Two Russian nuclear-armed bombers circled the western Pacific island of Guam this week in the latest sign of Moscows growing strategic assertiveness toward the United States.
The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local timehours before President Barack Obamas state of the union address.
Air Force Capt. Kim Bender, a spokeswoman for the Pacific Air Force in Hawaii, confirmed the incident to the Washington Free Beacon and said Air Force F-15 jets based on Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, scrambled and responded to the aircraft.
The Tu-95s were intercepted and left the area in a northbound direction. No further actions occurred, she said. Bender said no other details would be released for operational security reasons.
The bomber incident was considered highly unusual. Russian strategic bombers are not known to have conducted such operations in the past into the south Pacific from bomber bases in the Russian Far East, which is thousands of miles away and over water.

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Careful, they could tip the island over.
They would probably try to keep it balanced out so that it wouldn’t tip over like the other 57 states.
Gertz should take a look at his globe. Guam is not in the “South Pacific.” It is in the Western Pacific north of the equator.
Remember those “unexplained” contrails off the Southern California coast last year?
This just 2 days before we send a meteor over the Urals? There are no coincidences. ;^)
Shhhh, be vewy vewy quiet. We’a hunting Wussians.
Duh, Obama told the Russians that he would be more flexible after he was re-elected.
I say BS on the “nuclear armed”.. How could anyone know what was loaded. I doubt the Russians sent out the load manifest in case we were curious.
I wouldn’t get too worked up about it. This kind of thing has been routine Russian practice for decades. There was at least one reported incident during Bush’s 2nd term in 2007:
I thought that as well.
It was explained - it was a commercial airliner.
Now that Barry has “more flexibility” he probably told the russkies they could have Guam, or any of the 57 states of their choosing.
Yep. They know that zero is such a pathetic "leader" that we won't do anything about it.
And, we haven't!
Testing..testing.. testing...probing..probing...probing. The campaigner-in-chief just couldn’t be bothered, and the WORLD leaders know it.
They took a look at our portfolio and decided a desert island in the middle of the Pacific would give them the best return.
I second the motion!
All in favor, say “Aye”.
AYE! AYE! AYE! AYE! AYE! AYE! AYE! AYE! AYE! AYE! AYE! AYE!
The motion carries.
(Of course, the intercepting F-15s may have had Wonder Woman’s [I mean BHO’s] Gamma Ray Detector Pod slung under one wing...)
Paging Hank JOhnson, (Idiot) GA...pick up the RED phone...
My thoughts exactly. I would buy "Nuclear CAPABLE", which in military terms means "treat as if so armed."
Wondering how close they got? If they're capable of carrying cruise missiles, You'd think that they would be intercepted at that range and kept from getting within that range. 200 miles or so.
But that shows signs of inflexibility...
Since the Bear is the noisiest propeller driven aircraft in existence, our folks probably heard them and didn’t even have to use radar to find them.
The Russians have resumed Bear patrols under Putin after a 15 year hiatus.
So the Russians presented a little sideshow within the big show going on over there. ;-)
yes,it was explained by the govt.
And Zero his on vacation.
Wasn’t Guam the site of the next Pearl Harbor disaster, or was that San Diego?
