Potential showdown on immigration reform likely to be on how safe is Southwest border, who decides
The effort in Washington to pass immigration reform is headed for a potential showdown over border security with the Senate and White House plans putting different emphasis on the issue, and Democrats and Republicans appearing to disagree over the extent of the problem.
The likely conflict was highlighted earlier this week when Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano declared U.S. borders secure and said Republicans have a flawed argument about border security needing to precede comprehensive immigration reform.
"I believe the border is secure, Napolitano said Monday in San Diego, during a three-day swing of the Southwest border. I believe the border's a safe border (but) that's not to say everything is 100 percent."
She said the Republicans have failed to recognize yearly improvements in contraband seizures and the number of people caught trying to cross the border illegal.
They also think border security is unrelated to interior immigration enforcement such as visa tracking and employment verification and the pathway to citizenship for an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants now living in the United States, Napolitano also said.
While the plan by President Obama, who has made immigration reform a second-term priority, includes tighter border security, the plan by a bipartisan Senate panel is contingent on securing the borders.

Neither one gives a fig about how this affects the future of the U.S. They are like two vultures cawing at each other over a dying corpse - they only care what they get out of it.
You’re right, they’re all after something whether it be votes, cheap labor, etc and with our unemployment every illegal should be deported.
The democrats will try to use an official lie and deem it secure. Otherwise, they are cagey enough to realize that if
they admit the border is not secure, and that they can indeed secure it, then it begs the question as to why it was not secured decades ago, before the millions flooded in to cause the problem.
It will be a big deal who decides and how they decide if the border is secure. The area of the border where I live has fewer illegal crossers than in past years going strictly by numbers. The reality is that fewer illegals are crossing here just to go to work, the number of smugglers seems to have grown if anything and I believe they are far more dangerous than in the past. In years past it was very unusual for smugglers that were caught to be armed and now it is unusual if they are not heavily armed.
Illegal traffic is down in my area but the danger level is higher in my opinion. Other areas may or may not have a decrease in illegal traffic, so it will be hard to determine and I can imagine a lot of games will be played with numbers to show the border being secure when it likely won’t be.
Another issue is every time any type of amnesty is even discussed more illegals flood in hoping for the amnesty.
Yep, she has to be brilliant because Obummer picked her...Gag:)
Incompetanto thought the border was secure when she was Gov of AZ and the minutemen were patrolling because too many illegals were getting across.
Thanks for an on the spot assessment.
The armed smugglers have to be a huge threat to anyone coming in contact with them. The only life they value is their own and from the murders in Mexico in the last few years it would seem a person would be taking an awful chance getting away from populated areas.
Thanks jazusamo.

When Napolitano talks about illegal aliens amnesty, she never talks about the narcotrafficantes in their midst. The drugs and trade are brought by the illegals into our midst, along with the violence and criminal behavior that goes along with the trade. They ignore the crime in Washington. That’s because they benefit from it financially. Here in Houston, the police have been corrupted, with some employed to escort the big drug shipments safely through the city and onward to northern destinations. It is big money, and the cartel guys shoot each other up around here all the time. Plus they shake down legal immigrants with protection racket. My yard man in Houston is from Mexico: he pays protection to the Zetas so they leave his family alone down there.
They have the Border Patrol stop arresting and deporting and call this a ‘reduction’ in illegal immigrants coming over the border. Isn’t it great to be able to create your own statistics?
Quit dicking around lady. Build the fence and stop the avenues for illegal’s to enter the country. How many million more have to come her before it’s too many. To say nothing about the eroding of our American way of life. Quit making this an issue of voters. The Dems will get the vast majority and the GOP only a few. So the only strategy is to lock out those who shouldn’t be coming her illegally. And don’t get me started on the terrorist eventuality. It’s going to happen. Then who will say this stupid amnesty thing was a good idea.
No giving illegals the vote regardless.
I have lived on the border for over 30 years and I feel more concern than before for sure. I sure don’t feel safer as many politicians want everyone to believe.
That’s odd. Just three months ago the State Dept was warning Americans to stay from certain danger zones in the US bordering Mexico.
