Fireball Streaks Across Bay Area Sky (San Fran)
NBC Bay Area ^ | 2/15/13 | Anon

Posted on 02/15/2013 9:55:00 PM PST by ProtectOurFreedom

Jodi Hernandez reports on the cosmic close encounter that the earth is experiencing tonight and the real one Russia experienced this morning.

On a day that had a lot of people talking about meteorites and asteroids, a fireball of some sort was seen streaking across the Bay Area skies.

The fireball was seen around 7:45 p.m.

There are reports into the newsroom from people as far north as Fairfield and as far south as Gilroy. It was also seen in Sacramento, Newark, Walnut Creek, and St. Helena.

It was bluish in color and appeared to be heading straight to the ground, according to one viewer in Santa Clara.

"I saw that meteor/fireball over Solano County after spending the day reporting on asteroids and fireballs," said NBC Bay Area reporter Jodi Hernandez.

Candice Guruwaiya told us on Facebook she saw it in San Jose. "I was leaving Safeway on Branham and Snell when I saw it. It looked like it was headed for the Capital Auto Mall area. It was a bright green when it first appeared, then it went to a bright yellow. It was awesome!" Guruwaiya posted.

Gina Johnson also saw it in San Jose. She also posted on our Facebook page that she had just walked out of a Fresh and Easy in San Jose's Willow Glen neighborhood. "It looked just like the one I saw back in October except it was a little smaller. It was greenish in color just like the one on October. Everyone in the parking lot stopped and looked at it," Johnson posted

What you saw sounds more like an iridium flare. Were you looking SSE at about a 45 degree angle at around 7:15?

“This is some serious omen level stuff.”

When you see things like the Cleveland Browns winning the Super Bowl or Gloria Allred refusing to take on a stupid lawsuit, THEN we’re getting into serious omen level stuff!

This is not surprising given that the larger asteroid passed by at just 2 earth diameters distance. Must of have several small ones nearby. Remember the big train of blows to Jupiter with comet Shoemaker Levy.

I was getting a bit worried there right before Dec.12... The Browns won three in a row...

But that's as close to omen level as they got..

I remember a sci-fi novel where Earth was struck repeatedly by large meteorites of about this size or larger over and over for several days, because of a unique angle and direction the forces were strong enough in the novel that it stopped the earths rotation.

So all humanity had to flee to a narrow band of temperate weather, one side too hot the other too cold. Earth became like the moon, always a dark side and a bright side.

Quite possibly it was the Bay Area fireball you saw.

Comments from the end of the linked story:

My husband saw this in Redding...WOW!

Carol Harder · Puyallup, Washington
My daughter was outside her house in Toledo, Washington talking to me on her cell about the same time and , in the middle of a sentence, yelled OMG what..Oh I just saw a huge shooting star up towards the moon!

At typical meteor altitudes, the distance of a ground observer can be as much as 600-700 miles away, depending on how low in the sky you see it. http://www.amsmeteors.org/richardson/distance.html

This one, according to the sequence of reports was headed more-less south or SSW; and San Jose, Santa Cruz, & Monterey are almost exactly due south of Puyallup, at about 700-725 miles. Redding (mentioned in the above comments is also almost exactly on that trajectory.

Nearly fifty years ago there was a space rock which came in and iirc was sighted near Canada and U.S. line and then proceeded over N.Y. and down the east coast. The space rock eventually made it down the east coast and crashed into the ocean a few hundred miles from Florida. To the best of my knowledge nobody was injured from this space rock's flight. I recall seeing nighttime turn into a reddish bright blinding bright flash of light lasting four or five seconds. Thought, oh well, there goes the neighborhood along with everything else. What a rush of adrenaline! Have looked on-line a couple of times since that evening and have never found anything to reference that event.

I can’t imagine how modern day people would feel seeing this. Even if they understood space. Or more because of it.

The Russians had to be a little on the worried side..not to mention San Fran.

I saw it, I was returning from Rancho Cordova and on 580 headed west through Tracy. Descending trajectory, white to brilliant green headed west near parallel to freeway, diminished to nothing maybe about 15 degrees above horizon. It was kick ass :-)

You don’t have much to worry about; these (meaning the West Coast Fireball, not the Russian one) are fairly routine. However they are going to get much more media attention and are much more likely to be posted on FR from now on, which inevitably will lead to the impression that there are suddenly a lot more of them.

The American Meteor Society has a site where the public can post their reports (which can then be used to estimate the orbit of the meteor).

Last night’s event (32 reports):

http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireball_event/2013/326

However just in 2013 so far, there have been 7 other events with more reports just over the US alone:

http://www.amsmeteors.org/members/fireball/browse_events/?year=2013&state=&num_report=32

And there were 25 such events in 2012:

Suppose anyone could be hiding anything from us?

Didn't NASA know that the tiles on the shuttle were damaged but chose not to tell the astronauts? I'd have to imagine that if NASA or any other governmental agency knew of an impending catastrophic strike they'd withhold that info since it wouldn't prevent said impact and would only cause panic among a doomed populace anyway. That's assuming a strike in or near North America.

Don’t fret. The chances of your plane being hit by a meteor are probably about the same as being attacked by a shark in the Detroit River.

You don’t have much to worry about; these (meaning the West Coast Fireball, not the Russian one) are fairly routine. However they are going to get much more media attention and are much more likely to be posted on FR from now on, which inevitably will lead to the impression that there are suddenly a lot more of them.

Yep. Now every time someone sees a “shooting star” or “fireball” and captures it on video, uploads it to YouTube, it will be “BREAKING NEWS” on Fox, CNN, etc. and even here perhaps. People will say “Why all of a sudden are there all these meteors?” when these actually happen all the time, not the one in Russia per se, but even that type of event, while “rare” in over the course of a human lifetime, is not really all that rare on a cosmic scale.

And speaking of sharks, I am reminded of this:

Summer of the Shark

They certainly don't. But who said they do? I merely implied our government would keep us in the dark regarding a pending catastrophe. Other organizations may choose to release such information. NASCAR doesn't control world racing.

There was one in Texas a few years ago on a Sunday morning. If I had looked out the church windows, I might have seen it that day.

Most estimates were the original size was eight to ten feet across. Someone found the crater and a marble sized iron meteorite.

Yeah, right. Last night Foxnews gave the Russian meteor maybe 10 seconds, tops. CNN and MSNBC ignored it completely. As for the asteroid that passed so close, all three networks completely ignored it. They had “important” stuff to talk about, like how bad it smelled on that cruise ship. If you had watched those networks last night, you would never have known about the Russian meteor.

Really? Then you must not have been watching the same Fox News and CNN I was last night (I never watch MSNBC BTW, not even for a millisecond). Yea the Carnival cruise ship got a lot of coverage, more than it deserved IMO, but I saw several stories, a lot more than 10 seconds worth, that covered both the Russian meteor and the close passing of the meteor – video clips and some interviews with witnesses and some scientists. And they were still covering the story this morning.

Rick Moran at American Thinker posits that the government wouldn't be able to keep it a secret because there are so many excellent amateur astronomers with powerful telescopes as well as privately-financed professional astronomers who are tracking NEO orbits:

Would government tell us if we were about to be hit by an asteroid?

Kind of like this

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.
