There she is: Miss America pageant set to return to Atlantic City

There she is, Miss America — back in Atlantic City.

The Miss America pageant is returning to Atlantic City, the place it was created, after leaving for Las Vegas seven years ago.

Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and pageant officials will make the formal announcement at Boardwalk Hall Thursday, the governor’s office confirmed last night.

"It does involve the return of an old New Jersey tradition," said Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for Gov. Chris Christie.

The pageant was founded in 1921 to extend the Jersey Shore resort town’s summer season into September and remained there for the next 84 years. After network television dropped the show because of poor ratings, pageant organizers moved it, now held in January, to Las Vegas in 2006 — partly for financial reasons, partly for a glitzy rebranding effort.

"Certainly the traditionalists and sentimental among us feel the pageant belongs to New Jersey and it’s been on the road 10 years and it’s nice that it’s coming back," said Sen. Jim Whelan (D-Atlantic).

The pageant’s national organization initiated discussions with key people in the city, the governor’s office and the Atlantic City Alliance for a deal to produce and broadcast the show in its original venue, Whelan said.

In the past, the pageant has gotten financial incentives from the government to broadcast from Atlantic City. The governor’s office would not elaborate other than to confirm the pageant is returning.

I thought it was going to "stay in Vegas".

People lost interest when the pageant devolved into a politically correct tedious skit.

Atlantic City is in the heart of the NE. Megalopolis. How can they not be fabulously successful?

You almost have to TRY to fail in that position. I really don’t get it.

I think that just the mention of Miss America pageant in the title of the thread makes the thread subject to certain “rules”.

Yep, I thought all the bizarre twists and political games, and anti-Americanism and giving the bird to the middle-american public had destroyed the thing.
