Campaign To Get Orson Scott Card Fired From Superman Begins

Posted on February 9, 2013 by Rich Johnston

What if Jack Chick wrote Superman? Courtesy of Kat Rocha.

So, yesterday I wrote an article in response to requests I’d had to promote an organised campaign to boycott DC, Superman and to get Orson Scott Card fired off the Superman Adventures book for being an anti-gay marriage activist and holding virulent homphobic views.

Instead I wrote a piece taking issue with that concept. That I found the idea of campaigning to get a writer fired because you disagreed with his beliefs, however abhorrent, problematic.Some agreed;

[*Tweets*]

Plenty didn’t.

[*Tweets*]

And some… well…

[*Tweets*]

One of the senders of the original request thanked me for raising the topic, even though I disagreed with their aim, as it seemed to them that other news sites were choosing just to ignore the issue, and the Bleeding Cool article had got people talking. A number of gay-themed sites had picked up on the story it was likely to get wider play.

It had got me thinking as well. Some of the debaters chose to frame issue of free speech around the US Constitution, that there a difference between private speech and a government law banning speech, and that boycotts themselves are also free speech. And that no boycott, not even say the One Million Moms boycott against the Archie same sex wedding issue, was against free speech. Which was a viewpoint I hadn’t even considered.

I don’t have the same background regarding free speech and I don’t see the lines so divided between public and private. And I do see a boycott against what as I see as free speech reducing rather then increasing free speech. But that, as has been pointed out (repeatedly) may be down to my own ignorance.

The campaign has begun now with this petition on AllOut.org, stating to DC Comics;

By hiring Orson Scott Card despite his anti-gay efforts you are giving him a new platform and supporting his hate.

Make sure your brand stands for equality and drop Orson Scott Card now.

I wonder how the other DC comics creators will be reacting to the issue at the creative conference tomorrow?

Conservatives should retaliate accordingly while support our own.

I’ve noticed more and more lately that the left has been picking out its targets one by one and going all out on boycotts and pressure.

They utilize all of its social media and celebrities and pressure to pick off companies and individuals one at a time.

It seems to be very effective and the right should do the same rather than its usual tactic of whining and listing impossible long lists of companies to boycott.

Focus on one mid size company. Marshall all your forces, all the conservatives on social media, all the conservative talking heads, and cripple one...just one...left leaning business. Protest in front, refuse to use, put a hurt on them till they stop funding planned parenthood or supporting the homosexual agenda.

Going all out on impossible long lists of giants like Intel McDonalds Ford etc etc etc all at once wins nothing.

Same people that screeched about McCarthyism and the hollyweird blacklist in the 50s are doing this.

This is an honest and maybe stupid question. How close do organized boycotts come to being a form of racketeering?

I have no interest in OSC's writing but I've never had much appreciation for these tactics.

I do not remember a single liberal boycott that has worked (I can point to several Conservative ones that have).

For the record, an attempt at a boycott is exercise of free speech. You can counter it using the same techniques (think Chik-Fil-et) but it certainly isn’t any form of actionable “suppression”

The problem is when you LEGALLY can’t express “unallowable” (un-PC) thoughts (which has been the trend for the last 30+ years) — the terms “inciting” and “harassing” are thrown about and used in legal prosecution.

“The activists are going after opponents in all walks of life. “

Because they are tolerant, and when they encounter intolerant people, they shun them, punish them, and try to get them unemployed.

If Superman were gay, there'd have been a fictional series of mysterious beheadings.

“Because they are tolerant, and when they encounter intolerant people, they shun them, punish them, and try to get them unemployed.”

Sarcasm, I assume.

As I’m sure you understand completely, when the leftards accuse someone of “intolerance,” all they mean is that said someone doesn’t tolerate something *they* think should be tolerated.

If they themselves refuse to tolerate something, such as sodomites being barred from supervision of children, why, that’s not intolerance. That’s only opposition to the bigotry of others.

It’s enough to knock a buzzard off a wagonload of corpses.

I just checked and this one has 492 dimwits signed up and the goal is 5,000. Even if they meet their goal they won't have a drop in the bucket of "makes a difference".

Do you conside the Disneyworld boycott a success? How do you measure success? It's still standing near Orlando, FL, as far as I know.

In 1996, the American Family Association launched a boycott against Walt Disney Company (which the Southern Baptist Convention joined) when it began giving benefits to same-sex employees in domestic partnerships. The AFA claimed CEO Michael Eisner "was involved in a media group that actively promoted the homosexual agenda" and was pushing the "gay agenda". The AFA and SBC ended the 9-year boycott in spring 2005 after Eisner left the company.

>>Do you conside the Disneyworld boycott a success? How do you measure success? It’s still standing near Orlando, FL, as far as I know.<<

True, very few boycotts work, but here are some successes:

* Whoopie Goldburg removed as SlimFast spokesperson
* Hit piece on Reagan taken off of CBS and sent to the hinterlands of SHO
* Chik-fil-A “buycott” results in it doing better than before

I didn’t even know about the AFA boycott and frankly the fact that Disney decided to cater to a clientele doesn’t bug me unless and until they shove it down my throat (Disney parks are amazingly old school and I see no overt signs of a homosexual agenda).

If Disney were to attempt to make a homosexual princess movie we would most likely band together against the MOVIE, not necessarily Disney.
