OTTAWA Patrick Brazeau has been put on a leave of absence, with the Senate saying the move was needed to protect the dignity of the upper chamber.
There was no debate on the motion Tuesday afternoon.
Brazeau, who surprised his peers by showing up in the first place, stood up and immediately walked out the front door of the chamber.
Now an independent after being kicked out the Conservative caucus last week, Brazeau had taken his new chair, in the back corner of the red chamber, close to the door. No one sat beside him, although most senators appeared to be present.
He retains his title and salary, but is severely limited in his ability to access Senate resources and take part in debates.
The 38-year old senator from Quebec was released on $1,000 bail Friday after being charged with assault and sexual assault. He was arrested Thursday and spent that night in a Gatineau jail.
The charges against him are summary offences, which are considered under the law less serious than indictable ones. This means he could not be automatically put on leave: under Senate rules, an automatic leave of absence is provided to senators charged with indictable offences.

Whew, when I saw “dignity” and “senate”, I immediately thought that those two words should not be in the same room when talking about our senate slime...but then saw that it was about Canada - which appears be about 10 levels of dignity above our bottom-dwelling senate-critters.
They’ve actually got standards.
We have Whore House Harry and (thankfully) very dead Ted.
“They only kicked him out because he was native; this would never happen to a white man.”
That will be the line peddled in the same media that portrayed him as a Harper-appointed thug yesterday.
Dignity? He could take the swimmers place in a waitress sandwich.
Sorry, he’s from Canada. .... So he should be sent to the US to take the swimmers place in a waitress sandwich!
