Your cold weather keeps out the riff-raff to a large extent plus you never had slavery. Canada has no 3rd world nation (Mexico) on its borders. You manage to be isolated (in good ways) same as Australia surrounded by water. Due to the benign United States you get to function as a island/continent nation same as Australia

As to why anyone would go to an inner city FOR ANYTHING

Downtown Detroit is nothing like the surrounding areas. It's just as vibrant with nightclubs, restaurants and theaters as probably your Houston is...maybe even more.

There's Cobo arena, Ford field, Comerica Park and on any given weekend downtown is packed with people, maybe a bit less in the winter.

For the downtown area, this was an isolated incident and there is very little crime due to the numbers of people.......

Outside of downtown it is a different world and I'd never venture thru it unless absolutely necessary but one doesn't have to in order to go downtown due the area being accessed by our expressways......
