Lansing gun buyback brings in more than 100 guns, draws protests

LANSING, MI — The Lansing Police Department's second gun buyback program earned more than 100 guns Saturday, an achievement officers called "a great success."

About 128 guns were purchased from the official sale, Lansing Police Department public information officer Robert Merritt said. He estimated most of the guns collected at Saturday's sale, held at Lansing's Tabernacle of David church, were hand guns. Several long guns and two assault weapons were also collected.

The city's first gun buyback returned about 100 firearms and was held in August after Lansing Eastern High School student LaVon Wilson, 16, was killed in a July shooting. At that buyback, 60 long guns and 40 hand guns were purchansed.

Saturday's effort was in part funded by a $10,000 donation to Lansing police from Sparrow Health System, McLaren Health Care and the Michigan Health & Hospital Association.

Participants earned a $50 Meijer grocery gift card for every operable long gun, a $100 gift card for each operable handgun and a $150 gift card for each operable assault weapon. Each seller was limited to two guns.

....

Brothers Nicholas and Paul Hampton, both of Detroit, said they and others buying guns were attempting to offer a "fair price" to gun owners for their more expensive pieces.

"We're collectors — we enjoy the beauty and history of guns," Nicholas Hampton said. "(The police department) is giving pennies for some of these guns, they're worth more cash than a gift card."

Paul Hampton added that pushing for greater gun control was not the answer to solving gun crime and said responsible gun owners should not feel ashamed for carrying and operating legal weapons.

The brothers estimated their group purchased at least 15 guns Saturday.

The buyback returned firearms? That implies they belonged to the guv in the first place. Sad.

The more “Good Guys” give up their guns, the greater the ratio of “Bad Guy” to “Good Guy” guns increases.

Maybe Contempt of Congress Holder can sell off some of his Fast and Furious guns?

What the hell do they mean, "...ABOUT 128 guns...."?

Were people turning in pieces of guns or what?

I will be conducting a gun buy back program next Saturday. Contact me by FRmail for time and location. The program is limited to evil assault weapons. I will be paying $50 for AR-15s and $75 for AR-10s. (Please, no pink or Hello Kitty weapons.) All weapons must be in operable condition. Federal, Pennsylvania and local laws do not currently require background checks for long arms. This is a completely legal transaction where I live. I am doing this gun buyback program out of the goodness my heart and using my own money to finance the program.

My daughter is a Sheriff Deputy in Texas and the guns they confiscate they sell at auction each year. That’s the difference between Yankee’s and the South. They buy and destroy guns, we take them from bad guys and sell them to good guys.

Bingo...this is EXACTLY my first thought. How many were stolen. And the 2nd thought was, I wonder if now the murder index will go down to get 100 guns off the street. For certain there will be 100 people who won’t be able to defend themselves from the thugs. Let’s all keep learnin’ here now.

Got to leave some wiggle room so the cops can take a few to use for planting on dead perps when necessary to cover up bad shoots...

Back in 1968 the MSM had so frightened people that they were voluntarily giving up their guns to the police to be destroyed.

Saw VIVA ZAPATA last night. Interesting that in the movie the poor were convinced to turn in their guns.
