Coroner Concludes Woman’s 2 Gallon A Day Coca-Cola Habit “A Substantial Factor” In Her Death
Consumerist ^

When a New Zealand woman died in February 2010, her family swiftly pointed fingers at her 2.2 gallon a day Coke habit. Not the white powdery stuff, the drinkable, cola-y stuff. And although it’s taken three years, a coroner has found that the beverage was a major factor in her death. Coca-Cola had pointed out last year that too much water is bad for you as well, so it’s not surprising that the company disagrees with the ruling.

The 30-year-old mother of eight guzzled a whole lot of Coke for years before her death, and the coroner said a bunch of her health problems could be connected to the “extreme” amounts she ingested daily. He said that consumption likely played a role in the cardiac arrhythmia that killed her, reports the AFP.

“I find that when all the available evidence is considered, were it not for the consumption of very large quantities of Coke by [the woman], it is unlikely that she would have died when she died and how she died,” he found. He added that her Coke habit ”was a substantial factor that contributed to the development of the metabolic imbalances which gave rise to the arrhythmia.” Although her family knew something wasn’t right — she’d “go crazy if she ran out,” her mother-in-law said last year — they figured her habit wasn’t dangerous because Coke doesn’t display any health warnings.

As such, the coroner suggested ”that Coca-Cola give consideration to the inclusion of advice as to quantity of caffeine on labels (in) its products and… adding appropriate warnings related to the dangers of consuming excessive quantities of the products.”

I remember the “Cyclamates (sugar substitute in sodas) causes cancer!” hysteria some years back. It was “proven” when tested on rats.

Cooler heads pointed out that the rats in question were fed the equivalent of a human drinking a 50-gallon drums worth of soda each day. No matter, damage was done, cyclamates were recalled, and the world was saved.

Others pointed out that the rats used were the Fischer 344 type rats (???), which got cancer even when injected with water.

The coroner’s surmise is credible. Coke and other soft drinks have a high level of phosphorous, and excess phosphorous interferes with calcium uptake and metabolism and causes hypertension and dangerous imbalances in mineral levels.

If it were regular Coke, that looks about like 3 to 3-1/2 lbs of sugar a day. That and the caffeine is probably what killed her. Full disclosure, I have no medical or dietetic qualifications whatsoever. But I do have a fair amount of common sense.

I drink a lot of soda but DANG..

That's four two-liter bottles. Every day.

On a really, really hot day in July I might consume the equivalent of one two-liter bottle of Diet Mountain Dew. And I'm a guy.

“they figured her habit wasn’t dangerous because Coke doesn’t display any health warnings”
. . . and then they poured Coke over their computer keyboard to wash it, because the Coke bottle doesn’t display any warnings about that, either.

I just looked at a five-pound bag of sugar. It has no warning about consuming too much of it a day. Down the hatch! That’s all the medical advice I need!

2.2 gallons * (140 Calories / 12 ounce can) = 3285 Calories per day just from Coke along with 800 mg of caffeine. And that amount can be drunk from high capacity magazines

or single shots

Perhaps Baraq can implement Bloomie’s soft drink policy via Executive Order.

Hmmm, I’m going to do my own experiment. Since no ‘rats are allowed in my house, I’ll place my mouse in a glass of coke and see if it’s dead in the morning. Call me in 3 days for the result.

Assuming she went for a period of 8 hours each day of not consuming to allow for sleep (if she was able to do so on that much caffeine), she would have been consuming the equivalent of one 12 oz. can every 40 minutes from 6:00 am till 10:00 PM.

Wow!

The amount of potassium in Coke she consumed by drinking that much soda daily alone would cause health problems only...

Potassium leeches out calcium from your body...

Also the article states she was addicted to coke soda...not possible to be addicted physically except for the caffeine....

Even a caffeine addiction can easily be broken...just got to put up with a mild headache and a nasty disposition for a couple of days...
