The 'survivalist killer' who allegedly gunned down a bus driver before taking a boy hostage in an underground bunker is now dead as the dramatic ordeal has ended after seven days.
The five-year-old boy hostage, known only as Ethan, was taken away from the scene and is believed to be in fine condition.
Multiple news outlets have reported that the gunman, 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes, is deceased, but the cause of his death was not immediately known.

The way it should be. According to news conference, he was seen holding a gun and LEO's entered, rescued the boy and said Dykes was deceased!
Several loud booms were heard, and not long after an ambulance drove away, presumably taking the boy for a medical checkup.
My first thought was concussion grenades, and I see that one of the reporters speculates the same.

As well as possible.. that kid is going to be traumatized, maybe for life (I hope not — little kids are pretty resilient).

An early news story was that he boarded the school bus, demanded the driver hand over two (6-8year old?) boys. When the driver refused he shot the driver and grabbed this boy. Sounded pretty random.

As an aside. Appears to make hiding in bunkers as a prep plan a waste of time and money. Didn't work in the Pacific in WW II, didn't work recently in Oregon or Washington (can't remember which) didn't work here, and safe rooms were proven to be a bust in Waco TX. What is an honest prepper to do?

Indeed. It looks like one needs to ask an additional question: “who are you trying to be safe from, regular criminals, or the federal government?”
I recall a story from a couple of years ago that some “spam king” was hiding in a safe room when they came to get him; they took turns with a chainsaw to the door.
Hope the kid doesn't develop PTSD. If he does, he may never be allowed the means to protect himself for the rest of his life.

No question that this will have been a traumatic experience for the kid. But I would be hopeful that, as long as he has a decent and loving family to go back to, he will get over it.
He’ll remember it all his life. But as long as there is no connection to the people he lives with in everyday life—his family, his teachers, and so forth—he should find strength and reassurance there.
In other words, this experience would gradually be seen as something separate and different from his normal life, so hopefully the damage to his confidence will gradually fade away.
Church would help, too. Some sense that there is good and evil in the world, but that evil will not prevail, unless you give in to it and let it.

I think all your points are right on. He is young enough to bounce back, with the right support.
Don't insult this web site by taking the side of this nutcase. Blaming this kidnapping and murder on liberals is the sort of pathetic victimization that liberals employ. This sick SOB is no longer breathing which is how we all knew this was going to end. The FBI appears to have handled this one well.
