SAN DIEGO Former San Diego Mayor Maureen OConnor took $2 million from a nonprofit foundation to feed a gambling addiction in which she lost more than $1 billion over an eight-year period, federal prosecutors said Thursday.
OConnor, 66, appeared in federal court and pleaded not guilty to a money laundering charge as part of a deferred prosecution. Under the arrangement with federal prosecutors, she has two years to repay the $2 million taken from the R.P. Foundation, a nonprofit set up by her late husband, Robert O. Peterson.
Peterson was the co-founder of the Jack-In-The-Box restaurant chain and later Southern California First National Bank Corp., which eventually became part of the Union Bank empire.
Prosecutors said OConnor, who is in poor physical health, had $1 billion in gambling winnings between 2000 and 2008, but she posted losses during the same period that were greater than that amount. They described her as destitute.

wow... it takes some skill to lose a BILLION dollars
Hmmm, no party affiliation mentioned.
Let the mob deal with her first and if she’s still alive, throw her in jail, confiscate all her assets and all of her family’s assets........Unbelievable
I remember when mayor Mo was caught in the middle of a drought with two water meters on her house. Don’t know what the fallout from that was. Probably nothing much.
Wow, they did mention it. *shocked*
Knew it wasn’t one of ours or it would have said Republican Mayor....
Buried in the article;
O’Connor was the Democratic leader of California’s second-largest city from 1986 to 1992. The two-term mayor was elected San Diego’s first female leader after eight years on the City Council. She was married to Robert O. Peterson, founder of the Jack-In-The-Box restaurant chain.
Surely that number can’t be right even for such a timeframe . . . won and lost a billion?!
Since her party affiliation is not listed, I presume she’s a Dem?
1 billion over 8 years is 125 million per year. Now how did she do that after stealing only 2 million?
I doubt casinos take personal checks in that amount.
I doubt she was playing the penny slots.
She probably never had much more than $2 million at any one time. Sounds like she was gambling daily. Over 8 years she won and lost around a billion. Pretty much could be the same money over and over and over.
This is my family.
She was Bob’s third wife and a huge mistake.
Shame on her.
You’re so wrong.
No it doesn’t. Democrats do it all the time............
Ask Jon Corzine DEMOCRAT....
Maybe she lost a billion of her own money and “only” stole two million
Of course, “It’s okay when THEY do it”. :p
lol. I hope I came across as sarcastic
Down in paragraph 9 (NINE): "OConnor, a DEMOCRAT who served two terms as mayor from 1986 to 1992, is accused of transferring $2 million from the foundation beginning in September 2008 and March 2009. She never repaid the money."
Of course, if she had been a Republican, it would be mentioned in the headline!
I am a long time resident of San Diego and I have always hated that phony. I remember when she was mayor she did everything she could to block the Indian tribes from building a casino in San Diego. She was holier than thou speaking against the evils of gambling. Her dirt bag brothers were involved with card rooms in San Diego.
She is a lesbian and did not have two coins to rub together until she married a rich old geezer with cancer.
Roger Hedgecock defeated her in the mayoral race back about 1984. The the San Diego Union Tribune was owned by Helen Copley (another lesbian who got rich by marrying her boss, the newspaper owner). The newspaper got the political hack district attorney to indict Hedgecock on phony campaign law viotations. He was convicted on one count and forced to resign. She steps in and becomes mayor. Hedgecock’s conviction was later overturned.
As mayor 0’Connor flew around the world visiting airports on “fact finding” tours and accomplished nothing. We still don’t have a decent airport, but she put on a Soviet Art Festival and a Faberge Egg show. She was a huge fan of Ted Kennedy. She makes Barbara Boxer look like a paragon of virtue.
I cannot wait to hear Rodger Hedgecock’s comments.
Ask Jon Corzine DEMOCRAT....
Haha . . . good one! I guess it really IS possible to gamble away a billion.
Response: A Democrat to boot!
Comment: By now it should be starting to dawn on a dumbhead here and there that Democratic politicians are vice addicts. Democrats possess every vice known to man whether single vices or combinations of multiple vices. (Usually the latter.)
Hell, Obama has done it millions of times. No big deal./sarc
I took your post as sarcasm on a different thread today and left it un-replied for the good of the thread. :)
That’s about $330,000/ day. Such dedication.
When I finally mentioned this phenomenon to my wife, she spluttered with rage "men still commit most of the crimes and most of the violent crimes!" I admitted as much, but the facts are women are far ahead of men in this particular area for the last thirty years. Now whenever one of these stories crops up in the news and the perp is a man she shouts "see, men steal money too!" with enormous satisfaction. But I chuckle to myself about one crime where women outpace men. I'd be interested to know how many of these female embezzlers, like O'Connor, are Democrats as well.
I used to live in SoCal...( Orange Co. Riverside Co. )
Hedgecock used to have a radio show....He still around?
Not a problem for Democrats. Both of them probably consider this a resume enhancement.
was it one of the times I said happy VD?
(which I totally stole from Martin Pearman on Facebook)
This article is piss-poor journalism
Are we to believe she stole $2 million, turned it into $1 BILLION, and then lost that entire amount? If not, where did that huge amount come from?
There is no explanation from their sensationalist headline.
I remember when that happened to Roger Hedgecock. I lived in San Diego county at the time. I had forgotten why I disliked her.
yes, steal is a better choice of word. We certainly aren’t hearing much about that Corzine mess which was quickly swept under the carpet.
How much has 0bama gambled away on Solyendra and the other "pie in the sky leftist schemes"? And I thought he had no skills. /s
Well let’s see. If she gets a minimum wage job and pays back $100 a week, it will take only 384 years to pay back the $2 million.
Grab a spatula, cow.
Wow, it takes a special kind of stupid to lose a billion while gambling.
A class clown wrote that on the chalkboard in high school many years ago. LOL
Robert Peterson did not have cancer (leukemia) when he married her, but he was 30 years older and she was his third wife, and one huge mistake. I’d call it his biggest mistake. We could never understand that marriage and never approved. You’re facts are correct regarding Roger Hedgecock and I was for Roger Hedgecock.
One day, I visited Bob in the old Marston House on 7th Avenue and had a stack of Hedgecock for Mayor signs in my VW Convertable to take home to Pacific Beach to place around my neighborhood. Maureen was there and she was pleased at all when she spotted those signs...lol.
The O’Conner’s were always trash. Her oldest brother, Denny was shot and killed at the old Campus Drive-In theater way back in the late 50’s or 60’s. The family lived on Dove Street in lower Mission Hills.
I don't think she was playing the quarter slots at that rate.
Roger has been on for probably more than 25 years. He is now nationally syndicated you can look him up from his flagship station here in San Diego 760 kfmb
Serves me right for not reading the article before commenting, I suppose.
It takes even more skill to be dumb enough not to see that much passing through the books.
There’s no way to balance the state budget when you can’t account for that much money.
Roger Hedgecock is still around. He has a daily radio talk show on KFMB AM San Diego. His show starts at 3:00 pm west coast time, about 20 minutes from now. Should be an interesting show today.
No! I like Jack & The Box shakes better than all the competitors available to me here in the Soviet of Washington.
However, I have a rule...no supportie dim dummies with my life’s energy! She isn’t still involved with J&TB?
It’s getting hard making high information choices, too damn many companies giving it up for the enemy.
A few months back there was a story about a small town treasurer who siphoned off tens of millions, a large part of the town budget over many years. She got away with it because no one else was paying attention I guess.
