The gentle pace of life on the campus of Ashley Hall, South Carolinas only all-girls preparatory school, appeared to be back on Friday. Parents lined up in the shade of the live oaks to pick up their children. A luncheon for alumnae of the school, which was founded in 1909, went on as planned.
Still, police officers patrolled the iron fence that surrounds the school and teachers remained on edge, trying to grasp how a woman with a public history of mental illness had managed to buy a gun a week earlier and amazed that the gun, when pointed at administrators who confronted her in front of the school on Monday, did not fire.
Alice Boland, 28, who was charged in 2005 with threatening to assassinate President George W. Bush and members of Congress as she waited in line at U.S. Customs, is again charged with plotting a violent attack. On Monday, after pacing in front of the school gates during car pool and visibly swinging a gun, she tried to shoot two faculty members: the director of the high school, Mary Schweers, and an English teacher, Chris Hughes.
The police charged Ms. Boland with attempted murder and unlawful carrying of a firearm. The only thing that stopped her, they said, was that she did not realize the gun was locked.
We were very fortunate she did not know how to take the lock off, or this could have been a tragedy, said Earl Woodham, a spokesman in Charlotte for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

They decided she wasn’t nuts because she wanted to kill Pres. Bush. Chris Matthews fronted the money for her purchase.
Beginning to see a pattern here? Disturbed leftist wants to be famous and on TV and gets to make gun owners look bad at the same time. It’s a twofer...
There's a site that says he told the review board that he went to the movies.....BUT....the FBI said he really went to the library and read articles about the Reagan hit.
I'd say review boards are stuck on stupid.
Hinkley belongs in jail/hospital/whatever for LIFE with absolutely no life on the outside...period.
“Gun buyers nationwide are required to disclose mental illnesses only if they have been committed to an institution or found mentally defective by a judge, he said.”
Does this requirement remotely make ANY sense at all?
Do you want the requirement tightened or eliminated?
I bet the noob likes “common sense” gun control.
Sheesh! Who does she think she is, Squeaky Fromme?
The fact that it is voluntary is nonsensical and should be eliminated as a requirement...it’s just a butt-covering law.
I am totally against the “declared mentally defective” restriction on a person’s 2nd Amendment rights..there is WAY too much potential for abuse and the potential confiscation of guns...saw a story where a recent veteran had his guns taken from him...very scary..
Here’s the pattern I’m seeing: all of a sudden in February, saying that nationally-covered gun atrocities are happening one right after the other is understating the fullness of the timeline.
Sniper Chris Kyle was killed on February 2, that Dykes guy got splattered all over the walls in his hole in the ground in Alabama on Monday Feb 4, and the Dorner/LAPD case is the new front-page news on Wednesday Feb 6.
None of these stories are simply time-fillers for the so-called “24/7 news cycle” — these are all plots right out of movies and spy novels.
Lol, there’s no such thing as a “Common Sense” gun law...they are ALL restrictions on a fundamental Constitutional right...
We were very fortunate she did not know how to take the lock off, or this could have been a tragedy..."
Does anyone know what this means? Did the gun have a trigger lock installed on it? Wouldn't she have noticed that before she tried to shoot these people? Are they trying to say that she did not know how to take the safety off?
Anyone who can not be trusted to own and carry a weapon should not be running around loose. End of discussion.
Who turned her loose in 2005?
Who gets to decide? Obama? Pelosi? Chuckie Shumer?
Once you decide someone else gets to pick and choose, it’s no longer a right, but a privilege..
