Iran Shows Decoded Video from Captured American Drone
Gizmodo ^ | Feb 6, 2013 | Sam Biddle

Posted on 02/06/2013 6:59:25 PM PST by James C. Bennett

If this is what it looks like, this is bad for everyone who isn't Iran: after claiming the capture of a downed, super-advanced American drone in 2011, we now have what looks like decoded video straight from its brain.

The video, which The Aviationist's David Cenciotti says is indeed shot "from the FLIR turret of the RQ-170" Sentinel drone, clearly shows Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan—a vital limb of the American military presence in the region. Fears over the drone's capture had been tempered by the fact that any onboard data would either be damaged or encrypted beyond the point of salvage. Clearly that's not the case, as the video above is as crisp as anything you'd see straight out of the Pentagon.

There's the possibility that the video is fake, sure. But the locale depicted looks exactly like KAF, which would be impossible for Iran to access itself. This doesn't mean the Iranian intelligence apparatus has access to any UAV missions the US is running now, but if another drone were to go down in the future—highly probable—this means its visual cargo is in danger. There's also no telling what else was onboard the Sentinel Iran still has onboard. [The Aviationist]

From the comments at the GIZMODO link:

“Did anyone consider that this is probably fake? Seriously, if you were Iran, and you had the ability to decryption top secret US encryption, would you go announce to the world that you could? All that would do would be to prompt your enemy to change the way they do things, and you would lose your ability to see their data.”

Knowing the douche, O had it unscrambled/dencoded before it left the tarmac to it’s low and slow flying duck shoot.

He sure as hell hasn’t done squat to hinder Iran from joining the atomic club

Why would the drone be filming Kandahar?

I had heard, long ago, that the video signal from our drones was not encrypted. Control and telemetry: yes, but not the video.

Current encryption methods are VERY hard to crack unless you actually are given the key.

It is cobbled together footage from other sources. They made a glitch in video editing that gives it away. They make the video cut just a second to late, and it gives you a brief gimps of the next video clip on the source they was taking it from. At 1.33, you see a quick glimpse of a building right when it explodes from a missile strike.

The sentinel drone does not carry weapons.

It is operational footage from armed drone missions.

Looking at that video and comparing it to what Nova showed on its documentary on Drones, I would say it was footage from technology that is inferior to what is possible now. Now we have technology that will pinpoint one person in an entire city and back-track him back to the house he came out of 8 hours before. So, let’s say an IED blows up one of our soldiers. A drone will capture the IED blowing up, back-track to the time the IED was planted and follow the person who planted the IED back in time to the house they came from. Imagine an entire city under surveillance from 5,000 feet with definition of one foot. Such files will go for weeks on end.

Resolution of one foot?

Google Earth (shot from space) already clearly shows the <1/4” wires on the power line crossing my front yard...

"Resolution of one foot?

My memory was wrong. From the Nova documentary, Rise of the Drones, the resolution from 17,500 feet was six inches. It showed a man on the ground, waving his arms and a small bird in flight. The system, called ARGUS-IS, is very powerful; able to store one million tera bites/day with a resolution of 1.8 billion pixtels. You can read more about its capabilities here (very interesting):

The 1.8 gigapixel ARGUS-IS
