zone so he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Then make him a martyr and get the damn law rescinded..........

We've learned that both of the men had attended the high school, and one had been recently expelled

A now retired good friend of mine was a vice-principal in a Warren school district and he and fellow male teachers used to carry concealed weapons until the gun free zone law went into effect back around 2002 or 2004.

Nobody, not even the principal knew they carried except their own little group........

Detroit police requires its officers to be armed at all times.

No it does not, carrying while off duty is at the discretion of the officer.........

Yes, Civil disobedience.!
These times call for more of this.!
I carry all the time. No permit.
I am a criminal because of a stupid law.
This accepted practice of should not have ever happened.
