In bleeding heart, do-gooder San Francisco, most fretting over the scheduled federal budget sequester has revolved around what the across-the-board cuts would mean for the poor.
Homeless advocates, for example, have warned that if Congress and President Obama don’t compromise by March 1, the city will lose more than $1 million in homeless assistance grants and $800,000 worth of housing vouchers for low-income AIDS patients.
But in emphasizing to reporters after last Tuesday’s Board of Supervisor’s meeting that the city’s fairly rosy budget projections for next year would be dramatically worse if sequestration happens, Mayor Ed Lee highlighted something else.
No more Blue Angels. And perhaps, gasp, no more Fleet Week.

They hate the military anyway. They don’t deserve fleet week.
The military is hated - until you need them.
Blue Angels shows may be on the chopping block regardless of what San Francisco has to say about it. Our navy is broke.

The Blue Angels just carried my Uncles coffin today to his resting place here in NY.
Without them, our procession to his resting place would NOT have been possible, without some major accidents, especially in Queens, NY.
God Bless them...they kept the procession going and no one got hurt.....well, almost one guy did. The one who tried to break through it, very rudely I might add.
His truck got a tad bit damaged by some ticked off family members, but all turned out well.

I agree, if states and regions keep electing people that HATE THE MILITARY, then why should the military waste any time there.
It has always ANGERED me that I could go to, at least, 4 FIRST-RATE shows when I lived in California (Edwards, Mirimar, El Toro, and Vandenberg) for NO CHARGE. But I move to Texas (Houston), and guess what - I have to PAY to watch them. In a state that LOVES the military and elects people that that vote that way.

We greatly expanded the military budget in order to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now we are out of Iraq, and we have greatly reduced our presence in Afghanistan. The cuts are less than the increases to fight those wars. Yet what will get cut is something that has been around for decades.
This will be the end of those units, by the time the navy has any money again, we will be using all pilotless aircraft, so they won't need a recruiting tool anymore.
If the Blue Angels in the future will be anything like the pitiful show we had in Milwaukee last summer it won’t be a loss.
Sad, as former USAF I used to love the air shows.

Amen. I’m sure other ports exists in military friendly states that would love to have Fleet Week.
Although the politicians may not be friendly, I can assure you that thousands of young (and not so young) women in and around San Francisco always made Fleet Week quite memorable for the Navy. Of course, when I attended they didn’t have to worry about running into any gay sailors.
Many of these jet teams make a lot of money to support their shows so having the the shows cancelled by the government is not saving as much as they say.
That was exactly on my mind when I made my comment about never appreciating the military until you need them. (great minds.....)

“As time goes on many...”
I won’t deny that things change over time. But I just prior to coming out to Texas, the air shows in California were practically all free, and seem almost every every month. In Houston, it’s once a year, and you pay.
Regardless, it’s just a minor gripe that comes to mind when I see these types of threats.
