Obamacare Supporters Feel the Fear
American Interest ^ | 02/14/2013

Obamacare supporters are unleashing a massive public relations campaign, turning to political networks and sports teams to help them sell the new law to a skeptical public. For the Affordable Care Act to succeed in expanding the ranks of the insured, many of the 30 million currently uninsured need to purchase an insurance plan in the new exchanges the law sets up. But advocates worry that it could be difficult to convince people to sign up for coverage. The WSJ reports:

According to backers of the law, enrollment faces big obstacles as polls and focus groups suggest a majority of uninsured people aren’t aware of the new coverage options or the availability of subsidies toward the cost of health insurance premiums. Many respondents also say they have had bad experiences with finding health insurance or paying medical debts.

“This is a very skeptical audience,” said Rachel Klein of Enroll America, a nonprofit group set up by the founding members of Families USA, a group that campaigned for the law’s passage.

While Enroll America is relying on door-to-door grassroots political action to build support for enrollment, other states are using celebrity power to improve Obamacare’s brand. But the law faces bigger problems than bad branding and a lack of awareness.

It might seem odd that the law’s supporters should need to convince Americans to purchase a plan, given that those who don’t will be taxed. But the tax will be less expensive than the cost of coverage. The minimum tax per person will be $695 per year. Higher earning individuals will have to pay more: a couple who makes $100,000 per year, for example, will be taxed around $2,025. That may sound like a lot, but the CBO estimates that the annual premiums for the least-expensive plan offered under the new law would reach about $12,000 for a family and about $5,000 for an individual (all figures can be found here).

This means that for a lot of people paying the tax will be cheaper than buying insurance. And since the new law prevents insurance companies from denying you coverage or charging you more if you have a pre-existing condition, you can always buy a plan later if you develop an expensive medical condition.

Over time, more and more people are going to figure this out. Many healthy people (especially the young and the single) will just pay the tax, knowing they can get it later if they need to. In the meantime, everybody with expensive health care problems will flood into the system, driving up costs and premiums. Then even more healthy people will choose the tax over the increasingly expensive insurance premiums, in turn forcing premiums up even higher.

Keeping this dynamic from undermining the new health care system is going to be one of the biggest tests Obamacare will face. There may be ways around it. As of 2010 Massachusetts’s similar plan has successfully raised its insurance rate from about 90 percent up to 98.1 percent. But it will be a serious challenge. This glitzy “buy insurance now” marketing campaign is a sign that the government recognizes this vulnerability and fears it.

They need to fearing something! Any rational unselfish person would have to realize that we can’t keep exhorbitantly paying these people NOT to work!

Practically, there just isn’t enough money to do this unless you rob and rape the private retirement funds of the working citizens of this country. Even taxing the ‘rich’ at 100% of their taxable income is a drop in the bucket compared against the entitlement liabilities. And if you rape the private retirements funds, then you open up the rolls of entitlement freeloaders immeasurably. Effectively, you enslave the entire population of this country to some sort of government entitlement.

This is probably what Obama wants, but if he does this, he’ll get that civil war he’s been looking for, because the ‘good’ citizenry of this country are not going to ‘register’ their guns, give up their AR-15s, or voluntarily comply with any such restrictions. I’ll give mine away before I do that.

The system will also rely on voluntary reporting to the IRS of your current insurance status.

I imagine that there will be vast non-compliance with this requirement. I intend to claim my 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination.

The IRS will be in a precarious position, IMHO, when it has to be the vehicle for proving that people have insurance. Obamalamacare is going to teach people that just a little bit of mass voluntary non-compliance can cripple the IRS system.

The IRS should be very concerned that the lessons learned aren’t applied more generally.

Why buy it until you need it? The law forces insurers to take pre-existing conditions, so they killed their own business model. Morons.

"I formally request all those talented hackers out there devote full time to publishing names/addresses/phone numbers/car types and licenses of EVERY person who voted for and support Obamacare."

Be careful. We should also go after all of those who supported The Won(s) who nominated and voted for Traitor Roberts.

Taxed! How, as I have no money and haven’t had a job in ten years, thus haven’t filed a tax return in quite some time.

So how did I live? I was caregiver for my dying, elderly parents. I was their dependent.

At 61, I’m looking for employment but without any luck.

Tax me?!

All these articles miss the point that Obamacare was DESIGNED to hollow-out and crush the existing insurance industry so it would collapse and we’d all run to Washington begging them to pass single payer.

Yeah... if you don't get sick. If you are sick or injured, you still have to pay your hospital bills. Good luck doing that without insurance.

...unless you are a freeloader who doesn't pay his bills -- then feel free to do whatever you want on the taxpayer's dime.

You are right. Small family biz here, our Blue Cross goes
up 30% in March. Same coverage. Thought BHO said “no increases, not a dime”.

I'll give you one, former Wisconsin Democrat Senator Herb Kohl. And Herb Kohl's family department store chain just issued a policy limiting part-time employees to 29 hours per week so that the company would not have to pay for their health care and/or a fine.

Guess he thought it would only adversely impact OTHER people's businesses when he voted for it.

Remember tho that Obamacare is a temporary, interim measure that’s going to collapse by design. It’s the only way to back the country into adopting single payer.

So no, not morons. Pretty frikkin brilliant ( in terms of advancing a political/ideological agenda no matter the cost ) if you ask me.

All the law says is that you can’t be denied, not that you can’t be charged higher premiums.

Actually, it does say that people with preexisting conditions cannot be charged higher rates.

Did they pass a law for celebrities to pay into social security yet? Or Medicare?

Or for public employees to pay into social security and Medicare?

Can’t you just hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth when these clymers find out it isn’t free and that Justice Roberts’ tax doesn’t buy anything but compliance?

See my tagline.

I am not going to the doctor for much anymore. I don’t plan to either. I am opting out of the entire system. Reduce stress, exercise more, healthy eating. Prevention and holistic medicines and teas, and when it is my time, I am ready to go and meet the big guy upstairs.

DONE.

Not by a long shot. The demographics are past the tipping point here. Barring some sort of massive and messy scandal in their ranks the GOP will hold the House in 14 and 16, and has an ok shotvst picking up the Senate in 14 (but then losing it in 16). The White House is gone for at least a generation.

Look at Hispanics for instance, who voted for Obama based on healthcare, not immigration.
