OTTAWA -- Defence Minister Peter MacKay says a heavy-lift Canadian air force transport plane will continue to assist French forces in Mali for another month.
The commitment involving the C-17 Globemaster, which has been shuttling war material, vehicles and troops between France and the Malian capital of Bamako, was set to expire Friday.
MacKay confirmed the extension outside of the House of Commons on Thursday following question period.
The request for the additional flights came through military channels a few days ago, but MacKay says the Conservative government wanted to consider how it would impact Canadian operations before giving it the green light.
The extension caught Opposition members off guard.
NDP foreign affairs critic Paul Dewar says the government promised to consult the House about the mission, but beyond a set of Commons committee hearings, he says there has been almost no dialogue.
The RCAF might be cover or actual transport for the JTF-2 deployment in Mali.
Yet another opportunity for a French surrender. Never let a crisis go to waste.
the old french surrender joke is really getting old. they lost ww2 and vietnam. the us lost korea, vietnam, afghanastan so far.
so the french don’t have a/c that can transport AMC-10RC recon/tank destroyers. BFD
the us used the Norwegian heavy transport ship M/V Blue Marlin to transport USS Cole back from yemen because the us didn’t have the capibility. and we will us russian heavy lift because the us doesn’t have the capability or resources. guess the us surrendered too.
You missed a few hundred years of French defeats in your conveniently brief list. I leave you with a few quotes from American generals:
“I would rather have a German division in front of me than a French one behind me.” -— General George S. Patton
“Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without your accordion.” —Norman Schwartzkopf
Raise your right hand if you like the French.... Raise both hands if you are French.
granted 1870 was no shining moment either. and napoleon was finally defeated after the rest of europe spent 14 years losing to figure out how he did it and then did it to him. kinda like the soviets out blitzkrieging the germans in 43-45.
of course we have the war of 1812, a shining example of american military incompetence.
and yes french tanks have back up lights and 4 reverse gears and 1 forward in case they are attacked from the rear.
punch line “it was an ambush. there were 2 of them.”
all countries have moments of brilliant military incompetence. just saying.
i think we should start picking on andorra. how many battles has the andorran army won? none because it’s so small no invader even knows they passed through it.
