(CNN) -- On Thursday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced the Defense Department would lift the ban on women serving in combat, marking another significant milestone for equality in our nation. Taking this critical step forward to include women in combat strengthens our military by reducing the burden of the disproportionate number of soldiers who are making sacrifices. I sincerely hope that this will spark a national debate about who is fighting our wars and whether all of America can say that we're sharing the sacrifice.
Since January 2003, at the height of the debate on the possible unilateral strike against Iraq, I have advocated for a reinstatement of the military draft to ensure a more equitable representation of people making sacrifices in wars in which the United States is engaged.

So we’re going to draft more people into the military as the we cut the military budget.
Ha, I remember when he pulled this stunt a couple of years ago. Congress said, ok Charlie, let’s vote on it. Oops.
In the name of eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-qwal-it-tay!/sarc
“whether all of America can say that we’re sharing the sacrifice”
this utter garbage comes from a conniving, thieving, dishonest communist who believes the caroonish caricature the lying, dishonest media portrays of the military. There are all kinds in the military, not just hardscrabble and ghetto raised. He speaks with forked tongue.
I suggest we follow the Israeli model. EVERYONE SERVES. It would allow everyone to understand where our country stands.
We couldn't possibly afford a military that big. We'd have to eliminate research & development, advanced weaponry, etc. just to build barracks for a multitude of poorly-trained short-timers that don't want to be in the military.
Absolutely not! We are not to be enslaved by our government. They work for US, not the other way around. I would NEVER join the military branch of this worthless communist administration, and would never serve under any democRAT.
Thankfully, I’m old enough to be exempt.
Rangel has been advocating for a return to the Draft for years. That being said, it seems only fair that the ladies will need to register for Selective Service just like the boys do. I don’t like it.
yes, and make it a partisan issue. have all the young ‘uns blame the democrats....
Instead of a “more equal” military, perhaps we should pursue the best military possible. Results matter, particularly when the security of the nation is at stake.
Rangel burps this out every 6 months regular as clock work.
Perhaps Rangel and the cowards in DC would like to take the lead and go to Afganistan and walk point.
You see the military as a gigantic social program to mold citizens into you preferred configuration.
Except for the details of the configuration your idea is exactly the same as the progressive’s idea of the purpose of government.
I reject you both.
No, you’re missing the bigger point. I favor a system that takes into account the principles of risk, reward and responsibility, whether it is in military service or the business world. Do you really think the draft would affect enough people to be a gigantic social program to mold citizens when it competes against entitlement programs that are out of control? I think voters should be of an age/maturity to reasonably know the effects of what they vote for. For instance, look at the recent tax increases that were to affect only those with incomes in excess of $250,000. This proposal sounded good on the surface and enjoyed widespread support among those who did not think it would affect them. Now we are dealing with reality, and many of those who supported it are now being hit with tax increases proportionately higher than the increases for the high income wage earner that was to carry the load. Had they thought they were at risk, they would have looked beyond the sound bite and given the proposal a more serious review, perhaps finding that they, not the proposed target, were to bear the burden of the tax increase.
“...would never serve under any democRAT.
Thankfully, Im old enough to be exempt.”
I guess you are not now and have never been eligible for the Miltia:
Sec. 311. Militia: composition and classes
(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the
(b) The classes of the militia are - (1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and (2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.
Well, mark me down as unorganized militia. But I still will never fight or serve FOR anything resembling today’s democrat.
My uncle was on Omaha Beach on D-Day in WW2; He served in theatre in Korea and Vietnam, to stop the spread of communism across the world. Now, we have a communist in the White House, and a large contingent of synchophants in the House and Senate, not to mention the mainstream media.
Uncle Harold has to be rolling over in his grave. This is NOT the country for which he fought and served, and it’s not a country that I will fight for and serve in its present form.
Yes, I’ll fight to restore it to the constitutional republic that it once was, if called upon. But I cannot, I will not stand on the side of the corrupt institution that our federal government has become.
