You see the military as a gigantic social program to mold citizens into you preferred configuration.

Except for the details of the configuration your idea is exactly the same as the progressive’s idea of the purpose of government.

I reject you both.

No, you’re missing the bigger point. I favor a system that takes into account the principles of risk, reward and responsibility, whether it is in military service or the business world. Do you really think the draft would affect enough people to be a gigantic social program to mold citizens when it competes against entitlement programs that are out of control? I think voters should be of an age/maturity to reasonably know the effects of what they vote for. For instance, look at the recent tax increases that were to affect only those with incomes in excess of $250,000. This proposal sounded good on the surface and enjoyed widespread support among those who did not think it would affect them. Now we are dealing with reality, and many of those who supported it are now being hit with tax increases proportionately higher than the increases for the high income wage earner that was to carry the load. Had they thought they were at risk, they would have looked beyond the sound bite and given the proposal a more serious review, perhaps finding that they, not the proposed target, were to bear the burden of the tax increase.
