Hospices Reveal Obamacare’s Impact
Heritage.org ^ | 2/12/13 | Bob Moffit and Alyene Senger

Two hospice care centers are struggling to make ends meet, and Obamacare’s cuts to Medicare are to blame.

Hospices—health care facilities for the terminally ill—along with other Medicare providers are facing Medicare pay cuts. Of the $716 billion in payment reductions, hospice care was hit by a $17 billion payment cut from 2013 to 2022.

Now, contrary to all of the misleading claims, this effect is already beginning.

San Diego Hospice recently laid off 260 workers, closed a 24-bed hospital, and has recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. San Diego Hospice’s financial condition is attributed mainly to reduced Medicare reimbursement, fewer patients, and a federal audit that hurt the center’s reputation.

Another provider, Delaware Hospice, had to lay off 52 workers, citing lower federal reimbursement as the cause. “The decision,” said CEO Susan Lloyd, “is a direct result of a consequential decline in census and the need to position the organization to meet additional changes and challenges that the hospice industry anticipates with health care reform.”

Like in Britain, I wonder how long it will be before they start giving hospitals bonuses for killing people who may or may not know they are to be killed, or want to be killed.

My family M.D. has raised the price of an office call again recently, it is now $200 for non medicare patients. He told me why he had to do it, you may guess the reason.

0bama wants all senior citizens dead. They are the ones who were taught how America is SUPPOSED TO BE. They are the ones who KNOW how America is SUPPOSED TO BE. What 0bama wants is the younger SOCIALIST-INDOCTRINATED crowd to rise and displace all the DEAD senior citizens. Dead senior citizens that took how America is SUPPOSED TO BE with them.

I’m thinking the same thing. I’m guessing the majority were part-time.

I don’t like it ,but, it is what the majority of those voted in both 2008 and 2012 said, via their votes, they wanted. Hopefully this time they will get what they voted for.

That younger generation agrees with him and wants the elderly eliminated. They’ll all have second thoughts when it’s their Nana or parents being killed. And they’ll sure have second thoughts when they become the elderly.

I always thought there was truth in the old saw about judging the quality of a society by the way it treats it’s weakest members.......and this is not a very positive indication.

Most hospice workers don't work in a hospital setting, they do home visits, order equipment and meds etc. They're intent is to keep terminally ill people comfortable and pain free.

The hospice may very well take care of patients in-home, as well.

Hospices—health care facilities for the terminally ill—along with other Medicare providers are facing Medicare pay cuts...If this weren't so infuriating, it would be laughable - I lived through the big fight to adopt Medicare - all you heard from the libs was that the new program was about assisting the old, who became sick and needed lots of expensive care toward the end of life - the program was to ease their suffering, make sure they had all the care they needed, and help them with the economic burden of that care - now suddenly, the elderly are to blame for all our healthcare problems - they suck up too much care and spend too much money - we're going to cut all their programs to save the rest of the system (after they paid into Medicare for as much as half a century) - liberals really are cretins......

Too little too late. Wonder if when we become angels we are allowed to say such things as “I told you so”?

IMO, those second thoughts will begin much sooner than their "parents being killed."

The second thoughts among youth and 30-somethings will begin when the costs and fees and penalties and overall consumer prices of everything become so overpowering as to strangle them in place. When they can't change jobs or can't move to new houses/towns or can't buy the products they desire (either because the products aren't available or because they're way too expensive) or can't take the vacations they've taken in past years or give their kids piano/sports/dance lessons, then they will know they've been lied to and had.

But by then it may be too late. Hopefully their Nanas and parents will still be alive to teach them about the REAL, free United States of America.

I hope and pray my analysis is completely wrong!

Every poster on this thread so far apparently believes that Medicare is an absolute right, which the taxpayers have an absolute duty to pay for.

Far cry from what started out as a "conservative forum".

It isn’t a coincidence, either, that the large majority of senior citizens are white.

You have to figure nurses aides, nurses, and supervisors, 3 shifts. Then there is the kitchen staff, social workers (grief, spiritual, etc), pain management, pharmacy, administration, custodial, Medicare compliance record keepers, reimbursement personnel (Medicare and insurance), medical coders, accounts payable and receivable ... it all adds up, but 260 does still seem high.

But . . . wait a minute. More hospices will be needed because Obamacare will be limiting treatment for the elderly.

I actually believe this has already started. My dad may have lung cancer. He's 84 and is very active. The docs have said they will not do any surgery at his age. He also has a knee problem--toally arthritic in his left knee. He had a right knee replacement more than 10 years ago. The docs say he's not a "good" candidate for a left knee replacement--so he's in pain most of the time.
