A former Boy Scout leader has been charged with sodomizing a boy in his troop who was under the age of 13.
The abuse took place in 2005, according to court documents, but the victim, now an adult, waited several years before coming forward, reported WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, Va.
The BSA’s Stonewall Jackson Area Council released a prepared statement after the arrest.
“The abuse of anyone, especially a child, is intolerable and our thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who may be a victim of this type of behavior,” the statement said. ‘The behavior included in these allegations runs counter to everything for which the Boy Scouts of America stands.”
The BSA’s national executive board is expected to vote tomorrow on a proposal that would allow local Scouting organizations to form their own membership rules regarding homosexuals. WND reported yesterday that many Scout leaders, from the national organization to the troop level, have said they will resign if the proposal passes.
Steve Elwart, a 30-year veteran of Scouting, who once served as an area overseer of the youth protection program in the Scouts’ Southern Region, told WND the organization, in response to abuse, has developed a model system to protect Scouts.
Leaders, for example, are no longer allowed to meet alone with a Scout.
For that reason, unlike many, his primary concern is not that pedophiles will infiltrate the organization if the policy is changed.
Calling that issue a “red herring,” his concern is more fundamental.
“Homosexuality is not a value I want to see imparted on my children,” he said. “And a lot of parents feel the same way, that homosexuality is not OK.”

When I was in girl scouts the leaders were almost all married women with children who were also brownies and scouts. None of them were childless.

I was a troop committee chairman for 16 years.We had leaders come and want to join the leadership. Some times they would be retired and looking for a place to serve. Some stayed a while but left in two years or so as they settled into there volunteer jobs. Some took it seriously and are still around after several years.
In at least two cases, young men came to work in our town and told us about their scouting record eleswhere. It was bogus. BSA referred to them as travelers. They move around looking for a place to find boys. They were not encouraged or given responsibility.
Now days, in addition to the extensive background check, BSA has very extensive Youth Protection Training that must be renewed every two years.
In small troops the entry is easier because the Scoutmaster is in need of help. In larger better managed troops, it is harder.
The solution is to make the soddomizer wish he were no longer alive.

Gay males want to feel “normal” even though they KNOW in their hearts that they are not. Being a Scout leader allows them to feel like society accepts them and that they are normal, allowing them to deceive themselves into thinking that this means that God must accept them, too.

As a former Cubmaster and Scouting parent, I read with great dismay the letter on your website regarding the proposed change in the policy regarding sexual orientation. This proposed policy claims that Scouting has always been concerned about doing what is best for the young people that you serve. Add my voice to the list of those who will surely tell you in the coming days that a change in this policy will NOT serve those children well.
Your proposal states that “there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation.” This is false. Currently, the national policy disallows homosexual leaders and members. If you remove the policy, you are in force and effect ALLOWING homosexual leaders and members to participate, so whether the policy is written or not, Scouting will have implemented a policy that reverses course and allows what was previously disallowed.
The culture we live in is groaning with changes, and most of them are not good changes. Our kids are exposed to more sex and violence and swearing and examples of public figures who engage in dishonesty and corruption than at any time in our history, and with the ubiquity of cable television and 24 hour news and entertainment channels, the exposure is constant and nearly inescapable. As Scouting parents, we tell our children that “right” and “wrong” aren’t just words, but concepts that have meaning, and that they have to stand against the tide of change in the world. For over a hundred years, Scouting has been a constant that we could point to. When news of the so-called “controversial” policy would come on television, it always offered an opportunity for parents to answer questions that would be asked, or to ask some questions of our own and offer explanations about why Scouting’s stand in this area is important. For many kids who have non-religious parents, the stand by the Boy Scouts was the ONLY opportunity they might ever have to hear that there were reasons why allowing homosexuals in Scouting was not a good idea. By changing policy, you will be removing that potential for our kids to learn a positive message, and you will, instead, be telling them that in the face of withering criticism from politicians and the pop culture, EVEN SCOUTING will bend with the wind and do what’s popular instead of what’s right. You will, in effect, be endorsing homosexuality as an organization.
Your proposal also states that “BSA members and parents would be able to choose a local unit that best meets the needs of their families.” Will there be an official list available detailing which local organizations allow gay members and leaders? If not, then you’ll be doing a disservice to those who want to continue in Scouting without those influences, and what happens the first time that a local organization that doesn’t want to allow homosexuals is challenged by a family that wants in anyway? If you do provide such a list, however, then you will in fact be endorsing “homosexual-friendly” units, which would clearly mean that Scouting will have become a “homosexual friendly” organization. Again, you can’t claim to not have a national policy, when the lack of a national policy that once existed leads to proliferation and official sanctioning of something that the policy previously banned.
Change this policy at your peril. Doing so will be the first horn sounded on the march towards the death of Scouting as we know it.
And to think the scouts seriously - SERIOUSLY - considered opening up the scouts to gays.
All I can say is that marshmallows wouldn’t be the only thing skewered on the camping trip if Captain Bugger is running the show.

It is quite simple. If you need a gallon of milk, do you go to a paint store? Of course not... you go somewhere where there is milk. Same thing with cub scouts/boy scouts. That is where the little boys are. What is tremendously sad to me is I know some women who have put their sons into scouts for the simple reason that Dad is either deceased/divorced... and Dad not involved. That little boy is then easy pickings... he normally wants to be included/appreciated by a father figure of sorts. So sad that this is happening....
SO - the most logical and moral answer to this - allow homosexuals to be scout leaders...
