A Melbourne priest claims the extra strain placed on Pope Benedict from dealing with widespread sexual abuse within the Catholic Church may have been a factor in his resignation.
Father Max Vodola said the elderly Pope's shock exit from the role may be because he is too physically and emotionally weak to deal with the decades-old problem.
It comes as Archbishop Denis Hart leads Victorian tributes to the Pope, who he describes as gentle and loving.

who will resign over public school sex abuse?

BS
They don’t resign, they go to prison unlike Catholic clergy who flee to the conclave of pedophiles in Rome.
A quote from another article I saw today:
A quote:
Joseph Radzinger, alias Benedict XVI, formerly known as The Rottweiler from his role as attack dog for his predecessor Carol Wojtyla alias John Paul II under whose auspices he issued the Criminale Solicitacciones instruction of Pope John XXIII has resigned.
The uncovered instruction ordering the protection of pedophile sex criminal priests and nuns at the expense of not protecting the little children they were molesting and threatening the little victims with hell if they did not keep their being raped secret did not result in a RICO prosecution in the USA depite 177 out 179 American dioceses and their bishops and arch bishops being found liable for massive damages in court.
The Bush Administration squashed civil litigations against Radzinger on political grounds that as a head of state the pope is immune from any juridical or prosecutorial proceedings by International convention.
Similar efforts in the UK to have citizens arrests of Radzinger during his papal visit of 2010 were stopped by the British government, thus this gangster who orchestrated an international campaign to shield dangerous child molesters was never brought to justice for obstruction or aiding and abetting fugitives from justice. The systematic rape and sodomizing of small children by Roman Catholic clergy under the protection of the church hierarchy stemmed from Australia and New Zealand to the USA and Canada, to Great Britain, to Germany and beyond, but was found most prolific in Roman Catholic countries such as Ireland, Austria, French speaking Africa, and Brazil.
In his youth Radzinger wore a swastika and fought for Hitler, but went on as a priest and cardinal paying lip service against anti Semitic Jew hatred, yet under his papacy the Vatican has maintained an almost continual anti Israel bias.
Radzinger then went on to become the king of scandal when the endemic pedophilia of Roman Catholicism finally could no longer be hidden and suppressed despite his best efforts to do so.
Even the mafia does not allow its embers to engage in child prostitution, child pornography or pedophilia. It rather takes Radzingers Roman Catholic Church to go that low. The largest catch of kiddie porn on record, some 40,000 hours, was at the Roman Catholic seminary near Vienna.
usually its kept quiet and they get shunted to another school or district
Public school sex abuse? The remedy is to arrest those people involved and take it to court. That should be the case whether they are a teacher, administrator, priest, bishop, pastor, etc. There should be nowhere to hide.
Having said that I take the Pope at his word that he is resigning because he is ... old. The Pope was far removed from specific cases that bishops and cardinals would have handled .. or covered up. This author is just using this to take a cheap shot at the Catholic Church
Gee, TSgt— I can’t help noticing that you seem to make it your business to make an ignorant and bigoted anti-Catholic remark on each thread having anything remotely to do with the Catholic Church. Tell me: is this a full time occupation for you, or are you simply obsessively hateful?
You are a liar.
There are entire websites devoted to bad teachers who mostly all are charged and serve some time.
It is the Catholic church that has the market cornered on shunting pedophiles and the last time I checked public schools were not proclaiming to be the one universal church.
Hateful?
You sound like the homosexual lobby...
I do however hate pedophiles and those who protect them, such as Ratzinger.
Has the Catholic church even solved this problem? I seem to still be reading about incidents of priests abusing little boys. Are they still welcoming gay priests so long as they claim not to act on their homosexuality? Does the church not understand that its clergy have a special responsibility to be upstanding and moral. Having priests that are gay is a pretty terrible idea and it is difficult to understand how the church, from the Pope on down, can’t seem to figure this out.
and how many were moved around because of complaints before they were finally charged? It happened in my town.
INT- 5 Steps Pope Benedict should take in the next 2 weeks
Posted by Joelle Casteix on February 11, 2013
SNAP - Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests
By stepping down, Pope Benedict has proven hes capable of bold action. For the safety of children, in the weeks ahead, we hope hell show similar decisiveness and
—discipline at least a handful of current prelates who are concealing or who have concealed child sex crimes,
—insist that every bishop post names of the credibly accused predator priests on his website (as 30 US bishops have done: http://www.bishop-accountability.org/AtAGlance/lists.htm),
—order bishops to actively work with lawmakers to pass stronger child safety measures and reform archaic laws that shield officials who commit and conceal child sex crimes,
—turn over all church abuse and cover up records held by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to local law enforcement and
—halt the canonization of Pope John Paul, so all church employees will see that ignoring or hiding child sex crimes will lead to consequences. The time for promises and policies is over. It is time for decisive action.

