I have a sneaking suspicion that this “meteor” was part of a Russian military misadventure.

I think it is pretty clear from this video it is coming in too fast for a human launch, and in a wrong trajectory. Any failed launch would have the center of the earth as the center of a parabolic orbit, but this is not heading in that direction, it looks almost parallel to the ground at points. It seems like if the atmosphere was not there, it would have just skimmed by without hitting the Earth. I also think it heats up too fast for space debris.

I am not sure that I completely understand your comparison, but I have seen a meteorite in daylight and the path appeared to be parallel to the ground.

I'm about as ignorant of astrophysics as I can be, but I do remember reading stories about Soviet “satellites” in the 60’s that involved radio traffic from cosmonauts begging for help until their voices faded away. It would not surprise me if there were still some mummified Russkis in high orbit.
