Vultures Swarm N.C. Neighborhood

Thanks to a mild winter, swarms of turkey vultures have made themselves at home in Shelby, N.C., but town residents are wary of their neighbors. While the birds normally pass through the city while migrating south for the winter, the vultures have been sticking around this year, swarming lawns and making residents nervous. "We are just not getting cold enough to push them along," Kristen Duren, an intern with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, the state agriculture service, told ABC's Charlotte, N.C. affiliate WSOC-TV. "What used to be five to 10 birds is going up to 150 birds."

What do you call a bunch of vultures gathered together?

A Congress? No those are baboons.

A group of vultures may be a cast, committee, meal, vortex, venue and even wake.

Some sources state that a group of vultures circling in the air is called a kettle.

Turkey vultures are very sociable creatures, attentive parents and do a good job of cleaning up the stinky messes. I give ‘em an A+.

That’s mighty interesting that you saw a gathering like that. Who knew they did that. But then again, I have limited experience with vultures.

Could be more and more crows became aware of the free food and crowded out the other species. Nothing sinister IMHO.

"They react by puking"

Yep, surprised one feeding on roadkill on a tall-tree-lined road.
It tried to fly away, but was too full to get above the trees...
It 'lightened its load' several times in order to escape...

I was going thru Green Swamp on my way to Shallotte, theres a sharp bend where deer get hit a lot.
I was coming to it from one direction, a 18-wheeler was coming to it from the other...
We both got there @ the same time to see 6-7 vultures dining on deer in the 18-wheelers lane...

Boy Howdy did the feathers fly!

Had a friend catch a barn own in his car grill a couple months ago. He drives a basic lib tin can so he wasn’t going that fast and the owl wasn’t hurt.

The Dems could use some turkey buzzards to clean up after their follies as well.......

I’d be pretty concerned if I saw buzzards circling over my head with nothing else in sight..... :-)

“I once saw a flock of migrating turkey vultures completely eat a large dead dog in two days. It was impressive to me.”

I once saw red ants strip a lizard to a skeleton in 6 hours.

Glad they don’t fly.

You know why vultures’ legs and feet have a whitish tinge to them? Their feet are whitish because they poop on them. Vulture poop is white and runny and as it evaporates on the legs it cools them off.

Vultures Swarm N.C. Neighborhood<<<

Mayfield Place?

Used to have a plethora of species at the feeder. Now I find myself chasing crows. Omen?

ART:
You know how Suzette is about her bird feeder.
These crows start showing up out of nowhere.
She's all over my back to get rid of'em.
"The crows are too big for the bird feeder," she says.

CAROL:
I don't remember seeing crows around here before.

ART:
Oh, big bastards too.
That's why I got the gun. I'm gonna pop a few.

RAY:
Why didn't you go with Suzette to her mother's?

ART:
Hey, I'm eating here. Can you imagine me and the two of them alone for a week?
I'd rather chew broken glass.

What have you got against Turkey Vultures to saddle them with such awful names?