Personally, I am so sick of the “Catholic sexual abuse” crap.
I am not Catholic. (disclosure)
The incidence of abuse and cover up is no different than the public at large or other church groups.
These men are not somehow special in the rate, most evidence is that church groups (Catholics included) is actually lower than the general population.
Liberals make me want to vomit......!!!!
Wishful thinking considering Ratzinger’s among them.
Pope ‘obstructed’ sex abuse inquiry

It must be a futile plea to get you guys to see in the face of overwhelming evidence that something is wrong. Every single time hard evidence is presented, you cry "Anti-catholic bashing!" You do it every single time instead of admitting the catholic church might have a problem. The popes do not resign. They just simply do not resign, no matter what. Haven't resigned for 600 years. So, why now? A more in-depth reason must be the real motivating factor behind his resignation.
and so the smears now spread by the left wing media, put out a rumour and then watch it turn into a monster before the truth gets out there
Considering how many freepers think it's cool("Not guilty"), if applied to the general population, I'd say "nobody much."
They dont resign, they go to prison unlike Catholic clergy who flee to the conclave of pedophiles in Rome.Except, "they" do not.
Passing the trash
Too often, problem teachers are allowed to leave quietly. That can mean future abuse for another student and another school district. Its a dynamic so common it has its own nicknamespassing the trash or the mobile molester.

Seems this pope wants to disappear...
I may not be a Catholic, but I recognize unsubstantiated rubbish when I read it. Who knows why he resigned? And at this late date, what difference does it make?
“TSgt wrote: “You know, the guy Ratzinger ignored...”
You mean the guy who correctly asserted a statute of limitations defense? Or are you saying that such defenses should not apply? Or is it that your rabid anti-catholicism cannot allow for such an objective issue?
What an outright lie. Obviously you have not read the document. The secrecy called for was only about the testimony given during the internal church investigation. If the priest were found guilty they were subject to the harshest penalties of the church, including excommunication. Such penalties would by their nature be public. This is the exact same standard used for the testimony given to a criminal grand jury. Outside this testimony anyone would be free to go to the civil authorities and report the crime independently. The attempt to characterize this in any other way is the most base calumny.
“Has the Catholic church even solved this problem?”
Solved? No one can “solve” the problem of evil, and wherever children are found, those who want to act with evil intent against them will find a way.
“I seem to still be reading about incidents of priests abusing little boys.”
And teachers, and scout leaders and politicians and media personalities, and boyfriends and.....
“Are they still welcoming gay priests so long as they claim not to act on their homosexuality?”
No, they forbid such ordinations.
“Does the church not understand that its clergy have a special responsibility to be upstanding and moral.”
Yep. That said, like any organization, they do their best, and sometimes find that the “bad apple” gets in, or the “good apple” goes bad.
“Having priests that are gay is a pretty terrible idea and it is difficult to understand how the church, from the Pope on down, cant seem to figure this out.”
They have. And the Catholic Church has taken many positive steps to address both the issue of ordaining queers and protecting our kids from abuse. More than, say the government schools. Study the issue and you will find no organization has done more than the Church in this area.
Johnny can you play more than one note on your guitar?
What took you so long to reply with the classic, “Don’t blame us, everyone rapes children” defense?
You are a liar.
There are entire websites devoted to bad clergy who mostly all are charged and serve some time.
It is the public schools that has the market cornered on shunting pedophiles and the last time I checked public schools were not proclaiming to be the one universal church - but they do demand universal taxation as they protect pedophiles.
Unlike you - I posted evidence. Your precious teachers get passed around just like their victims. And honest folks who study the issue know that clergy sex abuse is similar in almost all denominations. Your bigotry is on full display here. Be proudman, you are demonstrating right wing bigotry for all to see, in full living color.

Resigning like this is unprecedented. Popes have been imprisoned and murdered and don’t abandon their flock.
Well, at least we know which side you are on.
I bet you are also the president of the Jerry Sandusy fan club.
It was the evil children who seduced the priests! Poor guys!
Outrage at friar’s claims that it is often the teenage boys who seduce priests in religious sex abuse cases... and he calls Sandusky ‘a poor guy’

