MEXICO CITY——Mexican authorities are searching for a gang of hooded gunmen who raped six Spanish tourists in Acapulco, as security at the once-glitzy Pacific beach resort continues to deteriorate.

Five armed, masked men burst into a rented bungalow on the outskirts of the city early Monday, held a group of Spanish tourists at gunpoint, tied up the men and raped the women, according to Acapulco mayor Luis Walton. The attackers also took cash, mobile telephones and credit cards from the victims, who are now under the protection of Mexican authorities.

...

Acapulco, which attracted global leaders and Hollywood celebrities in the 1950s, has become a major battleground of rival gangs seeking control of key Pacific coast drug routes. The beach resort now has one of the worst homicide rates in the world at 128 per 100,000 people, according to Mexican crime watchdog group Seguridad, Justicia y Paz, which cited government crime figures.

Mexico is like an IQ test — the smart folks pass the test by not going there.

You couldn’t convince me to go to Mexico for any reason. There is no such thing as a safe place in Mexico.

I used to go there every winter...what a tragedy that they’e lost their tourists. So many needy depended on us buying their wares. And not to mention it was a lot of fun with great weather.

It’s sad because Mexico is a very pretty country. The Acapulco/Ixtapa area is exceptionally beautiful.

That's a scary thought.... I would never, ever, ever go to Mexico. I know this happened in Acapulco, but I hear the Yucatan is deteriorating badly, too. Plenty to see and do here in my own country.

I quite agree. Mexico is a beautiful country and there’s nothing we can do to help the peaceful Mexicans.

Not all that long ago a coworker went to (I think it was) Cancun with her husband, and whereas I was both concerned and a little horrified, they both got back in one piece, and I was very much relieved. Thanks Pan_Yan.

Elvis and the Colonel had a lot of fun there, though!

(The mystery remains how the Colonel managed to return being an illegal immigrant.)

Mexico has a virtual ban on citizens owning guns.

So these crimes can not happen.

I’m sorry I’m so late, I was trying to arrived before the received wisdom about Meheeko being a” beautiful place”. No shiite, Sherlock! So was Germany in 1942.

Is it worse than Chicago?

Perhaps the masked gang of six can get on the fast track to U.S. citizenship.

My drywall guy is from a small town in the middle of drug cartel territory. He went home for a 2 week visit and had to pay a $500 “tax” just to have free passage through the town. I asked him what would have happened if he didn’t pay he said they would have killed him and his family.

My husband and I vacationed in Puerto Vallarta every year for three or four years when we were courting and after we got married.

We noticed a definite change in the attitude of the people there around 1982 or so, and we stopped going. I wouldn’t go to Mexico now on a dare.

I have some very fond memories of Ixtapa. We were stationed at the Embassy in Mexico City but I wouldn’t go anywhere south of San Antonio for the foreseeable future. Anywhere!
