A Melbourne priest claims the extra strain placed on Pope Benedict from dealing with widespread sexual abuse within the Catholic Church may have been a factor in his resignation.
Father Max Vodola said the elderly Pope's shock exit from the role may be because he is too physically and emotionally weak to deal with the decades-old problem.

Having said that I take the Pope at his word that he is resigning because he is ... old. The Pope was far removed from specific cases that bishops and cardinals would have handled .. or covered up. This author is just using this to take a cheap shot at the Catholic Church

Has the Catholic church even solved this problem? I seem to still be reading about incidents of priests abusing little boys. Are they still welcoming gay priests so long as they claim not to act on their homosexuality? Does the church not understand that its clergy have a special responsibility to be upstanding and moral. Having priests that are gay is a pretty terrible idea and it is difficult to understand how the church, from the Pope on down, can’t seem to figure this out.

I may not be a Catholic, but I recognize unsubstantiated rubbish when I read it. Who knows why he resigned? And at this late date, what difference does it make?

What an outright lie. Obviously you have not read the document. The secrecy called for was only about the testimony given during the internal church investigation. If the priest were found guilty they were subject to the harshest penalties of the church, including excommunication. Such penalties would by their nature be public. This is the exact same standard used for the testimony given to a criminal grand jury. Outside this testimony anyone would be free to go to the civil authorities and report the crime independently. The attempt to characterize this in any other way is the most base calumny.

They have. And the Catholic Church has taken many positive steps to address both the issue of ordaining queers and protecting our kids from abuse. More than, say the government schools. Study the issue and you will find no organization has done more than the Church in this area.

Pope Benedict IX, in the 1040s, resigned and attempted to re-acquire the papacy several times.
Pope Celestine V resigned after a shor time in the See, and Gregory XIII resigned as well.

Again, the pope alludes only to pedophile priests, not corrupt bishops.
Again, he focuses on the harm to the church, not the innocent, wounded children.
Again, he speaks in vague platitudes, refusing to even accurately name the crisis.
Again, he refuses to even recommend, much less take, a single effective prevention step.
Pope Benedict claims ‘mystery’ surrounding why priests abuse. The pontiff’s wrong: there’s little mystery here. In 1887, Lord Acton explained it best: “Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
Priest have long had power, sometimes almost absolute power, over devout and defenseless kids. So they’ve abused that power and those kids.
And even now, bishops have nearly absolute power over their dioceses, staff and in some places, their flocks. So they abuse that power, and ignore, hide and enable heinous crimes against kids.
Until secular authorities or the pope take dramatic steps to limit bishops’ power and hold them personally responsible for crimes by their employees, little will change. Until effective “checks and balances” are set up that “rein in” the nearly boundless authority of bishops, little will change.
