Common ground on guns?
Chicago Tribune ^ | 15 feb 2013

For decades, the gun debate in Illinois and across the nation has been a zero-sum game. Gun rights vs. gun control. When one side wins, the other side loses.

A recent court ruling and heightened concerns about violence in Chicago may finally persuade the two sides to work together here.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez are pressing for tougher sanctions against people who illegally carry weapons in public. The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has told Illinois it must create a process to allow qualified residents to carry concealed weapons legally. Here's an opportunity.

The appellate court in December gave the state 180 days to pass a concealed carry law, and the clock is ticking toward the deadline. House Speaker Michael Madigan is holding hearings on the issue this month.

State Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, has filed a bill that sets rules for granting permits for concealed carry. Gun owners would have to be at least 21 years old, pass a background check and take a firearms training course. Guns could not be brought into schools, taverns, casinos, most public buildings, sports stadiums and airports. Businesses could prohibit concealed weapons on their property.

Even with a court ordered shall issue carry law......... Chicago will never allow it.

Look at post-Heller DC..... pre-Heller it was impossible to obtain and own a firearm. Now it’s just nearly impossible.

There is no common ground with anti-gunners. Their constant and unwavering goal is "a society where only the epolice and military are armed." They cannot be bargained with for two reasons: First They cannot be trusted - ever. Example in the late '60s New Yorkers were told to register their long guns and that the registration lists would NEVER be used for confiscation. (you see where this is headed) In 1993 David Dinkins pushed through a confiscation law for all semiautos in NYC. And any who did NOT get rid of them one way or another were visited by the police, arrested and their guns stolen the police. Second, THEY HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER. We have rights. They want to deprive us of those rights. The so called "common ground" is simply depriving us of some rights now and the rest later.

Anti-gunners can only be dealt with two ways, abject surrender, and condign second amendment action. So far gun owners are too law abiding (unlike the anti-gunners) to do the second.

After getting their way for decades, the court rules in our favor.

So now they want to make a deal, where-in we give up most of what the court ruled.

Hey Demolsheviks, “Bite Me”.

If Chicago could pass more gun control laws they might shove the number of murders in the city to 1,000 per year.

The only common ground I have with the gun control movement is the one I’m standing on right now. Not one step back. Not one inch. I’m sick and tired of the attitude “what will you give up for me now?” The answer is “nothing”.

This is a false argument.

As an analogy, say Saudi Arabia demands that four US states must operate under Sharia law, or else America is “oppressing Muslims”. This columnist is, in effect, telling us to “compromise” by only putting one or two states under Sharia law.

No! They are ALL ours, not theirs to take or control.

Our civil rights *are* a zero sum game. We cannot compromise them, because they were given to us by “The Creator”, not issued to us as changeable man-made law by self-important politicians in Washington or the individual states.

So the only compromise is that we have full use of our rights, without any interference by government.

--I agree with you-Vermont,Arizona and Wyoming should be the standard for going armed.

--realistically, we are not going to get this , barring some miracle---
