Skip to comments.Time for Washington to dump offensive Redskins nickname

It's a new day with Washington's professional football team. The franchise finally has a quarterback, management that knows what it's doing and an owner who stays the hell out of the way. Mostly.
The optimism around the team hasn't been this high since Joe Gibbs won his first Super Bowl.
Everything is moving forward. The flowers are blooming, the future is bright and the team still has a racist nickname. Oh, wait.
As the franchise clearly takes a turn for the better and is now run by grownups, rejoining the big boys of the NFL, now would be the perfect time for the Washington Redskins to dump the ugly, stereotypical nickname that embarrasses them, their city and their league.
Instead, the team is doubling down on the nickname, publishing several remarkably tone-deaf pieces of propaganda on its website.
It doesn't seem to matter to Washington officials that the most recent poll increasingly shows mass hatred of the name by American Indians. Indian Country Today, the largest Native American magazine, found that 81 percent of respondents found such images disparaging to Native Americans and 75 percent said the imagery violated anti-discrimination laws.
But beyond the polls comes a simple point: What's the right thing to do?
We've become so complacent with this ugly, racial name that it has almost become comfortable, like old leather.
As someone who grew up as a Washington fan and is also part American Indian, I've found the nickname to always be a dumb and offensive one. More important, I've always been perplexed by why the team, especially recently, has stuck with the nickname.

And while we're at it, we need to get rid of other racist minority nicknames like the Chiefs, Indians, Braves, Browns and Reds ... offensive endangered animal mascot names like Lions, Tigers, Panthers, Eagles and Wolves ... environmental unfriendly names like Steelers, Brewers, Packers, Pistons and Oilers ... names that extol violence like Pirates, Rangers, Vikings, Raiders, Warriors and Buccaneers ... names that promote religion like Saints, Angels and Padres ... names offensive to persons with disabilities like Giants and Athletics, ... names that denote superiority like Kings, Royals and Cavaliers ... and we should replace the sexist mascot name Cowboys with the gender neutral name of Cow-persons!
It’s only offensive to white liberals wanting to media attention
They could use names like, blods, crips, thuggies. Or irs, doe, batf&m.
How about Washington Elite?
I never thought of this before, though I’m sure others have, but I have to think that if George Washington could communicate to us from beyond the grave, he would demand that his name be removed from the corrupt, over taxing, freedom hating capital of the country he helped found.
1) They're playing the Dallas Cowboys.
2) This bullcrap comes up in leftist Big Media.
Do Indians want to reclaim the name Red Skins?
How about the “Washington ForeSkins”! LOL!
So, what, name the team after the denizens of D.C.’s hoods? I think Darkskins might be even less acceptable! < /sarc >
Then we can fix most of the merchandise with a supplementary sticker
With RG-III at the helm, maybe they can make a few liberal heads explode by renaming them “The Constitutionalists”.
The Washington Drones?
The Washington Forked Tongues?
The Washington Taxes?
Quite frankly, though, as a person with high cheekbones, I find the racial reference offensive. /s
I agree 100%. The Washington Redskins names is horribly offensive to all freedom loving Americans. It stands for oppression, corruption and the theft of human and civil rights!
I demsnd that WASHINGTON immediately be removed from the team’s name!
Maryland Redskins is not only less offensive, but more geographically accurate.
I've got to wonder if the moron who penned this screed is part American Indian in the same way that Elizabeth Warren is. I can bet that they've never spend any real time on the Rez or talked to actual American Indians as I have.
Unless it is some libtard getting government money as a professional whiner, I can tell you from experience that not only does no real American Indian object to these mascot names, they root for the teams. Washington is overwhelmingly the favorite NFL team. Many of those who make good and leave the Rez, especially for a job in the Federal government, is referred to both affectionately and disdainfully (depend on who you talk to) as a Washington Redskin.
The idea that all Indians think alike is as idiotic as your average Libtard. Those who subsist on mostly government handouts (the Sioux in the Dakotas, Chippewa in Minnesota) pretty much vote the libtard line. Those who are mostly self-sufficient or even prosperous (Osage in Oklahoma, Utes in Utah) vote as conservatively as their Baptist and Mormon neighbors, respectively.
And, Mr. Freeman is another doughy white boy opining about someone’s else being offended.
My bet is that Mike doesn’t have high cheekbones.
Mike Freeman? This name, Freeman, must be changed. I’m offended...that’s all you need to know.
