Menendez Backed Donor on Port Security Plan (intervened in US plan to curb drug imports)
NY TIMES ^ | 2/11/13 | Eric Lipton, Washington, William K. Rashbaum, NY, w/ Frances Robles

Sen Robert Menendez (D-NJ) sought to discourage any plan by the US govt to donate port security equipment to the Dominican Republic, citing concern that the advanced screening gear might undermine efforts by a private company — run by a major campaign contributor and friend of his — to do the work.

Menendez's intervention w/ Homeland Security came last month shortly after Dr. Salomon E. Melgen, Miami Florida, was to meet with a senior State Dept official, accompanied by Pedro Pablo Permuy, a former aide to Mr. Menendez, in a related push to protect the port security contract, said to be worth as much as $500 million over 20 years.

Absolutely shocking .... that the NY Times is covering this. Is this a signal for other government media outlets to chime in, and for Senator Menendez to “pursue other opportunities” under the bus before he is thrown?

Sen Robert “Pedobear” Menendez (D-NJ).

How do the people of New Jersey feel about reelecting a pedophile?

Why isn’t Lautenberg in jail or the funny farm? I just passed his lousy, empty, ugly Secaucus rail depot with the usual 3 people getting on. This state is a sewer.

One might wonder if Melgen was involved in drug running.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill) said on Meet The Press Sunday that embattled Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) should keep his chairmanship of the Foreign Relations Committee despite an investigation into his dealings with a top donor.

Durbin said: "Sen. Menendez has given us an assurance that there is no substance to these charges," the Democratic senator from Illinois said." "It's being looked at by the Ethics Committee. Of course, I can't comment beyond that."

The Senate Ethics Committee is looking into Menendez's interaction with Salomon Melgen, a Florida eye surgeon who has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Menendez and other Democrats. more at politico.com ...

Menendez and Durbin were up all night writing the statement with just the right tonal nuances to warm the citizenry's hearts.

And when they finished, Durbin said to Menendez, "Now what's in it for me?"

Menendez replied, "If I keep the chairmanship, you get a piece of the Dominican port security action, a cut of all contraband transported to the US in DR cargo, a hacienda in the DR, and as many little girls as you can diddle when Congress recesses."

Oh please-—give the old guy a break.

Frank’s too busy worrying that his supply of Depends and jars of baby food might run out while he’s napping and bulking up on strained bananas.

Several years ago, tipsy after having had dinner and a b’way show, I saw Lautenberg on the streets of NYC (where he is rumored to live - not NJ). I heckled him telling him to go home!

When you saw Lautenberg in NY-—was he on a walker-—or on a motorized hospital gurney?
