Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley wants state lawmakers to consider passing legislation that would require residents to obtain a license before purchasing a handgun. Such a law would be an impediment to a constitutional guarantee for which there is no such requirement.
I find it interesting that liberals attack the requirement that a person needs to show identification in order to vote, but they will put multiple restrictions on people who have a right to keep and bear arms as set down in the Constitution.
Unlike the Second Amendment, there is no absolute right to vote. Consider the 26th Amendment that was added to the Constitution in 1971 mainly in reaction to the draft and the Vietnam War. Draftees argued that if they were old enough to be drafted to fight and die for their country at 18 years of age, then they should have a right to vote for the people who start the wars. Section 1 of the Amendment reads:
The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.
Notice that the 26th Amendment says that being 18 is not enough. An 18-year-old must be a citizen of the United States. Not just any 18-year-old can vote. In order to get around liberal insistence that voters should not have to show identification in order to vote, state officials check for the age of the voter. Once this is established, the potential voter will have to show proof of citizenship. Age and citizenship go together. The 26th Amendment, unlike the 2nd Amendment includes an age and citizenship requirement.
The 2nd Amendment guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Nothing is said about identifying who these people are or their age. Unlike voting, you do not have to prove youre a citizen or are of a certain age in order to own a gun.
Lets apply Gov. OMalleys call for state lawmakers to pass legislation that would require residents to obtain a license before purchasing a handgun. What would happen if he and other governors passed laws that would require people who engage in religious practices to get a license? There was a time when ministers were required to register with the State. An example of this is the 1662 Act of Uniformity in Great Britain. In 1658, John Bunyan (16281688), author of Pilgrims Progress, was arrested for preaching without a license.
Maybe its time that newspapers secure a license before they can comment on the news. Heaven knows there is been many examples of poor journalism and outright lies published by the press.
Any time a person wants to engage in public speech, a license would have to be obtained from government officials. If you wanted to petition the government for a redress of grievances, a guarantee of the First Amendment, you would have to get a license from the governmental entity that you wanted to petition to air your grievances.
Some might say that we already have some of these restrictions. If thats true, then lets not give into any more restrictions on our God-given and constitutional freedoms.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Mark my words, we will all be hearing from O’Malice in the coming years.
He shadows Obeyme and is ‘the best Baltimore has to offer’.
First Amendment Reform... do you have your thinking license yet? We can’t let all those crazies spout unapproved ideas in public, after all and it’s not fair for all those all those people who can’t think for themselves for everyone else to have the freedom to think, so this has to happen. //sarcasm
For those who unfortunately are unable to read, or score poorly in reading comprehension, please take note of the following words...
SHALL. NOT. BE. INFRINGED.
I understand that today’s public school education is a bit lacking. If you require assistance interpreting those words, please feel free to consult someone fluent in ENGLISH. (Which in itself, I understand, my be problematic.)
note to Gov. of Maryland...
and how much will this cost???
more bucks in state coffers?
WHAT DOES IT MATTER!!!
>> He ... is the best Baltimore has to offer.
That’s pretty sad, superbowl win or no.
Note to self: scratch “visit Baltimore” off of bucket list. :-)
Next you will be required to wear a yellow G on your chest for Gunowner and submit to mandatory inspections.
“The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed and that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of press.” Thomas Jefferson
My assault rifle is not illegal ... its undocumented.
How much will it cost?
In Massachusetts, a “License to Carry” costs $100 for a six-year renewal. And without the LTC, you cannot own a handgun. Period. (Criminals excepted, of course.)
>> Next you will be required to wear a yellow G on your chest for Gunowner and submit to mandatory inspections.
There’s just one, small (.22 to .50) problem with that concept...
Think “muzzle bore”.
“Yeah, sure, sew that yellow “G” right HERE, byotch.”
Having “lived” in THE Freak state...and escaped last year...I can assure all that omally is the pentultimate pin-head asshat moonbat loser. One can only hope he is jailed soon.
This sort of thing is why I am now a Virginian. Until the libtards in the DC suburbs manage to f**k up the Commonwealth the way they already have the Peoples Democratic State of Maryland, I am happy to live in a “Shall Issue” state.
~Nobody~ goes to Balto unless they have to.
The irony of Maryland’s mottoe being “The Free State” is simply obscene given the fascist cabal in Annapolis. As a soon-to-be-former Maryland resident, there is simply no scheme too stalinist for O’Malley and his cronies.
My prediction for 2016 is that if the vapid grifter does indeed leave office — by no means a certainty — the three front runners for the nomination will be unrepentant Leninist governors: O’Malley, Coumo, and Patrick. My money is on Patrick at the top of the ticket with the grifter’s blessing, as the retiring incumbent will be at that time the most popular president in the history of the nation, which is a sorrowful evaluation of the nation.
Am still really steamed Maryland is now in the Big Ten.
But looking at all those other purple states, not much too much room to complain.
Go ahead merryland, enact your crazy gun control laws. It’ll be the equivalent of declaring open season on the residents of maryland. Maybe some obscene violence and active looting will change their minds. After all, if one were a criminal, knowing the state government was running interference for you, one would conclude the you would be ripe for plundering and pillaging.
