The Nahal Brigade is preparing for its deployment along the northern border – currently, one of the most tense borders – where it will be faced with a disintegrating Syria, and a Hizbullah that growing stronger.

The commander of the green unit, Colonel Yehuda Fuchs, said it is clear that if the IDF takes action against these threats, his soldiers will be on the front line. "We are psychologically ready for battle in Lebanon," he said.

There are a lot of rumours about a new invasion of Lebanon - I find it unlikely. However, this article does have a named source, which makes it more significant.

Israel doesn’t go to war except as a last resort. Once they’ve got sufficient stock of bunkerbusters to blow up the Hizzie missile stockpiles while they’re still underground, they’ll be ready for that particular one. And while Assad remains alive and in control of what’s left of his father’s regime, there’s some breathing space. Whatever regime arises in Syria will not have what it takes to start a war with Israel, and Israel will not waste a lot of time, effort, and its dearest blood destroying Hizbollah, they will work fast. Thanks BlackVeil.

Could it be . . and I know this is a stretch, but could it be that Israel is actually helping Assad? By entering Lebanon, naturally, they will draw the "rebels" from Syria into a killing field in Lebanon. What self respecting islamist wouldn't want to go get him some Jooooouuusss as opposed to fighting Arabs in Syria? I doubt a mussi could resist such an opportunity. Assad is clearly the lesser of two evils and would probably be ever so grateful to have the islamists mopped up by Israel. Assad was also notably quite in response to the Israeli bombing of the missiles in Syria too. It would be a win win situation.

just a thought

Nothing would surprise me. The border with the Golan Heights has been very quiet, and remained so for years, so that must be regarded as an advantage by Israel.

I certainly think there is a lot of secret diplomacy going on. Putin visited Israel in person last year - there would have been some sort of discussions, maybe a deal.

Turkey is the wild card in this pack. If they take over northern Syria they will become immensely powerful, and Russia can’t bear the thought. Israel might not like it, either.