As for “Mike”...don’t get me started!
How about instead the despicable lying leftist scumbags at CBS be trashed and put out of business?
If you want to drop something offensive drop the WASHINGTON part.
LOL! I know far more actual American Indians who would agree with your proposal than would disagree.
Naw...that Name would be offensive to Jews...But I guess that is OK with the DC crowd.
Wait...it would also be offensive to muzzies! (They also practice circumcision!)
We absolutely CAN NOT have a name that is offensive to muzzies!
(I am part Indian and “Redskin” doesn’t offend me. After all, one names one’s team after something we ADMIRE, not something we despise. For example, you would never call your team the “Idiots” or the “Numbskulls”.)
Funny you should say that because that is exactly what my son-in-law calls them! Being an Eagles fan he can’t stand that my favorite team is the Skins since I spent more time stationed in DC and Norfolk than Philadelphia. Well, we’ll see what the Division champs will do next year with a hopefully healthy QB that will show just a “bit” more maturity by staying in the pocket.
I hate a$$holes that object to my teams name. Why don’t they condemn the moral bankrupsy of abortionists instead...or the Cleveland Browns. Jesse and Al should object to that one except not too many whites are on that team!
The Washington Corruptors!
They’re not really offended, it’s just one more way to crack the whip on whites. In the world of race-hustling and minority victim culture, whites exist only to foot the bill and take the blame for the failures of others.
It would be like the Homosexuals objecting to My Teams’ Name (Green Bay PACKERS)!
How about we get rid of ALL Indian names ?
How about the Washington Burgundy Epidermises.
As for the professional team names, if "Redskins" is offensive to American Indians, did anyone in the MSM ever think that "Vikings" could be offensive to people of Scandinavian ancestry and "Celtics" to Irish-Americans?
“Washington Human Football Units”
Redskins responded to this article written bt Mike Freeman:
Since their fan base extends into Northern Virginia as well, how about The Beltway Bandits. Or maybe the Beltway Bastards is even more descriptive of the main industry there.
The NCAA wanted to ban FSU’s mascot, but the leaders of the Seminole Tribe told them that they wanted FSU to keep it. So, albeit grudgingly, I have to give that school to the North, some credit.
haha, Washington Whiskey Drinkers?
Or in honor of Mayor Marion Berry, the Washington Crackheads.
Already taken - Vikings.
Time for CBS to start reporting the real news.
Funny that Muslims are silent when a boy named Barry Soetoro - who claims to be American-born, and claims to be a Christian, adopts the nickname of Barack Hussein Obama.
American blacks worship him, even though his mother was white, and his (supposed)father was Kenyan, with no legacy to the plight of former slaves.
Why wouldn't the Seminole tribe not want FSU to keep the name and the mascot? It gives them free publicity. Not very many people today would have Seminoles on their minds or even know what Seminoles were if not for the FSU teams using it.
And while we are at it, we need to rename CBS!
What could possibly be MORE offensive to “Native Americans”, “First Nations” or whatever the current popular euphemism is?
A company named after the one man who initiated ALL their problems!
Columbia Broadcasting System!
Columbia, from Columbus, i.e. Christopher Columbus. This man also had a given name meaning “Christ Bearer”. Horrors!
CBS, while you are at it, you really need to get rid of the middle word. “Broadcasting”? BROAD-casting?
Are you kidding? How have the feminist allowed you to get away with that for so long? Talk about insensitive!
And the fact that you changed the name from “Columbia Broadcasting System” to “CBS” in 1974 will NOT let you off the hook. After all, would you give the “Ku Klux Klan” a pass just because they now use “KKK”?
If you want to retain the acronym to save the trouble & expense of redoing all the signs & stationery, how about calling yourself the “Commie B*** S******s”?
However, to avoid offense and confusion with your original name, you must run a “crawl” or “ticker” at the bottom of all newscasts giving the full text of your new name, complete with the copyright and/or trademark symbols
Otherwise you could go with OSS, as in Obama’s Sycophant Society?
Washington Petticoats - rename the town Petticoat Junction. White House would be Shady Rest
I’m a Redskins’ fan but the name has to go. I think Washington Warriors would be a good name. Having that said, it should be up to Daniel Synder to change the name, and I think he’ll do it eventually because the name will eventually hurt his profits.
Clearly an individual of exceptional judgement and good taste.
Could then be shortened to
That’s what I’ve been calling ‘em.
How about the Washington Braves? Same logo.
