HIGHLAND, IL (KPLR)-Scary moments in Highland, IL Sunday morning after an alleged home invasion led to a shooting. It happened in the 2600 block of Eagle Way around 3:30am. Highland Police say a 33 year-old man was transported to a St. Louis hospital with multiple gunshot wounds after he allegedly forced his way into the apartment of two sisters, assaulting both of them.
The sisters are identified as Donna Carlyle, 47, and Debbie Keeney, 55.
Keeney had gone out for an overnight cigarette when the suspect forced his way in. She was struck. When the suspect began to choke Carlyle, Keeney got her gun and warned the man to get out of the apartment. When he did not stop his attack, she fired several shots at him. A small caliber derringer was recovered at the scene.

I think my five shot NAA 22 magnum is considered a derringer.
Who know? But it obviously was going to take more than seven rounds from a state-mandated regular magazine to take the guy down. Inside a home....I’m of the mind that a simple shotgun does the job better. Course, there’s a bigger mess to clean up later.

A shotgun does not lend itself to precision shooting. The guy had a hold of the sister, so they had to be close to each other. Shame the other sister wasn’t able to take time for a head shot. Given IL judges/liberal courts, the perp will be back on the streets as soon as his wounds heal.
NAA 22 Magnum?
Nice looking little revolver. And it actually does look like a derringer.
And a bonus, 22 Magnum is a pretty lethal round in the right hands. Certainly easy to conceal.

Oh, I know...a derringer was used, so it fit within the “You only need a derringer” template. Sure enough, some sheeple were running with it in the comments section.

A shotgun needs to be aimed to hit anything, just like any other firearm. They are quite precise inside of 10 yards or so. Patterns are quite small at household distances, even with a cylinder bore.
Some shotshells, such as Federals with the Flight Control wad, have very tight patterns out to surprising distances.
At household distances, with FCW shells, all of the buckshot will be in one hole.
18 feet, Rem870 cylinder bore, Federal FCW buck on the left, plain 00 buck on the right. You can see that with both, you must aim to hit a bad guy.

Also, you want all the pellets to hit the bad guy. You don’t want a wide pattern where pellets might miss.
