SNAP Judgments: College Graduates Dependent On Food Stamps Are On the Rise
Texas Observer ^ | 12 February 2013 | Sarah Angle

Two thousand dollars a month. Thatís the income cap to qualify for food stamps in Texas. Two thousand dollars a month for a family of three.

My parents were teachers, no big paychecks or buyouts, but they were smart with their money and paid for everything with cash. I donít think they started using credit cards until I was an adult. They instilled their zero-debt policy in me as well, and the Discover card my mother put in my name when I graduated from high school still gets paid off every month.

My girlfriend who was a college graduate, used to take me to the food bank whether I wanted to go or not.....just to get free food. Also tried applying for food stamps when she was taking courses, the sad thing is she really believed she needed a more nutritious diet.

I once bought two bicycles for $800 from a fancy bike shop. I got the helmets too, at $30 each. That’s nearly $1,000 of sports gear collecting dust in the garage of our three-bedroom ranch-style house near Fort Worth. I have a master’s degree in journalism. My husband was working on his MBA at the University of Texas at Arlington before he lost his job and before we ran out of money

It is almost like this is satire of some ghoulish sort. If this is true, then little Miss Sarah and her effing leech husband need to recognize. Recognize they are leeching off people no more solvent than themselves who didn't pay Eight Hundred Dollars for a frigging bike or A THOUSAND DOLLARs for disused 'sports gear'.....YES! She needs to be ashamed of what she's doing - DAMNED ASHAMED! Miss Sarah, even though you don't recognize, there are still some people in this country that would rather die than do what you've been doing....eat canned dog food and sacked potatos. Use actual flour, 10lb bags of rice, powdered milk, eggs, bulk everything rather than to have the time you apparently have to use your 'journalist' education to moan about the 'stigma' having to go out in public and use that SNAP card. You deserve to be humiliated, both you and your effing lazy husband.

The fedgov is like that family in 2007 riding a wave of false prosperity based on maxxed out credit cards and helocs on a house with negative equity.

Instead of two leased luxury SUVs and a McMansion, it’s entitlements for everybody who wants them.

Why in the world would anyone buy organic cucumbers at $2.25 each? This woman should have learned to cook “from scratch,” as we did on the farm....and yes, we had time to plant, water and can the harvest of our vegetables. Perhaps this unemployed journalist should budget her time better. When there are no more EBT cards, what will her generation do?

As I understand the story ... the bicycle thing was years ago ... reminiscing of how careless she once WAS.

Are you operating differently today than ten years ago?

I am.

I was struck by her entitled attitude too.
Whey don’t they sell that fancy sports gear to pay for food, or better yet use the bikes to start up a bicycle delivery service for their neighbors

It burns me too that people who NEVER in a million years would have burned through money on friviouls stuff just because they had it are now paying for people who did.

Well, Sarah, perhaps you should have developed an actual marketable skill. Hmmmm? Your 'masters' is worthless. Try nursing, you'll never want for work.

Yes it was in the past. But it shows that they did not carefully save money for a rainy (out of work) day.

I now plenty of people like this who spent, spent, spent and never saved a dime. Lived the high life (which is their perogative, don’t get me wrong) but who now feel entitled that that lifestyle continue.

By your explanation about behaving differently over the span of a decade, you aren’t excusing her behavior, are you?

Have you considered that this behavior may well have driven and her husband to where they are now? And, it certainly does not excuse her and her husband from leeching off hard-working tax paying citizens.

Realistically, this country CANNOT survive this. It cannot survive half its people leeching off the other half. Incentive, innovation and entrepreneuralism will most assuredly diminish, and when the government realizes its real plan to take the retirement wealth of the workers and exchange it for a pittance chit on social security, it will all end ———BADLY....

All you need do is go up a few posts to see the pictures of what will happen when those EBT cards check out at the register with a big fat ERROR because there aren’t any funds.

Yeah! It ought to be cruel, nasty and overt....they should be ashamed. Pompous ill-educated assholes if you ask me.

