Homeowner Walked in on Burglars, Shot Suspects: Miami Police

Police are investigating after a man who walked in on a pair of thieves burglarizing his home shot the suspects in Miami Friday.

The shooting happened at the home in the 500 block of Northwest 52nd Street, Miami Police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes said.

According to Reyes, the homeowner shot both suspects in the legs.

The suspects, Preston Pierre, 18, and Samuel Levy, 26, were taken to Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Unit with non life-threatening injuries, police said. They both face a charge of burglary with an assault therein and one count of unoccupied burglary.

"Absolutely, something that we're seeing that was quite cleaver from that homeowner is what he did was shoot them in the legs to immobiliez them. So, clearly, these two men, who have an extensive past for home invastion robberies, are behind bars today simply because the homeowner chose for them to have life and just immobilize them," said Kenia Reyes, spokeswoman for Miami Police.

Investigators found they had burglarized the adjacent unoccupied home at 551 Northwest 52nd Street.

It wasn't known if they had attorneys.

A “controlled pair” to the center of the thoracic, followed if the controlled pair do not stop the attacker with a shot to the brain box...Essentially what you said...

It’s called a “mash”...The act of “mashing” the trigger, or making the gun fire instead of a “surprise” break, will send shots low...

Homeowner may have even had a good sight picture with proper sight alignment, but poor trigger control...Instead of finger on the trigger and slack taken up for a surpise trigger break, he mashed the trigger and the resulting jerk of the pistol muzzle sent his shots low...

No way to know, and just a guess, but a pretty safe one...Then again, he may have actually been aiming for the legs in an effort to wound and not “stop”...

Hope he has a good lawyer once it’s discovered these two “yutes” are members of their local choir, former Eagle Scouts, honor students, good to their grandmothers, rescue small kittens, and only entered the house because they thought they smelled smoke and were trying to rescue the residents, etc...

Or the DA is a Dem-o-rat...

No sympathy for the homeowner when they get out and come back to settle up. I doubt that they will stop with shooting the homeowner in the legs.

That is a very bad idea.

His gun. His house. His choice. You have to live for the rest of your life with the decisions you make. When its your turn make your own decision, but don't denigrate the one he made.

Sure, it was certainly his choice. I am saying that it’s bad guidance. I hope to never use deadly force, but if I ever do, I intend to shoot to ‘stop the threat’ and I intend to shoot for ‘center mass”.

Now for you... go ahead, try to just wing ‘em... I am fine with whatever happens to you and yours.

Leg shots are stupid but a head shot is almost a guarantee that the DA will investigate the shooting as a homicide and recommend it to a Grand Jury as one.

Bad idea. A head shot followed by a throat, eye, or temple shot is what is called for. These wounded burglars will rob again, but in the future they will be armed and likely to shoot first.