Balderdash!
Actually the refuting of facts and resorting to childish name calling is a liberal trait that you just illustrated.
Let me know when you can form an intellectual argument.
I comment on every kind of topic imaginable, I don’t know what you mean by ‘one note’
Wrong.
Pope St. Pontian, in 235, one of the first bishops of Rome, who was arrested and sent to the salt mines, and in order for a successor to be able to be elected in Rome, he resigned his office.
Pope Benedict IX, in the 1040s, resigned and attempted to re-acquire the papacy several times.
Pope Celestine V resigned after a shor time in the See, and Gregory XIII resigned as well.
You are a liar.
You are also becoming personally offensive.
The abuse button is getting hit.
It doesn't happen often but it has happened.
From Wikipedia: The Catholic Encyclopedia notes the historically obscure resignations of Pope Pontian[6] (230235) and Pope Marcellinus (296308), the historically postulated resignation of Pope Liberius (352366),[3] and that one (unspecified) catalogue of popes lists Pope John XVIII as resigning office in 1009 and ending his life as a monk.[7][8] The first historically unquestionable[3] Papal resignation is that of Pope Benedict IX in 1045. In order to rid the Church of the scandalous Benedict, Pope Gregory VI gave Benedict "valuable possessions"[3] to resign the papacy in his favour.[9] Gregory himself resigned in 1046 because the arrangement he had entered into with Benedict was considered simony. A well-known resignation of a Pope is that of Pope Celestine V in 1294. After only five months of pontificate, he issued a solemn decree declaring it permissible for a Pope to resign, and then did so himself. He lived two more years as a hermit and then prisoner of his successor Pope Boniface VIII and was later canonised. Celestine's decree, and that of Boniface concurring, ended any doubt among canonists about the possibility of a valid Papal resignation.[10] Pope Gregory XII (14061415) resigned in 1415 in order to end the Western Schism, which had reached the point where there were three claimants to the Papal throne: Roman Pope Gregory XII, Avignon Antipope Benedict XIII, and Pisan Antipope John XXIII. Before resigning he formally convened the already existing Council of Constance and authorized it to elect his successor. There were als several "Conditional" resignations: Before setting out for Paris to crown Napoleon in 1804, Pope Pius VII (18001823) signed a document of resignation to take effect if he were imprisoned in France.[3] It has been claimed that during World War II, Pius XII drew up a document with instructions that, if he were kidnapped by the Nazis, he was to be considered to have resigned his office, and that the College of Cardinals were to evacuate to neutral Portugal and elect a successor.[11] In February 1989 Pope John Paul II wrote a letter of resignation to the Dean of the College of Cardinals, which said that he would resign from the papacy in one of two cases: if he had an incurable disease that would prevent him from exercising the apostolic ministry; or in case of a "severe and prolonged impairment" that would have kept him from being the pope.
Honest folks don’t defend pedophiles.
Where is Cardinal Law? Where is Cardinal Mahony? Where is Cardinal Bertone?
None of them are in prison.
In fact, even as of last week the LA Diocese is still hiding the names of those who knew about abuse. In violation of a COURT ORDER.
Weren’t you just touting a legal argument earlier and praising the rule of law?
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles released 12,000 pages of internal files last Thursday on priests accused of sexually abusing children, saying that it was finally abiding by a settlement it signed with victims six years ago to make the painful history public.
But it now appears that the files the church released with much fanfare are incomplete and many are unaccounted for, according to the abuse victims lawyers. In addition, on many documents the names of church supervisors informed of abuse allegations were redacted by the archdiocese, in apparent violation of a judges order.
Evidently, the self-described “intellectual” posts of one Leftist bigoted troll on Free Republic have had such dynamite effect that they lead to the resignation of the Pope.
BS, the media and Democrats hate Christianity, they want everyone to think every priest is a pedophile!

Rome- Pope talks “platitudes” on abuse; SNAP responds
Posted by Barbara Dorris on June 18, 2012
SNAP - Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests
Again, the pope alludes only to pedophile priests, not corrupt bishops.
Again, he focuses on the harm to the church, not the innocent, wounded children.
Again, he speaks in vague platitudes, refusing to even accurately name the crisis.
Again, he refuses to even recommend, much less take, a single effective prevention step.
Pope Benedict claims ‘mystery’ surrounding why priests abuse. The pontiff’s wrong: there’s little mystery here. In 1887, Lord Acton explained it best: “Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
Priest have long had power, sometimes almost absolute power, over devout and defenseless kids. So they’ve abused that power and those kids.
And even now, bishops have nearly absolute power over their dioceses, staff and in some places, their flocks. So they abuse that power, and ignore, hide and enable heinous crimes against kids.
Until secular authorities or the pope take dramatic steps to limit bishops’ power and hold them personally responsible for crimes by their employees, little will change. Until effective “checks and balances” are set up that “rein in” the nearly boundless authority of bishops, little will change.

“Honest folks dont defend pedophiles.”
Honest folk do not call people pedophiles who are not. Honest people do not lie about others. You fail both tests.
Your bigotry is a stain on you and on the few here who post similar garbage. That your lies are even acceptable here is a stain on this site.