Maybe I am old and foolish, and cling to a faith that the modern world has determined is irrelevant, but every day I thank God for all the blessings he has given me.

I’m am not well to do, but I am not wanting.
If tomorrow I cannot afford to buy a small roast and can only afford a couple of potatoes, then I will be ever thankful for those potatoes ... and if someone with a greater need than I needs a potato, they will get one.

God has never let me down.

Illustrative graphic.

When the food runs out, the crony, criminal politicians in Washington DC and other big lib cities will be spending all their resources and manpower trying to protect their own worthless hides from their useful idiot voters. The question they’ve never thought through is this: Will that manpower obey orders from a bunch of greedy slimeballs or head home to protect their own families?

It won’t be patriots chasing them from buildings and stealing their stuff.

It is strange that the more students that graduate, the less they know about life, science, art, biology, history, physics, the economy,,,etc..........

They believe the CRAP they are taught and consequently all they end up with is a head full of the same. They just don’t know how to survive in the real world, nor do they have the humility to take a job just to survive.

They mostly feel that they are owed a higher standard of living but reality is not in their vocabulary.

keep your weapons loaded and magazines full. You won’t have time to let the springs get weak, I fear.

Don't stop there.

Think of tactics to protect yourself and your family.

Anticipate hiding places and defensible positions with escape routes.

Make friends with like minded people and compare notes on tactics and survival methods.

Prepare for the fact that paper money will shortly be worthless.

Prepare for the fact that food will become scarce or even nonexistent.

Prepare for the fact that neighbors will sell you out in a heart beat if they are not like minded.

Prepare to disappear.

Always think and study techniques of self preservation.

No, I'm not excusing her behavior.

I read the article as a story without analyzing the author (journalism degree) nor how she got there.

The lady told a story which, for all we know, may be a lie.

I've been on food stamps for about 9mo maybe 15 years ago because we were in hard times and between jobs.

I've (we've) learned to garden and can our food, and I've always been a cheap prick (that's what my brother calls me, anyway .. ) when it comes to buying anything, so I don't relate to Campberll's soups or any name brand anything ... (except minimal salt Wheat Thins .. they are worth the extra money) .. I buy generic and house brand.

“What gives? Decades of research says that lack of education and poverty go hand in hand. The overwhelming majority of food stamp recipients still lack a college degree, but now there’s a surprising subgroup: 1 percent of food stamp recipients have a graduate degree, a number that’s tripled since 2007. “

Gotta love research. correlation without causation.

They think that it’s like the Wizard of Oz conferring a degree upon the scarecrow, that somehow a “degree” keeps you out of poverty, rather than correlating the actual effort, hardship, sustained delayed gratification and hard work required to get a degree that keeps you out of poverty.

So like the Wizard of Oz, universities handed out “degrees” to millions who did not actually earn anything useful.

College is, for the most part bulls***.

It is, for 85% of college “students”, a titanic waste of money and time.

The idea that it is a path to some sort of secure employment is idiotic.

I've long considered college as the place one learns to make contacts.

Fraternity's and sorority's are places you meet lifetime business contacts

College is where you get hustled into doing stupid things that stay with you for a long time and evil people use against you later in life

College is running away from home in a sanctioned enviornment

If you consider all of that an education ... well then, college IS a place of education.

SNAP Balance: $618.86. I’m rich.

I hope that isn’t for food. That is $124.00 short of my retirement budget (I don’t have a mortgage) for everything including food for just myself.

You’re right, I was in DC last October and saw the White House for the first time in my life.

Sadly, it looked like a swanky check cashing operation to me, you know the ones where a guy goes in and gives a post-dated check for $100.00, and they hand hime $60.00 cash, minus the fee for the two week loan.

Only we’re the ones paying the fee and the loan....

Thanks for that info.

The new Medicaid eligibility requirements under Obamacare also won’t take into about assets, just income. You an even have more than one house, lots of cars other things. As long as they are paid for so you don’t have to have the income to pay them off, you can be eligible for Medicaid if you make under a certain income.

Pretty good deal if you have lots of assets but low income.
